Perfectly (& I do mean PERFECTLY) packaged, very rapid delivery & the Aesop's Fables book was better than perfect !! The book is beautifully, artistically bound & created. I have a few fabulous books from my childhood (1950s) that I think are magnificent BUT they don't compare to this Aesop's Fables masterpiece of a book. Thank You very, very much Armadillo. We bought this book for our first child, it's a beautiful keepsake, the book is really aesthetically appealing and looks great in the nursery. We have since purchased this book for friends for their children's birthdays and they've been just as loved.
Good classic to have in library. Wholesome literature for children, by which to teach good values.
Title page says: "This edition, its Introduction, and new materials copyright 2014 by Barnes & Noble, Inc." Where is the Introduction??? No preface about the print or edition, no introduction. And the 'new materials' (?) remain to be found or specified as yet! If you ignore these major publication flaws, the text (translation) is fair, though sometimes dated. The plates, drawings, illustrations--from various sources-- are the high point. And page design, gilding, leather cover, fancy endpapers are great. But all this adds to the frustration: where is the introduction?! :(
I loved these fables as a child, and this gold-edged edition is pretty packaging around some powerful lessons that guide people through life. Some stories are famous, like the Tortoise and the Hare, but many just as helpful fables are not so well known. It takes only a minute to read any of these fascinating stories and the moral at the end of each shows how the story applies to your life. The only thing preventing me from recommending this book to children or younger readers is the old-fashioned language that occasionally may confuse. But, that said, I did read Aesop's fables when I was young and obviously understood them enough to have always thought highly of them.
I bought this as a gift for my daughter and her fianc. They were both so happy when they opened it. Illustrations are nice, but the best part is the 400 fables. As I hunted for the right book I saw that most only had 10 or 20 fables at most. This is the one that will give them lots of reading time with very nice illustrations.
This is a really nice edition of Aesops fables. Buyers should be aware, however, that the translation uses an overly verbose upperclass, 19th century British vernacular that will be too tough for most kids. Plan to use it to build exposure to advanced diction in small bites.
i received this book exceptionally fast for the current situation we are in.- thankyouplease tell me - the cover is on back to front - is that Aesops little touch or is it a mistakewe have been pondering this since we received the bookthe grand kids just love it!!!!!
