Nothing wrong with the old Macbook (well, maybe a swollen battery and the inability to update the OS, built in apps), but it was time to get the latest OS/apps and more on board drive space. The new Macbook boots much faster and the processing power is as you can imagine, leaps and bounds better. I decided to go with a smaller screen size this time to aid in travel, since I have a 27 external monitor for use @ home. Of course, this buy necessitated the purchase of a couple of adapters and a docking hub since the new laptop only has USB-C ports(3) and no Thunderbolt ports. No big deal, minimal expense to use my legacy external peripherals. What I didn't expect was that some legacy software that I use that worked on the previous Macbooks Intel OS wasn't updated to teh Apple silicon OS. This included drivers for my Brother laser printer and some application software for scanner. After a quick search online, it appears that Brother will not be porting over any drivers for my printer to Apple silicon, but there may be a work around for the scanner, which I haven't gotten around to implementing yet.So, just be sure to factor in some extra time or money to get any older software to work on Apple silicon if you are coming from any older Intel based Macs.

But what I love about the Macbook is how I can move things between my ipad/iphone quickly and easily. And at first glance, that doesn't seem like it's worth the price tag. A small Apple Mini can achieve that at a fraction of the cost. But this is a portable powerhouse. I now can have my photos on my iphone readily available on my laptop, my emails readily populate on my macbook in an intuitive app and popup (let's face it, it's better than Windows). I can seemlessly migrate my things from one app to another. This means I can move all my data, I can create content, on the fly, anywhere, on the go. It's powerful enough, it's interconnecting all my gear. Some drawbacks as mentioned is , it's still not a realistic gaming powerhouse, but it's getting awfully close. The unified memory system took me a while to understand why and how I'm losing memory. And I can't expand this on my own if I wanted to. In a Windows laptop most manufacturers allow this and even show you how to do it., whether it's RAM or NVME hard drive space.Without rambling too much, the bottom line is everything's very smooth, everything's connected, suddenly using my ipad as a secondary monitor on the go is awesome, having all my photos/videos readily available to easily content-create is great. The experience is different, I recommend everyone switching over to Mac to spend 30-60 minutes watching videos, after that you won't even turn back.

[Rewarded Review] Incredible Upgrade, Apple - but very spendy!

This MacBook is amazing. My review is very clouded by the fact my last purchase was in 2017 - MacBook Air. That lasted me all this time (Nov 2024). But because I had such an old system, and couldn’t update it past iOS 12.76, I probably think this is maybe more incredible than the average person. The charge it holds is maybe the best thing about it, honestly. I can go multiple days without charging it. I love the Touch ID, I didn’t know it’d have that and it’s super convenient for not just unlocking it, but also passwords and filling things in. I got it largely to use Lightroom, and it’s great for that as advertised. I also like the mirroring option with my phone. With all this said, I wish it was more affordable. In today’s world, it’s almost required to have technology. I wish they would make these things more affordable. I needed a new laptop and mine just couldn’t do the things I needed anymore, both personal and professional use. So objectively, it just made sense to upgrade to the best available option to secure another long term use out of my laptop. Apple, please make things more accessible to the average person with average income. Overall, it’s worth the hype in my opinion for what I need - but I will be paying for it for a very, very long time.

If you are considering a MBA or a MBP there are three considerations: the form factor, processing power, and the cost. First the form factor. What you get with MBP is higher quality display and sound for starters. If you are someone who spends a lot of time on a laptop it's a nice difference. Even the extra room on the 14 screen size is nice, while the MBA it's super light especially the 13 and just a nice functional lap top. The 14 is still portable but if you are walking a lot or carrying other stuff nothing compares to the MBA 13.Second the processing power. Even for day to day stuff, the MBP Pro is super responsive and instantaneous. The M3 Pro also has 18GB of RAM so will have good longevity, and more performance with demanding professional creative programs.Third and most important is the cost. It's tricky to strike a balance between future proofing and not wasting money. I have a background in video editing but was perfectly happy with the 2020 MBA 13 M1 base model as my work changed to more interactive communication and scheduling. It cost about 1k and I traded it in for 40% of the value after 3 years. It just had 8GB of ram and I didn't bother checking the activity monitor. It just worked with tons of tabs open on multiple browsers, documents, and programs. So this time I spent $600 more than the base model Air, but this time wanted the 16GB of RAM and 512 SSD, so the price difference was negligible. The only time I miss my MBA 13 is if I'm walking or riding a bike to a few miles to a coffee shop, otherwise love the M3 Pro every time I use it. Even working in a vehicle with a hot spot the screen is so nice. The only annoying thing was the notch at the top of the screen. To make this disappear simply change the wall paper to a dark color at the top. I choose the earth one. It turns the entire top menu bar black so the notch disappears. Apple should have shipped it this way.

I am a brand new Mac user... and so far I am enjoying the experience. The Mac OS is so easy to use it probably only requires 1 brain cell to operate it. This is a refreshing experience and so far I have not had any compatibility issues with any of my existing hardware such as printers, docking stations and webcams. All my former PC accessories work fine with this Mac. Transitioning from PC to MAC was not as difficult as I anticipated. The only thing I don't like about this Mac is that the screen does not lay flat. This was kind of annoying since I tend to use a laptop tripod with an external keyboard when I travel. I may need to purchase another laptop riser so that I can see the screen at eye level when I am away from home. The laptop is obviously exceptionally ... MoreI am a brand new Mac user... and so far I am enjoying the experience. The Mac OS is so easy to use it probably only requires 1 brain cell to operate it. The only thing I am struggling with at the moment is learning the OS keyboard shortcuts. I found a list of them but memorizing them will take some time.I have noticed that this Mac manages the battery power exceptionally well. I can survive for 3 days without needing to charge. I use the laptop for home office, web browsing, e-mail and photo editing mostly.I anticipate that this laptop will last many years to come.

They are power efficient and, best of all, you can use them anywhere without worrying too much about the battery life.It used to be that I would have to worry about leaving the back of the laptop up for airflow, but with Apple Silicon MacBook Pros, that's no longer the case unless I am working on a very processor-intensive task. With the M1 and M2 generation of Max processors, the 14" MacBook Pro had some limitations compared to the 16" MacBook Pro, but the M3 Max has mostly caught up, and now allows the High Power Mode on the 14" Max ... MoreDue to the nature and variation in my work environment, I have generally preferred laptops. I was worried about Space Black ending up with too many fingerprints, but that hasn't been my experience after a few weeks of usage. It requires minimal cleaning, just like the Space Gray color. My main complaint with the MacBook Pros is their keyboard and how the finish rubs off the keys after regular usage. I wish Apple could figure something out about this because it makes the keyboard look bad after a while as if it was abused! If you are a macOS user, you can't go wrong with the latest 14" MacBook Pros.

[Rewarded Review] Power Hungry BEAST of a machine
26 March 2024

Bought this as the only true upgrade from my M1 Pro for Logic music production. Before settling on the Max, also tried two M3 Pro variations and one M2 Pro. Those were great, but just a sideways step in performance from the M1 Pro. Also, M3 Max is the only 14" stock config at BestBuy with 36gb ram.Pluses:+decent battery life for light tasks+exceptional performance+easy to clean the smudges (space black)+no fan noise during everyday tasks+great screen and speakersMinuses:-battery drains quickly when pushed, and noticeably worse than M3 Pro/M2 Pro overall-Will get warm, but not hot-theoretically better in some workflows but hard to notice the difference-unclear value for money-a smidge heavier than the other M3 14" prosOverall, this is a great machine, ... MoreBought this as the only true upgrade from my M1 Pro for Logic music production. I'm not convinced there is value since even this entry level max is hundreds of dollars above the others, but luckily BestBuy offered an awesome deal when stacking the rewards on top of it--making this purchase just a touch less painful.

[Rewarded Review] Spend the extra for M3max, otherwise get a M2Pro!
8 February 2024

I love this machine! I do mainly productivity stuff, (government reports, some coding, VM,). I got M3 Max to replace my 2023 M2Pro 16GB 512 SSD 14in. I love how I now have 10 performance cores at 4+ GHz plus 36 GB RAM!!!! I can definitely tell the difference in everything from browsing the web, working in the cloud, and my Adobe apps. The M3max is probably overkill for my use case, but I hate slow computers and this is gonna last me no less than 5 years. The screen is definately upgraded and is easier to view. (the difference 100nits makes). Unless you have the extra cash to burn, Id recommend sticking with M2Pros. A lot of Youtubers have shown that the M2Pros still hold their own compared to the M3Pros unless you are into graphics and modeling. At that rate, you ... MoreI love this machine! A lot of Youtubers have shown that the M2Pros still hold their own compared to the M3Pros unless you are into graphics and modeling. At that rate, you should go to the M3Max anyway. The only downside of this computer, is I can tell Apple reengineered the speakers and balanced the lows, mids and highs much more. I preferred the M2Pro's speakers because the highs were more pronounced, but I can live with it. That what external speakers are for anyway. Dont worry about storage. Make or grab yourself an external Thunderbolt 3/4 or USB 3.2 SSD drive. Its tons cheaper and will reduce the wear and tear on your macbook pro /max investment. I have had great luck with a WD SN570 1TB in any external enclosure. Many a youtuber will tell you that they work just fine.
