I did learn that you really do need a pretty clear shot of the open sky for best signal strength. But that is true no matter which device you use. I am very happy with the Bivy Stick. Even if money was no object, I still think I would buy the Bivy Stick over the Garmin inReach. I am not knocking the inReach! I just can't see where the inReach will give me that much more in reliability and features than the Bivy Stick. The bottom line is, practice with it and learn to use it.

They show the current temp and wind (which I can see with my eyes) and a plot of temps and cloudy or sunny by hour over 6 days with premium weather. Good for the beach I guess but without wind direction and wind speed, the weather report is useless for sailing. I know ACR recently acquired Bivy but you'd think they'd make it work smoothly before offering it. Hopefully they improve it. I'm on the hook for 3 more months and if not improved, I think I'll try Zoleo- at least they show wind direction and speed on their weather app.

I get the weather forecast at the start of every hike or trip I take just for that extra level of safety before I start hiking. I've gotten to a trailhead, hit get forecast and saw the weather was going to turn bad so went back home.I live in the Phoenix, AZ area where flash flooding, monsoons, sand storms, and rain storms can come out of nowhere in the wilderness. Having a better idea of the forecast of what might be coming is a game changer out here! The dedicated phone number for the device is also amazing. Means my family and friends can text me and I them from the same number, not through a website or app. It gives everyone that piece of mind. Also, the low monthly rate to keep the Bivy Stick active is worth the piece of mind as well. I pay for the basic plan (currently $17.99/month) that includes 20 credits each month. The credits I don't use roll over so you can bank them up for those longer trips where you might want to use the breadcrumb tracking option or just want to have a conversation with family and friends late at night by the campfire ;)On the technical side, the battery life on this thing is amazing. I can leave it on 24/7 on my camping trips and the battery will last the entire 3-4 day trip no issues at all (I'm not using the breadcrumb tracking). I believe it will last 10 days before it needs to be charged, and with the solar panel it came with, charging it and my phone on the trail is so easy!Bottom line, if you spend anytime outside hiking, camping, backpacking, you need to get this! Well worth every penny, service plans are so reasonably priced. Give yourself, your loved ones peace of mind while you're out enjoying nature!

Expensive, not reliable and the company is dodgy

I ended up injuring myself and missed out on true back country use with the Bivy this summer but I have tested it in the local area in the PNW with mediocre results. The lack required activation fee and subscription service is what attracted me to the Bivy but are now my biggest issues. You have to pay the very expensive and MANDATORY 4 months premium service for 29.99 a month in order to activate your new account. Then at the end you just get billed or have to remind yourself to switch. These plans are different from other brands though in that the 29.99 or 14.99 for the basic service don't actually guarantee you can use the service since you are paying for credits. My issue is that if you want to cancel if you wont be using it for a couple months, You lose any and all credits. What it does is force you to pay 120 dollars for the initial service, then threaten you with the loss of those credits in order to encourage you to keep the subscription or else lose something you have already paid for. The Canceling the service as well is confusing and requires an email to the company of which, has not replied.I understand that this may very well be legal and is probably common practice but it just feels wrong and dirty with me.

I could only get spotty signal at my camp but never when I was actually hunting which is when I was really needing it. Camp was anywhere from 3-6 miles from where I was hunting and couldn’t get signal to share my location or communicate. I didn’t expect to have great signal everywhere but at least enough to let people know where I was and/or to call in the reinforcements if I got something on the ground. Lastly, it does not make any kind of beep or noise when a message comes in… it only flashes a light, which is inaffective if in a pocket or otherwise out of view.Overall, I am happy with it. There does not seem to be a perfect device and service in this market yet, so compare the details and see what works for you.

Not waterproof!

This product takes a lot to figure out. It is not intuitive, and takes a lot of user effort to get it to send a message (holding it above your head for 5 min or more). It has been working fine for the past year. Monthly subscription is not ideal, but is fine for the piece of mind. The reason for 1 star - it states it is IPX7 waterproof, this is NOT the case. I had this and my pack submersed in about 6 inches of water for 10 min. My bivy lost ALL battery power after that, and wouldn't send a check in message, or stay on for longer than a couple seconds. I thought this was the reason for having a SOS device, if you got in a bad situation in the water, you could send messages? Had to cut the trip short because Bivy didn't have battery, and wouldn't charge. I am working ...Ā MoreThis product takes a lot to figure out. The device is reliable. The APP is not - read on.

The device is reliable. It is accurate in a way the Garmin Mini was not. This device acquires a signal fast, and often. Rarely did I have to wait more than seconds, or a couple of minutes at most. If needed, you can hit a "check-in" button, or the SOS feature, without the need of using your Bluetooth connected cell phone. So, the device is reliable. The caveat here is their APP. Their APP is unreliable,I have remedied this by doing an update about a week before a backcountry trip. I now connect the APP to the device and test it prior to leaving on the trip. Sometimes I am required to "log-in" again. This is very annoying when you're out in the BC without a cell connection because you cannot "log-in" without a cell connection. It has made the smart-phone to Bivy stick unusable for two-way communications!Recently, the App has been good and given me no trouble in the past few months. However, they have "broken" it before when it worked fine for months. When it does break, they often do a quick-app turn around to fix other updates. But is this anyway to develop software for a device that is relied upon to, perhaps, save your life?I do like their data plans and the ability to cancel service, and later reconnect without an additional fee or annual fee. That is what attracted me to this device. If my wife didn't want the ability to connect with me in the BC, I would dump all of these two-way devices, and stick with the tried-and-true and reliable ACR ResQLink PLB - which does not have any fees, does not have two-way comm., but is very reliable and superior for signal-strength (canyons and under tree canopy) and is used only for emergencies only. One last thing. Their customer service has gone from superior 5-star to almost non-existent 1-star in the 18 months I have had this device. Awful!

Unreliable product - messages not delievered!
21 April 2023

On a recent trip to Utah this device failed to deliver messages to my recipients. The App indicated that the messages were successfully sent. They were not.Their App development is amateurish. It has failed me in the backcountry causing me to not be able to communicate. This was 'fixed' when I decided to reboot the phone, clear the App's cache, and force it to stop. Now, I see the 'green' status that has a good connection to the satellite, but my pending-message indicator (blinking yellow) remains on. In other words, it isn't sending the message out even though there is a strong signal. The last straw was when it failed to deliver messages. REI - you should suspend selling this defective device until ACR gets their act together.

Works great and potentially more affordable

I've been very pleased with my Bivy Stick. It is the only communicator where unused credits roll over month to month. If your usage varies over the course of the year this could be some real savings. In months of light usage those unused credits just roll forward and accumulate. You do need to commit to at least the $35/mo plan for four months, but after that there are no fees for starting/stopping service. You can do an annual plan at $15/mo and 20 credits/mo that rollover if you want from there. SOS, Check-ins and Tracking all work even if you phone is dead. Unlimited Check-ins with map location are free (don't use a credit). It all just works for me. Small, light. I really like it. I would have given it 5 stars but the app can get a bit sluggish at times. When ...Ā MoreI've been very pleased with my Bivy Stick.
