Best trail runner. Knee pain gone.

I've got small, wide, square-shaped feet and these shoes meet most of my needs. I love the colour, shape, and wide toe box of these cuties. The thin waterproof material was a bit of an adjustment from previous trainers; sometimes these shoes feel cold without all the padding of typical trainers so I tend to wear warmer socks. I wish there was more volume for toes- not width, just height- but that's just my feet in any shoes. These are great traction shoes off the pavement, but I find them somewhat terrifying on urban terrain- smooth pavement in the rain and tile floors mean I will be ice-skating in these shoes. Is it worth it? Sure is! Comfy toes, no aches or pains, and just keeping me cautious and humble when I am running around the city.

I love Altras, I really do. The toe box and fit are phenomenal. But here's the problem, and it remains with the Lone Peak 6s: the inside lips, just above the last lace hole, tend to fray. And fast! This is what happened with my 4s too. I've never had this happen with any other brand.I'm honestly not even sure how it happens so quickly, but within a week of having the Lone Peak 6's, the inside lip on the right was coming completely frayed. Within a month, the lip on the left shoe was starting to do the same. It doesn't impede functionality but does look pretty bad.The only other thing I can think to criticize is that the grip isn't the best on the market, but in terms of functionality it's a great shoe. I simply don't want to keep buying shoes that fray so fast.

I can't stop wearing them
28 November 2022

I purchased the wide Lone Peak 5's and they are the greatest shoes I've ever worn! Right out of the box, the wide width fit my foot and with arch support, I hiked for 3 months straight (15-30 miles daily with a backpack) and they were the best. The tread does wear out quickly, but that's a problem with Altra shoes that they just can't seem to fix. The tread was fantastic - I had great traction on steep slopes and over rocky terrain, so it's sad it wore out within a month (about 400 miles).DO NOT PURCHASE THE LONE PEAK 6 AS A REPLACEMENT. I am so disappointed that they made the wide LESS WIDE, the toe box smaller, volume smaller, just terrible. The Lone Peak 5's have high volume so you don't lose circulation from the shoe pressing down on the top of your foot, and the 5's are actually wide for those of us who have actually wide feet (I'm talking 2E or 4E if I can find it). If I could buy 10 pairs of these I would.I still wear these shoes despite giant holes in the sides and zero tread. They are insanely comfortable and I will continue to wear them and get rid of the stupid 6's.

It's a great shoe.
20 July 2022

I usually wear either a 8.5 or 9 W in women's shoes. I have a wide forefoot, narrow heel, and high arch. I prefer a high volume shoe due to the high arch and orthotic use. In the Lone Peak 6, a size 9 is a good fit, however this is not a high volume shoe in terms of midfoot, arch, and toe depth. So I can wear a lightweight sock, but not a winter weight sock. I cannot use my standard orthotic in this shoe, must use a very thin orthotic. I found the 9 W to be a sloppy loose fit on my foot so 9 it was. The shoe is very comfortable and my little toe does not rub on the outer edge, like with regular shape shoes. The right heel rubbed in an odd way for about a week, then it became comfortable. This was true with another pair of Lone Peak 6s as well. I wear it for walking ... MoreI usually wear either a 8.5 or 9 W in women's shoes. I have a wide forefoot, narrow heel, and high arch. I wear it for walking on trails, dirt roads, in the yard, and occasionally around town. I wish the Altra website would say which shoes are higher volume.I cannot say much about customer service. I ordered an 8.5 originally, sent it back immediately because it was too small. It was received by Altra's shipping agent over 6 weeks ago per shipper tracking verification, well within the 30 day timeframe, and I have yet to receive a credit to my card. I have asked customer service for assistance and have been waiting for some time for a response. For this reason I doubt I will order directly from Altra again. Get on the ball, folks.

Lengthy review: Trail runner and Backpacking, width and size
7 July 2021

I bought these looking for a better trail runner for long runs and a hiking shoe for overnight backcountry trips. As a trail runner: This shoe seems to fit the bill, but I prefer more cushion for longer runs. There is plenty of toe box room to accommodate my fairly wide forefoot in the regular size, wide not needed. The return is springy resulting in a pretty fast ride. Compared to my Torin 4's, which I do use on trails with some rockiness to them even though they are "road" shoes, they definitely aren't as comfortable overall. My torins seem to retain a bit of cushion for the entire run compared to the lone peaks. Width wise, they look very similar, however the lone peaks have a laminated portion that goes along the whole bottom of the shoe and the torins only ... MoreI bought these looking for a better trail runner for long runs and a hiking shoe for overnight backcountry trips. As a trail runner: This shoe seems to fit the bill, but I prefer more cushion for longer runs. Compared to my Torin 4's, which I do use on trails with some rockiness to them even though they are "road" shoes, they definitely aren't as comfortable overall. My torins seem to retain a bit of cushion for the entire run compared to the lone peaks. Width wise, they look very similar, however the lone peaks have a laminated portion that goes along the whole bottom of the shoe and the torins only have that until the point where the shoe bends. It is at this spot on the torins that I get a hot spot around mile 4 because the end of the lamination creates a tougher spot for the foot. I've battled this by taping my foot at that spot, but it's still a plus for the Lone peaks. The torins are also more fitted around the heel and midfoot, which is good for staying put during a run.As a hiker: I went to the Lone peaks from Merrell Moab hiking boots for the toe room. Hiking boots are just too bulky and squish my toes; I find them painful and annoying after several days on the trail. I carry a pack about 30-35 lbs and found the Lone peaks to be MUCH better for my toes and overall leg fatigue. Also, zero blisters! However, they are definitely not durable, which is typical for an Altra shoe, and I find I need more cushion under my forefoot come day 2.5-3. They have helped with descents because I am able to fully spread my foot and stabilize better than with boots. After 23 miles of hiking the AT in TN, they have some gouges in the foam, some of the rough outer coating has been rubbed off, and I can see the lamination starting to come out where the forefoot bends. I have a lingering pain under my big toes, which with hiking boots would go away after an hour or so being off my feet. Perhaps it's just my feet needing a bit more cushion compared to other people.Fit: My foot technically measures as a size 8 by various charts. My Torin 4s are an 8.5 and I wear an 8.5 in virtually every other brand of shoes (Brooks, asics, reebok, crocs, Merrell to name a few). The 8.5 in these was way too long. I downsized to an 8 regular and the length is perfect. The width is perfect after a mile or two of use.

Morton's Neuroma This Shoe is for You! Prayers Answered!
17 November 2022

I purchased the Lone Peak 6 - WIDE. What a blessing these trail shoes have been. I have Morton's Neuroma and I finally found a shoe that is wide enough and I can even wear my Correct Toes with them! They are trail shoes, but I wear them on and off trails and they are simply the best. PLEASE don't stop making these shoes. If you are reading this review, I need you to pay close attention to how the lacing (U-shape) starts which I believe explains why these shoes are so comfy through the widest part of the foot!I am petite with really wide feet and these are truly the only wide shoes that fit perfectly and I have tried on countless wide shoes from different makers! Oh, the Altra Torin 5 - Wide did not work for me!A Million Thanks to Altra for the Lone Peak 6 - Wide ... MoreI purchased the Lone Peak 6 - WIDE. What a blessing these trail shoes have been. My feet swim in these shoes
19 April 2023

I've waited over a year to write this review, hoping I just had to get used to the fit of these "highly rated" shoes. I run about 30-35 miles/week, about 10 miles of those on trails. I have a wide toebox, narrowish heel. Otherwise neutral foot. My feet absolutely SWIM in these shoes. I have the laces tightened so much the eyelets touch each other on either side. I feel very little support and little cushioning on my trail runs. In fact, these shoes have made me feel less confident on rocky or steep terrain, as my foot just does not feel secure. I typically wear Brooks but didn't like their trail options and their shoes are always a bit narrow on my wide foot. NOT WIDE. Low volume and narrow. Get an older model instead.
28 November 2022

I purchased the wide version after wearing my Lone Peak 5's to threads. THIS IS A TERRIBLE DOWNGRADE FROM PREVIOUS LONE PEAK MODELS. Here's why:1) I specifically purchased the wide version to accommodate my 2E/4E width feet. Older models fit, but these are NOT as wide. I expected the "wide" to actually be wide like they used to be.2) The volume decreased with this model. The top of my foot gets crushed and I lose circulation because they are much lower volume than previous Lone Peak models.3) They are not true to size like previous Lone Peak models. I felt like the arch was in the wrong place and I had to jump up half a size - AND THEY STILL WEREN'T WIDE ENOUGH!~The only reason they do not get one star is because the tread is phenomenal. I suffered major injury to my ankle a few years back and I tried (through Amazon Prime) eight, no less! varieties of shoes that provided maximum cush. The Lone Peak (4.5 at the time) won hands down because they were, by leagues, the most comfortable! Not to mention they offered an all burgundy style so that I could have one pair for dress and one pair for the real dirty everyday! They are all I wear! They wore out and then I purchased the Lone Peak 6. They were even better! A little higher and therefore a bit more cushion! HOWEVER! I was hard pressed to select a style as Altra had removed a single color version and had reverted to the common clown style colors that, it seems, all the sports shoe companies have to offer! I was hard pressed to select a style as Altra had removed a single color version and had reverted to the common clown style colors that, it seems, all the sports shoe companies have to offer! For those of us who wear them everyday for anything, a sports shoe with a white sole and an orange stripe or whatever is currently being offered DESTROYS a chic outfit! PLEASE offer an all one color (sole and shoe) dark muted color such as Teal, Burgundy or forest green so that those of us who wear sports shoes everyday everywhere can pair them with something other than sports clothes! It's simple too, if you watch the availability of sizes you can see the more garish ones are always in full supply and the muted ones sell out first! The shoe company that realizes they could add subtle downplayed shoes will reach an entire unfulfilled market, that is, the people who wear sports shoes everywhere1 That's money in the bank for you! And not black! Black tennis shoes are gross. It's a fact. Yep rich colors. Teal. Burgundy. Forest green.I will say in the Lone peak's favor that everyday that I wear them I consciously think as I am walking along "God I love these shoes! They are like walking on clouds" and they stay that way, too!" But PLEASE! Stop with the ugly colored shoes and white soles!I will also note the Altra 6 added these ridges on the protruding rear edges and the ridges do nothing as far as I can tell but collect dust and make the shoe look yucky, ie., not clean. There are also additional tiny air vents but then the toes also look dirty all the time as the tiny holes collect dirt! Also during the first snowfall I felt cold bits as the snow entered the shoe's holes/vents and then melted! Stream line please! Like 4.5's!I hope to see all teal, all burgundy and or all forest green. If you don't offer something more tasteful and less clownlike (and why do women always get the MOST garish combos???) I am going to have to begin a new search for cush... You are missing a huge market!Blissed out by comfort but hate the colors so I guess that's a 3.
