A great riding pant

After reading some of the reviews on the Andes v2 Drystar pant about sizing, I was second guessing whether the Medium size would be appropriate for me. I’m 6’1”, 165 lbs with a 33” waist, 39.5” at the hips, 22.5” around the thigh and a 32” inseam. All of those measurements placed me solidly within the Medium sizing bracket, except my height, which fell in the XL category. With the wonderful option of being able to return an item that doesn’t fit, I confidently selected the Medium size and waited for my order to arrive. I shouldn’t have been worried. Right out of the box, the quality of the materials and construction were right on par with all the great Alpinestars products I’ve interacted with in the past. With a pair of jeans on and the liner still installed, I began pulling the pants on. They felt a little snug around the hips, like I wouldn’t be able to get them on, but then I realized I hadn’t fully loosened the waist straps. Because these pants have a cover behind the fly (like a pair of boardshorts), you’re limited to the amount of movement you have compared to putting on a pair of jeans. With the waist strap loose, I had no trouble getting them on. If you’re planning to run with the suspenders, it’s most comfortable to tuck in your shirt. The high, padded back is great to keep out any unwanted breeze as well. Back to the suspenders for a moment, and the zipper around the waist, in particular; I have an Alpinestars Gunner WP jacket, sized M as well, that I purchased a few years ago and it mates up perfectly to these pants. If you run this option, you’ll need to be sure everything is tucked into the pant, however, otherwise you’ll run into issues pairing the zipper on the pant and jacket. So far, I’ve put about 200 miles of riding while wearing the Andes v2 pant, and it’s been exceptionally comfortable. The knee padding was in its lowest position when it arrived and it hit my knee a bit awkwardly, but there was plenty of adjustment to get it to a better position. Riding in Minnesota on a sportbike during the spring means some chilly mornings, and with the liner installed, I was completely comfortable riding at highway speeds at 38 degrees. There isn’t snow here year-round, however; with the liner installed, I found that I was getting overly warm when stopped at a traffic light for more than twenty seconds or so if there was direct sunlight and the temp was above 72 degrees. Your own level of comfort with heat will determine at what point the liner needs to be removed, which is as quick as unzipping the liner at the waist and undoing two snaps per leg down above the ankle. I haven’t had the opportunity to wear these in the rain yet, but if my experience with the Gunner WP jacket has proven anything, a ride through driving rain should be a non-issue. If you’re in the market for a pant that can handle the elements, while offering protection, style and comfort at a great price, I really don’t know if you can make a better choice.

Alpinestars really leaves you wanting for more due to their lack of sizing options. I suppose if every man was 5'5" and was the same weight, these pants and their corresponding sizes would work.I originally orders the L and the M to compare sizes. I'm 6' tall and weight 175lbs. My jeans waste is 32" , inseam is long, at 34".The size Large had the correct length for me, but the pants fit like parachutes. The waste was pretty accurate and felt like it was comfortable for my 32" waste. The size Medium was slightly short on my, especially when sitting on the bike, but at least they were not as wide. The waste was tighter, but manageable. So I stuck with the Mediums.I live in KS (Midwest). The Drystar waterproofing doesn't breath and the vents don't function super well when you're sitting down. In summary, I ended up using these as my non-hot weather pants.I've taken a few hits offroad in the pants and they protected me really well w/o showing any wear or tear. The style is neat, but again, Alpinestars don't make pants for tall and skinny legged men.

The quality of the product is great. I love the thermal layer that can be removed. The garment feels heavy and sturdy. In terms of materials and built quality, you can't go wrong. When shopping, make sure you rely on the size chart and size up rather than pick your regular size.As most European brands go, sizing is smaller. Plus, there's an inner pannel inside the zipper (for waterproofing, I'm assuming) that limits how wide the pants waist opens up to let the hips through. So even though the hips of the pants should fit based on the chart, the waist might get stuck, so take that into consideration as well.I never managed to pull them past my hips. I had to return them so I never go to test how good insulation/ventilation, and waterproofing are.

Good adv/touring/dual sport pants for shorter riders
19 March 2022

I'm 5'4" 160lbs with about a 27-inch inseam... on a good day. I ride dual sport, a combo of high-speed country/desert roads and easier trail riding at high elevation year-round. The Revit Sand gear I originally purchased in a "Large-Short" was ridiculously tight and the knee armor sat so low that it was unusable. However, the Andes in XL-short, fit about as good as someone built like me can get, and the knee armor is sufficiently placed once I put on my Leatt 4.5 boots. I'm sure these will be too hot for 90+ degree hard offroad riding, but for my altitude and style of riding, they seem to be fine for all conditions. I can confirm that the Andes gear is completely sufficient for riding high speed in 35-degree weather, probably even colder. I would even consider snowmobiling in these. Highly recommend these.

Great Touring Pants.
19 April 2023

These pants are typical touring wear, heavy, well made, a bit bulky, but flexible. I found them sized out too small, I normally take a Large & I had to go for a 2XL. On the plus side Alpinestars do offer them in Long, unlike a lot of others. These are quality pants, minus the warmth liner they're easy to wear, but be aware that there's no split at the ankle to unzip & get over your boots. Also there's no fly, just a pleated section to make getting them on & off easier.I found the attachment of the braces fiddly, one pair I tried had a attachment loop that was very difficult to get the buckle to go in. This was a surprise as normally Alpinestars quality control is excellent. There's plenty of ventilation through panels that open up & let air in right the way ... MoreThese pants are typical touring wear, heavy, well made, a bit bulky, but flexible. Other pants the air flow has to get through the rainproof membrane ( Goretex like material). I prefer this method. On the whole they are very well made & well worth the money.

Poorly Designed Liner & Armor
27 May 2023

I wanted to like these pants, but they are not designed well. The inner mesh liner is very loose and moves around too much, but the main issue is the armor and the pocket that holds it. The opening in the armor pocket is about 2/3 up from the bottom of the pocket and there is a thick Velcro piece holding the pocket shut. This means that when you sit down, the Velcro lump is right across your knee cap. Even without riding in these pants, I found the Velcro closure was uncomfortable. The armor is also not pre-formed to the knee and ends up being lumpy on the sides. Returned these pants.

I did not nor do I plan on zipping the Andes to a jacket at this point.Warmth and flow: Blocks wind and cold as advertised. So warm and VERY comfortable at up to triple digit speeds in low 40’s to high 50’s. Gets too warm above that but you can remove the thermal liner. Even at lower temps I just leave the liner in and wear a Dainese summer cool base layer (this stuff is genius!). Air flow through the thigh vents is mild to moderate only so if you are a sweat hog it may be an issue.Utility: the cargo pockets are deep and feel super secure with the Velcro. I have full confidence of storing my valuables in these pockets. The knee armor stays in place and is unobtrusive, so that you can ride and barely even feel anything. I see no need to upgrade or swap out the thin and porous knee and hip armor.Quality and finish: the light grey/red combo color looks very attractive and gives more visibility during overcame and lowlight riding. All the zippers, buttons and details of the material are solid, with no issues with seams or threads or discoloration, so that most will be amazed these are not at least another $90 or so more expensive, considering all the benefits. In my opinion the overall appearance of the Andes V3 is sporty enough to distinguish from the pure adventure look. The color design and not having “parachute legs” be baggy are big reasons for that. Conclusion:Solid investment, looks great, the comfort will spoil you, armor is sufficient and included. If I had to choose ONE thing I’d like is to have belt loops, but that’s it. Extremely satisfied, surprisingly impressed.Watch the sizing and decide if you need more airflow.

Sooo comfortable
2 June 2023

Love these pants! I wanted pants and a jacket that meet EU safety guidelines, and even though these pants are only rated prEN17092 Class A, I do feel like they'll help protect my legs in a skid. They're VERY comfortable. The inside is smooth, and the outside has several places where you can adjust the fit, with velcro at the waist, knees, and ankles. There's also an optional air vent on each thigh. These come with suspenders but also zip to any Alpinestars jacket. I wear these with the Alpinestars Stella T-GP Plus R v3 Air Jacket for summer.I bought the gray set because I didn't want to be soaking up a lot of sun in the summer, and so that I can be a little more visible on my black bike. I also added the hip protectors, sold separately.

Terrific product!
24 November 2022

I purchased the Alpinestars Andes 3 pants and matching jacket a few months ago. The quality of these are very good and it's nice to have to option to remove the thermal liners. I live in NW Florida and the odds are I'll never need more than the outer shells but those are more than enough for warmth and protection. I especially appreciate the added protection at potential contact points like elbows and knees. The one thing I would mention is that since they are manufactured in Asia, their sizing is quite a bit different than here in the US. I'm 5'10", 215 and needed XXL in the both the pants and jacket. Would normally be an L in pants and XL in coat. Other than that, I would 10/10 recommend.

The best all-around ADV pant I've found
3 April 2023

I've had these pants for about 18 months. They're my favorite in my regular rotation by far (also have 2 pairs of Sedici Marco pants and a pair of Venture R ITB pants). I've got about two thousand miles in them, some touring on road, some rambling around town on days off, a good chunk of off road from hard packed dirt trails to some "trails" I wish I hadn't bothered with. They're excellent. They're good for Autumn, Winter, and Fall riding, but I wouldn't wear them above 80F for cruising around and I wouldn't wear them above 60F for anything taxing off-tarmac. Build quality has been outstanding, comfort is awesome. The vents work as well as single-entry vents with no exhaust can. If I've got a gripe about them, it's the boot entry setup. Love my Sedici Marcos because you can unzip them and get your boots on quickly (Astars Toucans in my case) and then zip them up and roll. These take a bit more fight, especially if you're rocking the liner. I've found that disconnecting the liner from the pant cuff at the bottom makes it a bit easier, but it's still a hassle, especially in the morning at a campsite.Protection-wise, I could not be happier. I've dropped the bike at least a dozen times in them off road and have never had an issue, and had one low-speed, on-road tumble at about 20mph in the rain and didn't feel any worse for wear even though I came down on my right knee.I've been using Drystar products since the Andes 1 back in like, 2014 and have always been happy with them as far as waterproofing goes. For getting caught in the rain, they do the job beautifully. The aforementioned lack of a zip closure also does have the positive effect of making water crossings/big puddles/missteps in parking lots a non-issue. I've tucked them in to the boots a few times when I was really worried about crossing moving water, and while they aren't really designed for ITB use they do it as well as any non-ITB pant can. I'd buy more, but I think the Halo pants look like they solve my only really issue with these pants which is the lack of ventilation, though those are more expensive and don't have the pedigree that the Andes line carries. Definitely worth the money. e
