This is a very good 4000 series gaming laptop! The screen (at least on my unit) has zero backlight bleed and is sufficiently bright with great color gamut! The RTX 4080 GPU is extraordinary and a significant step up even from a 3000 series GPU. The keyboard is excellent to type on and Alienware/Dell have finally illuminated the secondary functions which is something they have neglected to do for the last couple of years in their Alienware lines. It's nice to be able to see which function key does what in a dim or dark environment. The cooling is very good and while the machine likes to go crazy on the CPU by ramping it up to well over 100 watts when you first launch a game it usually calms down after a couple of minutes. The GPU always stays cool, but the CPU fluctuates a lot in power and temperature depending on what's going on in the game. I know there's reviews out there about the 55 watt power limit that was put in the BIOS, but an update this past week seems to have reset that. You can of course go back in and set whatever limits you want as this M16 comes with a very customizable BIOS!On the negative side of things, I personally don't love the sound of the fans as they tend to be a little high pitched with a bit of a whistle at times. The other criticisms I have are that the trackpad is a little small by today's standards and not the smoothest. One more issue is that the laptop doesn't support USB-C charging for those times when you don't want to carry the literal brick-sized power adapter. The M16 is highly upgradable with space for three more SSDs (two are the shorty size) and the ability to swap out the RAM as well.Overall, this is a very good gaming and generally purpose machine. Windows Hello face login works super well, the keyboard is a joy to type on, the battery life is mediocre (but that comes with this class of laptop) and the build quality is excellent! If you want high performance for a reasonable price from a usually highly expensive brand this is it!

Alienware has a great reputation for making really solid gaming desktops and laptops. I would like to address my main concern with this laptop and that was the brightness of the screen. I also have another laptop with 500 nits brightness that I used to compare this to. It is 300+ nits and is plenty bright. I was surprised how I needed to turn it down a few notches when gaming due to it being too bright so no worries about the screen brightness. The picture was very crisp and clear, so watching movies and gaming was a treat. l also ran a backlight bleed test and almost 0 backlight bleed. I would also like to give kudos to Alienware on the RGB and keyboard as they are very good. Typing on this laptop is really good and feels nice to the touch with good travel. No need to worry about the power when gaming on this laptop. Yes, the fans can get loud under load when gaming but that is to be expected. Yes, the battery life is not the best either under load. The 4080 with 12GB of VRAM is great. I did run a benchmark test on MW2 and the AVG was 204 FPS (please see picture). All I needed to do was run the normal updates and the laptop did the rest. After a few weeks of non-stop gaming etc. I can say I do recommend this laptop as I have had 0 issues with it. I hope this is helpful for anyone looking at this laptop.

The CPU and GPU are very fast and do pretty much anything you throw at them. One big downside is the 16gb ddr5 memory. You pretty much need to upgrade immediately to take advantage of the processing power in the machine. The other drawback is that even though it tells you that there are four m.2 slots, you can only put one additional ssd in unless you are willing to clone the included drive and then remove it so that you can have two drives larger than a 1tb drive. This takes time which I don't have much of and it costs more money to ugrade as well as creating more waste to have a drive you can't use in the machine. To make an improvement they should have used the smaller m.2 slots as your boot drive on 512gb and a second 512gb in the other smaller slot for 1tb ... MoreThe CPU and GPU are very fast and do pretty much anything you throw at them. Once you take the time to fix those issues you have an amazing computer for gaming. This could have easily been 5 stars if it weren't for those two issues.

Amazing Laptop, but a few complaints.
31 May 2023

First, this laptop is amazing. Its cool, quiet and powerful. I’m not talking about laptop power. The i9-13900HX benches at a 30,000 on Cinebench multicore. That is 2000 more than what I get for my liquid cooled non overclocked i7-13700K on my custom desktop. The GPU is insane. Its not as good as a desktop grade RTX 4090 that I have, but its respectably as fast as a 3080 or 3080 Ti desktop with DLSS 3 as a bonus. The laptop is built like a tank, its solid, sturdy and completely covered with metal. The keyboard was a treat to type on. However, the screen could be a bit brighter or sharper. Its a great IPS panel, but I have bern spoilt with my OLED TV. As for another drawback, there is an audible electrical sound similar to coil whine. It is faint and not audible from a distance, but its there. I tested the 4070 version of this same laptop and even an M17 from last year, all three produced the same sound, so it surely isn’t a defect with my model. It could be a non-issue if you don’t pay attention to it.

Great Price for Specs and Features

Excellent specs and build quality for the price. Body is mostly made of aluminum and has a soft rubber-like material on the deck with the keyboard and trackpad. Unit has 4 cooling fans and a vapor chamber, 4 m.2 NVMe storage bays, upgradeable memory to 64GB, RTX 4080 with 12GB VRAM, and 24-core Intel i9 CPU. From a design standpoint it is a very beautiful machine. Big, but beautiful. Also the display is a QHD+ 240Hz LCD display with an advertised *300 nits* LED backlight, yet the display still gets plenty bright and is very colorful and not oversaturated or dull. In a nutshell, a fantastic performer at the expense of awful Dell/Alienware software.Performance : Going from a 10750H/RTX 3070 laptop to this 13900HX/RTX 4080 laptop felt pretty substantial. The fact this laptop can easily hit it's high power load without stutter is remarkable. The temps are pretty decent considering the specs of the system. I'm a little disappointed with how heavy the system is for a 16 incher, my old 17 inch was much lighter but it's a sacrifice you must make to keep high level performance.Display : The screen is beautiful! No Regret

This is a really solid laptop (Literally). Build quality is excellent, no flexing when you pick it up from a corner to move it off your lap (for instance). The 4080 was a good choice because Im happy with games maxed out and a solid 60FPS. With DLSS 3 (Frame Generation) it pushes everything (Cyberpunk etc…) beyond that without reaching 80c on the gpu at 175w. (Time Spy: Total: 18000 +. Graphics: 18000+ CPU unlocked 16000+). PROBLEM; The CPU is locked down to 55w TDP which is very weak, but you can one click auto overclock it in the BIOS. Or download Intel’s own XTU OC software. I just used the BIOS. Continually press F2 on boot up and that’ll get you in. I docked Dell a star because their software: Alien Command Center, is only ok, it doesn’t include anything for ... MoreThis is a really solid laptop (Literally). PROBLEM; The CPU is locked down to 55w TDP which is very weak, but you can one click auto overclock it in the BIOS. Or download Intel’s own XTU OC software. I just used the BIOS. Continually press F2 on boot up and that’ll get you in. I docked Dell a star because their software: Alien Command Center, is only ok, it doesn’t include anything for cpu tuning. The whole suite is janky and has been the last 2 years but it does do some stuff well. The fans get loud but I’ve always liked how Aloenware’s sounds, its like an air stream instead of just blowers. You will have to turn up the volume when AAA gaming. Speaking of volume, the SOUND is excellent, the spatial audio from Atmos works really well. And the volume will climb higher than the loudest of the fan modes and stay concise and tight (Sorry to anyone in the room haha). Some decent noise cancellation ear buds or over ear headphones negate the issue all together. The screen is nice. I only have OLED tv’s in my house to state my bias, but it is nice and you do get some decent blacks out of it with no ghosting, but would really like to get my next AWare with an OLED screen.

Overall, Very Good

I purchased this to replace my 17” Dell XPS. For a gaming PC, it performed very well - nothing to complain about there. I really liked the styling and build quality as well - the keyboard had a great feel and the laptop overall just felt sturdy and substantial. However, it had just one flaw that - for me at least - was a deal-breaker: very limited portability. I don’t mean the laptop itself - it’s big and heavy for sure, but so are most gaming laptops. What I didn’t like was the enormous power brick that, by itself, weighs 2 1/2 pounds and the fact that, for a gaming laptop with limited battery life, Alienware didn’t include the ability to charge the laptop over the USB-C port, which a lot of gaming laptops feature. So you are basically stuck with the giant power brick if you want to leave the house. Evidently, you get both those features (slim power brick and UCB-C charging) with Alienware’s more-expensive X-series, so just keep that in mind if that kind of stuff matters to you.
