A necessity for espresso bars

I never thought I’d be spending $200+ on a scale, but here we are. It’s worth the money if you’re serious about dialing in your espresso for the best shot possible. I love the auto tare and auto timer features, as well as the flow rate feature which displays grams of espresso over time. I have minor nitpicks about the design but nothing that would stop me from recommending this to anyone.

Just like what I expected from Whole Latte Love service, I got my weighing scale in no time. Of course from Acaia company who always deliver spectacular product in the world of coffee lovers. The precise dripping and timer combination is what I’m looking for in my perfect espresso every morning. Thank you for the product that I’ll know I’ll be using for a long time.

It's waterproof, which is great because this thing is going to get covered in espresso at some point. The auto timer and auto tare features are wonderfully convenient. The button navigation is sort of annoying: Long press to cycling between modes, double-tape to turn it off, etc... I sort of wish it had a dedicated Mode button. I figured it out eventually, but the first couple of days were annoying.

Good, precise scale. Wish I could disable four modes to simplify use
21 September 2020

I have had the Acaia Lunar (silver) for nearly three months. The Acaia Lunar is not inexpensive, but it is precise, attractive, easy to read, easy to clean, and water-resistant. I use this scale to dial in my timed grind after opening a new bag of espresso beans. Once I have the grind dialed in, I do not use the scale since it is just a bit of fuss.Operates OK, but I only really need two modes: "Weighing Only Mode" and "Auto-Tare Timer Starts with Flow Mode". I find the auto-tare modes fussy since they often auto-tare when you don't want them to. The auto-start sometimes starts when you do not want it to as well. I often have to manually re-tare, and manually reset the auto-start before brewing anyway. Lastly, having to cycle through several modes to get from ... MoreI have had the Acaia Lunar (silver) for nearly three months. Lastly, having to cycle through several modes to get from "Weighing Only Mode" to "Auto-Timer Starts with Flow Mode" is mildly annoying. It would be nice just to have six mode buttons so the user does not have to cycle. These minor things makes the use of this scale slightly tedious for daily use, but it works excellent otherwise, and is a great learning tool when dialing-in. Perhaps there is a way (through an app?) that allows you to disable modes that the user does not need? If not, that would be my sole request.

Great scale
8 January 2021

If you are serious about doing espresso and cappuccino it's the scale to have. It is somewhat expensive, but definitely worth the money. It's very accurate and easy to use. The size of the unit is very impressive it fits perfectly under the machine. Do yourself a favor, don't settle with a cheaper scale it's just throwing money away.

Great scale

Nice scale with fantastic screen and build quality. Response is super quick but can be too sensitive, sometimes a small movement could cause the weight to change slightly and then back to normal.

My new favorite kitchen appliance!
30 January 2023

I have never had a gram-accurate kitchen scale before, and now that I have one I can't imagine life without one. From a coffee workflow perspective it's perfection, visual indicator of flowrate, incredibly responsive read-out so I can end my espresso shots with exactly the yield I desire, and bluetooth connection to SE Profiler to help practice E61 flow profiling :)I find myself pulling it out for simple things like making a 2:1 soy:vinegar sauce for stir-fry, something I previously would eyeball. If I add sweetener to my drinks I can easily measure out what I previously would eyeball and now suddenly I can re-recreate things that used to be spontaneous in the kitchen.10/5 it's expensive AF and the cheaper versions will probably work fine but I'm happy having ... MoreI have never had a gram-accurate kitchen scale before, and now that I have one I can't imagine life without one. Sleek and accurate scale…
4 September 2023

No complaints at all about the accuracy of the scale, it is working perfectly for me in my set up. The only thing keeping it from a 5 star review for me is the touch interface, which is annoying to use when switching between modes frequently.

Too sensitive. Had to disable most modes
15 February 2021

Unfortunately, I can't agree with the other reviews. I found this scale too sensitive and frustrating to work with. I ended up disabling all but Mode 2 (Timer and Tare) and even that proved inadequate for my tastes. Nice craftsmanship, but was way too much money for something this finicky. Then again, my opinion appears to be the exception and not the norm.

WHY BUY A QUALITY ESPRESSO SCALE?

WHY BUY A QUALITY ESPRESSO SCALE?When it comes to kitchen scales, there are thousands to choose from. Prices range from around $20 to $700. There are some designed to support a variety of coffee brewing. Only a few are dedicated to espresso extraction. You may ask, how can a good scale improve the quality of espresso? To res-pond to that, we need to cover some of the early 21st century espresso technology improvements. This is to establish if investing in a smart scale to manage extraction quality is wise. Fidelity in measurement is not a new issue, see Figure 1.Fig. 1: What does QUALITY has to do with what is being MEASURED?Using current barista jargon, they know how to “dial-in” various components of espresso brewing work flow. For example: it is possible to dial-in coffee grind-size to optimize extraction, also it is possible to alter brew flavour profile by dialing-in the best extraction temperature. The 20th century assumption was that, with 9 bars pressure above the coffee puck, the pressure will be about the same through the portafilter. In fact, the popular lever machine, La Pavoni, provided subjective evidence negating the dogma, the pressure in that case is delivered manually with a lever with a real biological feedback res-ponse, the dogma often failed. Water under pressure follows imperfections on the puck’s surface, if there are any, indeed the water will follow hairline cracks and quickly develop channels. Water from the group-head rushes through the channels to funnel the water into the cups below, and most of the desired essen-ce of the extraction remains in the basket. An experienced barista, avoids all this, because good puck preparation prevents such malfunction. During the past two decades, experts learned a lot about how to prepare and stabilize pucks for home extraction, thanks to the availability of miniature, digital, wireless pressure and temperature sensors. Some additional tools that further help to identify defects associated with extraction are: naked portafilters and rugged, accurate, small footprint, digital Bluetooth connectable, scales, which fit between the portafilter and the drip tray leaving room for the cups, see Figure 2. In the future, home brewing will be the interaction between soft-ware and hardware to always get the best qua-lity espresso. Most likely, a smart scale will be built-in the drip tray of the espresso machine. The scaleFig. 2: The Acaia Lunar scale fits between the drip tray and the portafiltershould be precise (with calibration protocol), have some on-board computing capacity, have sensitivity to detect the first drop of the shot (0.01g) in the brew cup to trigger dynamic flow-rate measurement during extraction. When the scale is not in use, it can be stored discreetly, see Figure 3.Was the above technical description inspiring some interest? The Acaia’s menu offers 23 op-tions with only two buttons to control the unit, does that sounds to you more like an abusive sales pitch, rather than evidence of elegant and simple solution for operating a smart scale? In that case, forget about purchasing a sophisticated scale. Pease keep in mind; the above paragraph is an over simplified explanation. For example, if you were to order an unassembled bicycle, and you followed the instructions manual diligently and succeeded, yet you contacted the supplier to arrange sending it back because the assembled bike is unsafe in your opinion. But in fact, the problem was that you never learned how to ride a bike and riding skills were not covered in the manual. So, a scale dedicated to improve espresso ma-king with a multitude of options, at first, they solicit more questions than answers. However, if you are de-termined and do enjoy a good challenge, the well made scale can go a long way to guide you to improve shot quality. If you are choosing a scale to support your journey to elevate your espresso experience over time to higher plateaux, than the Acaia Lunar is the scale for the task.Fig. 3: A wall mounted tamper holder with an Acaia Lunar Scaleparked under the tamper
