I'd really love to give this an excellent review but there is one essential feature that they seriously need to address... the volume! This computer is listed as a gaming computer... so where's the sound output? There are many people and videos that have talked about this flaw with this particular model number. I'm pretty tech-savvy so when I go into every sound app, app-related instrument panel, control panel, driver setup, YouTube help videos, Reddit forums, and still can't hear the sound even when I have it turned all the way up, that is a problem for me.It's pretty sad that when I use this computer, I have to shut all of my windows and turn off my dryer in order to hear this computer kick out some sound.I looked for a long time for something I could afford ... MoreI'd really love to give this an excellent review but there is one essential feature that they seriously need to address... the volume! This computer is listed as a gaming computer... so where's the sound output? There are many people and videos that have talked about this flaw with this particular model number. I'm a digital content creator, so if I can't hear my own voice on the videos I create, that leaves me pretty disgruntled (especially for a "gaming" machine).By the time I opened this up and found this out, it was too late to return it. I would have opened it as soon as I bought it but life got in the way for a while.I did buy some external speakers which allow me to hear, but that defeats the purpose of having a laptop... portability just took a dive out the window because it's hard to put external speakers in my back pocket.

The Acer Nitro 5 Gaming Laptop is a sub $1000 gaming laptop that performs much better than expected and the 17.3", 144Hz, 3ms response time HD IPS screen is the centerpiece of the laptop in my opinion. The laptop as a whole is great for the price but the 1080P screen with fast screen response is what makes this low level gaming laptop worth your first and most likely only choice to try and buy.I have 6 gaming laptops in my home for my kids, myself and my wife. The Acer Nitro 5 is the cheapest by $600 to the next one and this laptop is by far my favorite screen for FPS games due to the 144Hz and 3ms response time. Yes, I have 2160P and 4K $3k laptops but they both max out at no more than 75Hz and I can never get more than 100 frames per second out of either, this laptop with the 3050 video card overclocked, I have seen 162 frames per second, I was mind blown I am able to runt he laptop at this level of graphics with a 3050.To keep on going about the 3050 RTX, it is a Laptop base video card, it can handle a lot actually and does not overheat the computer either in anyway when maxed out and overclocked. The fans can get loud but not overbearing at all, it does its job to stay cool so you can keep on gaming. The DDR6 3050 with 4mb of memory is fast for processing and it shows, I cant get over how much better it does than my $3200 ROG gaming 4K laptop. Yes, the ROG looks better, but, with the 3080, it does not give me the massive frames per second and just better gaming experience this 1/3 price laptop does for me. Now, if I turn the 4K off and swap everything to run the 3080 in 1080P, it will demolish this laptop but again, it is 3 times the cost. Now, for the rest of the laptop, the 512GB SSD and 8MB of DDR4 ram makes use of the 12 core Intel Core i5 processor and uses it to the fullest extent when gaming big games like COD and Battlefield but yet never slows down or overheats. The WiFi consists of IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax, Gigabit Ethernet is also ready to go and 5.2 Bluetooth connectivity is ready as well. The backlit keyboard is easy to use in a dark bedroom and not too bright so the letters are super easy to read making my placement easy to check and get back online once I get off center or just forget where I am at with my finger placement. The touchpad is very responsive as well, utilizing the pad as a left and right click mouse as well, and it is easy along with knowing what is actually the left and right click. The laptop also has multiple USB-A and a USB-C connection as well as HDMI for a second monitor or a projector. Windows 11 also works great on this computer, no issues whatsoever with the operating system and after a month of use, we have yet to have a crash or the laptop to not open a program, it is a very solid device.Pros:ScreenLong Battery LifeFast ChargingSSD Hard driveLots of USB portsFast WiFi 6Great keyboardCore i5 12 core processor3050 RTX GraphicsCons:Feel of outer case feel a little cheapnothing elseIf you are looking for a sub $1000 laptop, I would highly recommend looking at this one before any others, it is a great choice and if you or your school child wants a gaming laptop to do homework on as well, this is the one.

I picked this laptop up when it went on sale and it did not disappoint. I had initially purchased an HP Victus but had issues with the sound popping randomly, and the other Victus model I got had a 60hz screen… which is terrible for gaming. This laptop has a modern GPU in the 3050, a lightning fast gen 4 NVMe ssd, and a nice 12th gen i5 processor. It’s a bummer that it only comes with 8gb of ram, but pick up a 16gb stick and you’ll be good to go. Expandable up to 32gb of RAM, and offers an additional M2 slot for more storage. For example I was able to get around 75 fps playing Warzone 2.0, which isn’t too bad. This laptop does great as a workstation thanks to it’s good processor and super fast SSD.The only knock on this laptop is the battery life, which lasts around 2 hours. You’ll probably be tethered to your charger with this thing, so I would consider this a good alternative to a prebuilt PC, and you have the portability to move it around the house.I’m super impressed by this laptop, Acer hit a home run with the performance at this value.

This Acer Nitro 5 is the best value gaming laptop on the market today. Purchased for $729.99 in Oct 2022. Cheapest laptop with a RTX 3060 GPU by at least $100 when I bought it. One caveat, I upgraded the RAM with a Team Group Zeus 2x8 GB (16 total) 3200 kit $40. The AMD 5600H processor is awesome for gaming, but performs best with dual channel RAM (2 sticks). It’s best to have two sticks of the same memory, but if you are on a budget you can just add another 8GB stick of 3200 DDR4 SODIMM RAM Make sure the voltage is 1.2. The Ryzen processor will not take 1.35.I also added a 1 TB NVME drive from Team Group ($58) as well in the 2nd M.2 slot.I ran the built in benchmarks for Cyberpunk and and Shadow of the Tomb Raider both before and after the upgrade. Setting were 1080p and I used DLSS in both. The screen’s default refresh rate is 60 FPS, I changed it to 144 and turned on GSync. I used Nvidia’s GEForce Experience to change the graphical settings. When set to optimal (high) Cyberpunk ran at 47 avg FPS before changing the Ram and 67 after (that’s with DLSS and Ray Tracing!). Tomb Raider would not run the benchmark before RAM upgrade (would crash partway through) ran it at Optimized (highest settings) at 59 FPS.When settings were set to performance after RAM upgrade Cyberpunk went from 62 to 112 FPS and Tomb Raider from 63 to 122 FPS.The gameplay also looked a lot smoother and had less artifacts after the RAM upgrade. Now I will say the fans were Screaming loud when I ran these benchmarks. I was basically stress testing this system. The laptop could benefit from sitting on a cooling pad and headphones would help your ears. But this is to be expected running top AAA games on a laptop with settings turned all the way up.In any case, I was surprised that a laptop at this price point could crank out that level of performance.A few other things to note: the build quality feels solid. This is not a thin and light laptop, but a gaming laptop. It is chunky and I expected that. I like the backlit keyboard and trackpad seems to work just Fine. It is a plastic chassis, though, and is a fingerprint magnet. Doesn’t bother me, but might bother others.I don’t actually expect to do a lot of gaming on this, but it’s good to know I can, especially if I’m traveling.
The Acer Nitro 5 is an excellent option for anyone looking for gaming level specs in a laptop that doesn't break the bank. Here are some of the things I liked most...Pros:- Computing power on a budget! While you won’t be running graphic intensive games on their highest settings with this budget-friendly gaming laptop, it provides more than enough muscle for a very good gaming experience. An i5 processor is paired with an RTX 3050 GPU. Higher-end models are pairing the i7 with RTX 3060/70 but you would have to pay a LOT more for them.- A large and beautiful 17.3” HD display with a terrific 144Hz refresh rate. Games, movies, etc all look gorgeous.- The Nitrosense App (preinstalled) is simple to navigate and easy to figure out. Games, movies, etc all look gorgeous.- The Nitrosense App (preinstalled) is simple to navigate and easy to figure out. You can quickly toggle fan control from auto to max or set custom settings. And the Acer TrueHarmony feature lets you quickly select what you will be using your laptop for (shooters, movies, music, etc) and apply those optimal settings. Adjusting the keyboard backlighting is also hassle free and allows for many customizable options, including 4 zones that can be toggled separately.- When the power adapter is connected or disconnected, a tone sounds. This is a nice touch that I have never seen on any other laptop and can help eliminate those frustrating times when your battery dies because the power cord had come loose.- Remember when new PCs used to come with tons of bloatware? None to be found on the Nitro 5, which saves you a good 30 minutes of time you would have spent removing programs that came preinstalled that you will never use.My only downside for the Nitro 5 is how heavy it is. Expect to use 2 hands when moving all 6.6 pounds of this beast off your lap and on to your coffee table. Ideally, you can have a semi-permanent home for this laptop as it is not very portable due to its size. But this is a necessary trade-off for the beautiful 17.3" screen. This is a great laptop! While you can pay more for other models and get more power/speed, the Nitro 5 should not be overlooked considering the bargain price.

I have not seen this laptop slow down at all. I am impressed with how well it maintains its performance and keeps it chilled with dual fan cooling, air intakes on the top and bottom, along with quad exhaust port exhaust. The fans do generate a lot of noise when gaming and pushing the laptop to its limits, but that's what it's meant to do. Impressive machine to not slow down or cause any hiccups while in the middle of a battle during my PC gaming. The Intel Core i5 allows for various multitasking to occur and doesn't skip a beat in my opinion. Great laptop for PC gaming, but also video/photo editing, streaming, and browsing. A laptop that can be multipurpose for office worker and PC gamer lifestyles. With the NVIDIA GeForce I feel as if the graphics and picture quality are unphased by the action in various first person shooter games that I'm playing. The DTS:X Ultra speakers sound fantastic and help to provide accurate feedback during gaming with or without my headphones on. As for connecting to an internet connection, that's taken care of by the Killer Ethernet E2600 and Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX1650. This laptop is not the most ideal for portability purposes, as it weighs in at about 6.61 pounds. There are a decent number of ports with 1 HDMI port on the rear, 1 Thunderbolt 4 port on the rear, 3 USB-C ports, 1 Ethernet RJ-45 port, and a headset 3.5mm port. The RGB keyboard allows for 4 zones and you can dedicate various colors and lighting with the NitroSense Key. The WASD and arrow keys are also easily identifiable and feel natural at your fingertips. The full size keyboard and number pad are useful for my needs and productivity throughout my various work day tasks and gaming.Overall this computer is fast and doesn't bat an eye at what I'm throwing its way. The laptop continues to be very responsive and quick. Gaming on this has been a delight as the 17" screen is fast and doesn't lag whatsoever. Clarity and smooth scaling while gaming to multiple games has been fantastic. Acer Nitro 5 has impressed me immensely with its aesthetic beauty and internals. This is a laptop that I can use for work, school, gaming. It's a powerhouse laptop with powerful hardware which should last me for years.PRO:Large screen displayFast hardware and performanceAesthetic looksCON:Wished for a larger 16gb of RAM preinstalled
Pros: This is a very solid 7/10 for me.Great price. This machine will play No Man's Sky and at the same time livestream the gameplay to YouTube through OBS at high quality so, it's better than I was expecting.Funky lights on keyboard are controlled via Nitrosense button on numpad. Keyboard is better then the gaming laptops around this price which squash the keys together.Nitrosense app helps see what going on with cooling fans which seem to cope very well with gameplay. No Man's Sky, WWE 2K22, World of Warcraft, Grounded, all play on high/ultra settings and the RTX 3060 inside can run shading and ray tracing effects in Minecraft etc very well. Warcraft Dragonflight can be weird with FPS (unrelated to hardware) but I went from 37fps on a intel UHD card laptop to 225fps on this machine.Laptop speakers are obviously never the most amazing but sound is clear and volume is good. EQ controlled via Nitrosense. Some people complain about the noise from the fans. Well it's an RTX 3060 GPU in a laptop and it has 4 exhausts around the rim to cool it down so yeah it's not whisper quiet. At 2500rpm it's fairly quiet then at 3000rpm and up to 4500 it gets a little loud sure but it depends on the game and is pretty easy to ignore while playing and not mention, gaming headphones exist for a reason!I am very happy with this machine.Cons: Like, the only real physical issue I have is there's no SD card slot but usb adapters are dirt cheap so it's a non issue.Again loud fan noise is barely an issue while playing most games and I have not tweaked settings yet. Loudest blast I heard was during a system update where I assume it was testing them. I won't lie it sounded like a hair dryer but it didn't last long and it hasn't been that loud since.
For an affordable laptop that really packs a punch, look no further than the Acer Nitro 5. Whether it's for work or for play, the Nitro 5 stands out as your go-to machine to keep you productive and entertained.Aside from the red corners, the black shell isn't much to look at, but the overall build is nice and sturdy. It has a glossy finish, so unfortunately I already see lots of fingerprints gathering throughout the top lid. On the underside, four rubber grips give the machine a slight lift, to the benefit of the unit's dual fans. It's not the most portable of laptops, so be prepared to set up shop somewhere whenever you use it. Battery life is average, as gaming for long periods of time with optimal settings will really bleed it dry very quickly. It's not the most portable of laptops, so be prepared to set up shop somewhere whenever you use it. Battery life is average, as gaming for long periods of time with optimal settings will really bleed it dry very quickly. The keys have a soft, rubber feel to them, and some of the button positions need some familiarization, but overall it's a great layout that utilizes its space very well.Performance is top notch. With 16GB of RAM out of the box, the Nitro 5 can handle almost anything you throw at it. The processor itself isn't the most powerful, but multitasking between gaming, streaming, and working is seamless. Most games should run very smoothly with the GeForce RTX 3050 Ti, and on this full HD screen, they look bright and beautiful as well. One thing I think worth noting is the utilization of NitroSense on this machine, allowing you to monitor and adjust your CPU temperatures, fan speeds, and power, as well as letting you customize your keyboard lighting effects among other things. The Nitro 5 runs games well and reliably; it's really that simple.Overall, the Acer Nitro 5 stands out for its reliability, power, and great performance. Highly recommended for serious and casual gamers alike.

Laptop shopping nowadays comes down to making sure the system you are buying has the components and configuration that will best suit how the laptop will be used. For example, more cores in the CPU means more applications can run simultaneously (and switching between them is more seamless), more memory means components can talk to each other more efficiently (this also helps with gaming), and dedicated graphics (instead of integrated graphics) means all the calculation-intense graphics are handled by a dedicated processing unit (GPU) and dedicated RAM (instead of sharing with the system’s main CPU and RAM). Then there are all the other considerations like ports, screen size and resolution, battery life, weight, keyboard and track pad, etc. Clearly, a system for ... MoreLaptop shopping nowadays comes down to making sure the system you are buying has the components and configuration that will best suit how the laptop will be used. Then there are all the other considerations like ports, screen size and resolution, battery life, weight, keyboard and track pad, etc. Clearly, a system for gaming may not be good for general office computing and vice-versa. However, there is no exception that a good or great gaming laptop must have a dedicated GPU, and that GPU should also be equipped with a good amount of dedicated RAM for the GPU. Skimp too much on this one feature for a gaming system and you’re certain to be disappointed. So where does the Acer Nitro 5 stand? The Nitro 5 is marketed as a gaming laptop, but offers more performance than just gaming. A 12th gen Intel i5 CPU (12 cores and 3.1 GHz speed) powers the system. With this number of cores, a lot of applications can run well simultaneously. Next is the 16GB of onboard memory, which makes those processes work efficiently and helps boost frame rates for gaming. Finally, there is the dedicated Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Ti graphics card with 4GB of dedicated RAM, which delivers great performance for moderate gaming, ample performance for advanced gaming, and great performance for video editing. Couple this with the 512 GB SSD, (4) USB ports (1 of which is USB-C / Thunderbolt and 1 of which offers power-off charging), an HDMI out, a headphone jack, and an ethernet jack, and this is one value-packed laptop.Gaming performance, whether it’s a desktop or laptop, will differ based on the game and the system you’re playing it on. In order to enjoy some of the most stunning graphics with the highest frame rates and without stutter—well, you may need to sink some major bucks into the dedicated GPU. The Nitro 5 has a very impressive price / performance balanced GPU in the RTX 3050 Ti, so you can play just about every game out there, but perhaps not at the highest resolution and highest frame rates. However, I did not run across a game I couldn’t play at least at moderate resolution and very acceptable frame rates, without stutter (most of the games I’m playing are racing games). Some of the racing games have dynamic resolution scaling, which helps, too.Besides gaming, I also tried this laptop with general office computing and video editing / processing for the heck of it. Video editing / processing uses the GPU in many similar ways as gaming, but gaming does tax the GPU much more at higher graphics settings, especially in some of the newer games. For video processing, I evaluated two other laptops in comparison to the Nitro 5 for mp4 to mkv video conversion using Handbrake and a one-hour 1080p video. This comparison showcases how different laptop configurations affects performance and why choosing the right specs makes a big difference. Laptop 1 is a 10th gen i7 (4 cores) with 16GB memory and integrated graphics. This laptop averaged 33 frames per second (FPS) during the conversion and the process took nearly one hour. Laptop 2 is a Ryzen 5500U (6 cores) with 8GB memory and a dedicated Nvidia GeForce MX450 graphics card (a low-end dedicated GPU). This laptop averaged 70 FPS during the conversion and took about 25 minutes—a marked improvement over laptop 1. The Nitro 5 completed the task in 10 minutes at an average of 133 FPS. Wow, what a difference!General computing applications like Microsoft Office ran very smoothly, and even calculation-intense applications like Minitab and Tableau were very responsive. The fans are mostly whisper quiet with general computing, but do get a bit noisier when the GPU is working hard. Within the NitroSense app (which can be quickly launched with a dedicated hotkey on the keyboard), I took the fans up to the maximum 7500 RPM and it was quite loud, but also understood the fans will rarely run at this speed. The screen offers Full HD and a 144Hz refresh rate, which was appreciated while gaming. Nothing stinks more than having a great GPU paired with a really poor screen. While the screen is acceptably bright and crisp, it does not offer the exceptional brightness and crispness of an OLED or QLED screen. However, at this price point, you’re not going to get everything. The screen is fine.I did appreciate the customization of the keyboard lighting within NitroSense (many colors to choose from), but that customization only takes effect once Windows is fully up and running. The default red keyboard lighting (which is also part of the boot sequence) makes me feel like I’m piloting a Klingon Bird of Prey. Cool for looks, but a bit annoying on the eyes. There are four “zones” on the keyboard, and each can be their own color, if you like. The keyboard does have good feel, and for gamers, important keys have a distinct outline for easy and quick identification. The trackpad is an ample size and works well. The camera, although only 720p, is adequate for video conferencing. The audio is definitely nice for a laptop—crisp, rich, and with decent bass. It compliments well for gaming. The Nitro 5 is bulky and quite heavy, and the power supply is large. In addition, the laptop looks a bit retro with its larger screen bezel. The laptop ships with a SATA hard drive expansion cable and fasteners. This is likely because the stock 512GB SSD will not hold as many games as some might like (this is the biggest limiter to this laptop), and there is a free expansion bay for a SATA drive. The memory slots (2) can each hold up to 16GB, but the laptop comes with (2) 8GB bars, so the memory can be expanded but you’ll need to replace both memory bars. Lastly, with general computing, battery life was just about 4 hours. With graphics processing and moderate gaming, that life dropped to just over 2 hours, so portability is not the greatest. For general computing the laptop runs nice and cool, but when the GPU is being taxed for gaming and video processing, the laptop can get a bit hot to be sitting on your lap.Overall, I think the Nitro 5 offers a really good option for gamers on a budget. In addition, the laptop is more than decent as a general office use laptop. The large number of cores in the CPU, ample memory, and value-packed dedicated graphics card allow this flexibility. The biggest limitation is the hard drive size, but there is room for expansion (and the cables / fasteners are included).
