Best Bibs I've Used Yet

These bibs were fantastic for my snowboarding trip in Breckenridge. These bibs were extra flexible and didn't make me feel as constrained as other bibs have. They fit well and were very comfortable for riding from first chair to last. We ended up having a pretty wide range of temperatures from 40 to -10. The vents did a great job of keeping me cool on the warmer days, and I only had to add a single layer of thermal underwear (top and bottom) to be comfortable on the -10 days!

Purchased this to replace an Arcteryx storm jacket I used for 12 seasons skiing, really cannot beat their quality. I finally ripped the arm irreparably in the trees and looked for a while for a fairly priced replacement. The Core Shell Jacket's price cannot be beat for a gore-tex shell and has proven over the last month to be well built. I purchased a Small (I usually wear medium - 5'9" 165lb) as i didn't want the jacket to be overly roomy. The sleeves seemed a bit long the first time i put it on but once cinching the velcro wrist straps they turned out to be the perfect length to ensure a good seal against the snow with my gloves, the jacket otherwise fits perfectly even when pairing it with a puffy on a cold day. It provides a good block against the elements when skiing fast and hard but have not yet tested it in very wet conditions. Snow is dry here in Colorado. There is a strange design choice with the chest vent rather than pit zips. It works fine. On warmer days it seems to do fine bringing in air and cooling me down when skiing fast but I do not think I'd ever open it if it was snowing. they should have put a mesh pocket in this vent but it is just an opening. Hood goes over a helmet but a little tightly. Not sure if i'll get 12 years out of it but it is a third the cost of an Arcteryx with a similar build.

It is much smaller than the 686 jacket I used to buy. I feel that the clothes are too thin and the sleeves are short. And the zipper also becomes one-way. The pockets on the sleeves also didn't draw crowds. I don't understand why. There is a zipper on the chest that just opens the clothes.

No ventilation…bummer
3 February 2024

Shouldn’t make a Shell without armpit vents. Shells are meant for warmer conditions and to layer under, armpit vents are a must!!! Got to be able to let the heat out after a hard resort lap or skinning to get a sweet line. Add Armpit Vents to all snow jackets!!!!

Pretty good jacket
12 November 2023

Ended up returning this jacket due to sizing. Overall liked it. It's very lightweight, but not in a flimsy way. It looks great, has Gore-Tex waterproofing, and just "felt" good wearing - if that makes sense. My only problems came with the sizing - specifically the sleeves. I'm 6'1", 200 lbs, and pretty well built. I typically wear either a M or L in snow jackets depending on the fit/room in the shoulders. This was a touch too tight in the shoulders in the size M I ordered, but the sleeves were nowhere close to making it to my wrists - which means you can't use the wrist gaiter loops. Maybe a L would have been doable, but the other issue I found was that this model only has venting via a chest zipper. No underarm zips. I know Gore-Tex is supposed to also be "breathable", but if you've ever had to boot-pack on a pow day, you know only true airflow is going to keep you from being a drenched, sweaty mess. All in all, 686 makes a great product, and this jacket would probably do fine for someone who wants a quality shell and doesn't plan on exerting themselves (and who maybe doesn't have orangutan arms like me?)For anyone else, check out the 686 Gore-Tex "GT" instead for better ventilation, and maybe favor a larger size if you're not sure.

So close to great... so close...

Just picked up this jacket in a medium and the fit is perfect. I'm 5'10" and 170 pounds. The design of this jacket is really unique. It's one of the best looking shells I've seen this year. The 686 designers really knocked it out of the park with the patchwork look. It's super cool and really stands out. It's also extremely light weight and feels good to wear. The material feels really nice. I love the thumb holes in the sleeve liner and the glove attachment points. Unfortunately, 686 dropped the ball with the venting. There is only one vent and it's on the right side of the chest. And that vent has no mesh or anything, it's just a giant pass-through to the inside of the jacket (I'm guessing so you can reach the inside pocket or something without unzipping the ... MoreJust picked up this jacket in a medium and the fit is perfect. And that vent has no mesh or anything, it's just a giant pass-through to the inside of the jacket (I'm guessing so you can reach the inside pocket or something without unzipping the jacket?). In theory, it sounds good, but it's kind of silly in practice. It takes the same amount of time to just unzip the front of the jacket rather than the front vent. And if I need to vent the front of the jacket, I'll just unzip it a little bit. At this price point, one vent isn't enough for me. And I'd much rather have pit zips than a single chest vent. This jacket does not have pit zips at all and that's where I think vents are needed the most (at least for me!).As for pockets, they seem decent, but it only has one inside pocket, which is an open mesh pocket for goggles. It has no inside zipper pocket which I really prefer to a goggles pocket. But that's a minor beef and really no big deal. All in all, If this jacket just had pit zips and maybe an inside zipper pocket, it'd be the perfect jacket for me. But despite these shortcomings, it's still a great jacket. The hood looks good and the jacket is extremely stylish. So I'm only docking one star for the lack of pit zips and inside zipper pocket.

So far, so good! Living
2 January 2024

So far, so good! Living right outside the Middlesex Fells, the weather can be incredibly variable year round, and this jacket handles the rain and wind well. I've found this jacket has managed to keep me warm when it's cold out, but also not overheat me in the event the sun is out because of how light the jacket is. The vents also help a lot with that, too. Definitely recommend!

Solid basic gore tex jacket
19 December 2023

Love the fit. I got a medium, I’m 5’7 170lbs and it fits perfect, not too big not too small. Colors/style are on point. Clearly high quality materials from 686. Only disappointment is the lack of pockets on this jacket… every other 686 jacket has tons of random pockets that I put to use. This has a very very basic design

Things that make you go hmm…
8 November 2023

Awesome style, and you know 686 is made to last. It would be better if it had a two-way zipper and the venting is different with the no underarm vents and only the chest vent. I’m sure the front vent will be fine but I would consider underarm venting pretty much a standard feature of any jacket these days.

Usual high quality 686 style and fit
29 October 2023

Style and fit is usual 686 high quality. I realize this is the “entry level” GoreTex jacket. Interested to see how the fabric holds up to riding all season. The GT pants have a much higher quality fabric feel overall.
