Excellent comfort and support excellent for backpacking

I'm guessing this owes to Altra's heritage as a running shoe maker where much of their secret sauce lies in their biomechanics research into foot shapes. Most boots I've had, both hiking-specific and work-style boots, tend to favor traditional designs (justified from a time-tested durability standpoint), but require significantly longer break-in periods, especially leather boots, than the Olympus 5. No blisters or arch cramps or pinched toes even out of the box. Note that they run about a half size small in my experience.Design 4/5: Also, ankle support is the best thing in a hiking boot, period. You will step on a loose rock and roll your ankle, and when you do, you'll be glad this shoe has the mid-rise upper design. What is especially nice about the Olympus 5's upper is the choice of a soft cushioned material; it provides a good balance of support for your ankle without restricting your range of motion or irritating/rubbing your anklebone like some stiffer uppers can. The shoe's design itself is perfectly pleasing to look at it, but not especially inspired. The two colorways feature your usual "outdoorsy" fare of blues, greys, and browns. With the comeback of 90's colors, I would have liked to see some more funky and bright colors, or at least, an international red/orange colorway.Durability 5/5: In the roughly 10 days of hiking I've done in the shoes, I'm pleased to report that there is no noticeable damage or wear of any kind besides the usual light scuffs and scrapes. I am slightly bow-legged so the way I walk and run is especially abusive to the outer heels of my soles, and in this regard, the Vibram outsole leaves me convinced it will last thousands of miles before it wears down. I was a little worried about the suede outer lining holding up compared to a leather toebox, but so far so good, and it cleaned up easily.Performance 5/5: I'm not a weight weenie or ultralight backpacker by any means, but every ounce you save even on your feet can make a big difference. Given the absence of thick leather, these boots feel incredibly light and agile, even after hours of hiking. You could conceivably do some trail running in these boots and not be worried about the weight penalty. Grip is outstanding, as would be expected from Vibram, on everything from hardpacked dirt to loose gravel. The only time I felt the boots get slippery was when we trekked through some heavy mud, but most boots would suffer the same fate, even with larger lugs in the tread.

Good stuff

I have Olympus 4 and 5 trail shoes and took a chance on these GTX Mid Boots based on my enjoyment of those other shoes. The Boots have been great...still too early to tell on durability, but after a few mid length hikes they are holding up well, keep my foot warm and dry (only been in snow so far), and fit is great. I had to be sure and cinch up the ankle collar to lock down the heel well, but that did the trick. Locked down heel and wide forefoot makes for a happy guy. Size wise..I went up a half size compared to my Olympus 4 and 5 trail shoes, if that helps. Since I wear boot socks with these and they have the GTX lining, I'm glad I went up half size. Impressive design... but lacking in function
3 March 2023

I bought these mid-Jan 2023. I wanted to love these boots so much. The design is sick, they're super comfortable, they're warm in sub zero temperatures, and the tread traction is awesome. However, I bought them primarily for the waterproof function. The waterproofing capability doesn't last. They're water-resistant, at best. I took them snowshoeing four times this season and on the fourth outing, the waterproofing failed at the toe of the each boot. The first three times I took them out, temperatures were well below freezing (in the 10s and low 20s), so I don't think the water proofing was really tested. On the fourth outing, it was sunny and temperatures were above freezing and the snow was slushy. I haven't had this issue with waterproof Merrell, Danner, or even ... MoreI bought these mid-Jan 2023. Love the grip but seam around achilles gives me blisters
18 August 2022

I love Altras and have worn them for years for hiking and trail running. My go to shoe in recent years has been the Lone Peak Hiker. They are super comfortable, light, and provide solid ankle support. My only criticism of that shoe is that the grip/sole tends to wear out really quickly and isn't amazing in wet conditions. When I heard about the Vibram mega grip being added to the Olympus series with a high top option, I was very excited. I wore these shoes on a handful of 10+ mile hikes/trail runs with some in wet conditions and the grip was excellent. Unfortunately, I got blisters on my achilles tendons on every hike. I even tried wearing the thickest hiking socks I own and still got the blisters. Next version - best backpacking boot on the market?
29 September 2022

I've been waiting for these to come out for a long time and was really excited to test them out on the 40 mile Rae Lakes Loop in Kings Canyon National Park. While on the loop, all I could think about was how to improve these shoes and I arrived at a few conclusions: 1) we basically need mid-height boots to mitigate ankle roll injuries while wearing heavier backpacks, 2) we need wider toe boxes that allow our toes to fully splay to prevent blisters, 3) we need thick zero-drop cushioned mid-soles to dampen the pounding on our feet while wearing heavier backpacks over long distances, and 4) we need full Vibram rubber outsoles with large lugs to prevent slippage on rocks covered by dust or water. The Lone Peak all weather mid hiker was a great attempt, but the midsoles were too thin, and the extra material (e-vent/leather/rubber fabric) narrowed the toe box significantly to the point of preventing full toe-splay, which caused blisters. The new Olympus 5 hike mid GTX provided the extra midsole thickness, but the Vibram outsole had weak glue points causing it to rip off the shoe and the extra material (Gortex/leather/rubber fabric) prevented full toe-splay causing blisters. Also, there were quality control issues with the ankle harness in the store: some (not all) of the ankle harnesses were too thin at the top lace hooks causing pressure pain upon tightening the upper laces. I'll have to return this shoe, but I'll definitely purchase the next version because I believe in the overall design concept. For the next version of this shoe can you please focus on the following? 1) Make the ankle harness more comfortable and functional to mitigate ankle role injuries while wearing heavier backpacks (35-60 lbs), 2) widen the toe box by 3-5 mm at the 5th digit (pinky toe) or add some sort of expandable "pinky toe pouch" to allow for full toe splay to occur, which will prevent blistering, and 3) full surface Vibram outsole tread so that there are no weak spots that will cause the tread to fall off while on the trail. These are the big three! Thanks!

Nice for terrain that isn't too extreme

I like to hike quite a bit. I've hiked in Colorado and Moab and used my North Face hiking shoes. They are low tops. So, I was excited to try the Altra mids back at some trails near my home in Missouri. The trails were leaf covered and rocky, but not terribly different as far as elevation. The Altra's were a bit tight on the inside of my ankles on each shoe. After loosening up the top laces, that seemed to correct the fit. They were pretty comfortable on the trail. I did notice the spots on each ankle starting to rub a bit after about an hour of walking. I did have on mid-thick socks which I think helped. The toe box is quite roomy on these which is nice on flat portions, but I wouldn't want to do steep hikes in these for very long at all. If you're doing trail running on fairly flat trails, these would be great. I'd hesitate to buy these if you are hiking hilly or mountainous areas. They aren't waterproof. For a $200+ pair of hiking shoes, I'm not sure I'd buy these, especially since I want a shoe I can wear in any locale. For that reason, I wouldn't recommend these to friends or family. My $80 North Face hiking shoes are much more comfortable. That's too bad, because I really wanted to like these. Not sure the style is my cup of tea either. They kind of look like snow boots, but I wouldn't wear them in the snow since they aren't waterproof.

Shoes made for rough terrain, comfort, and versatility

As an avid runner and hiker, I was super excited to try the Altra Running Men's Olympus 5 Hike Mid GTX shoes, and they surely didn't disappoint in any way. On rugged terrain, the Altra Olympus 5 Hike Mid GTX offered great traction with mid ankle support, and I didn't slip on any wet surfaces near water streams. I also noticed that on smoother terrain the shoes carried me effortlessly, as they were lightweight and offered a nice comfortable cushioning for my feet. These shoes fit better than my Hoka running shoes, which are a little too narrow. They also offer better traction than my Hoka shoes. The Altra Olympus shoes are also more lightweight than my Brooks running shoes, and offer better balance of cushioning. I noticed that the Altra Olympus 5 Hike shoes were not too firm or plush on the inside, and gave my feet the perfect amount of support. I will surely look to Altra for my next pair of shoes, as they are made to fit my feet, easy to wear, and keep my feet on the go without any pain and blisters. I have been recommending the Altra Running Olympus 5 Hike Mid GTX shoes to all of my friends that go hiking with me.

So far so good!

Since I saw these from a video at the OR event, I got super excited and I've been waiting for them to drop. Got them in today and I was ECSTATIC-this is the exact boot I've been waiting for from Altra so I didn't have to buy boots from Hoka (I refuse to wear anything that's not zero-drop or foot-shaped).Positive:-The cushioning is nice for when my plantar fascitis flares up and I can't wear my Lone Peak Hikers or Lone Peaks-The tongue sits super well on the tops of my feet and is nicely padded-Love the top two traditional boot locking eyelets-The Vibram sole adds a great amount of grip much like the previous Olympus models. I even got a little scramble in with them and they worked great-To quote a friend of mine, "They're pretty"Negative:-They're listed as ... MoreSince I saw these from a video at the OR event, I got super excited and I've been waiting for them to drop. I'm not sure, time will tell if I just need to break them in a little, but that'd be odd for Altra.-Being a GTX boot, they don't breathe particularly well in the 90-degree weather in the Colorado desert, but that was to be expected.Other than that, great start after the first few miles. I'm excited to see how they wear.

The Olympic 5 Hike Mid GTX are a good pair of hiking boots.

I'm an avid hiker and need a hiking shoe with a big toe box. I have waited to review the Men's Olympus 5 Hike Mid GTX until I've truly tested it. Nothing like hiking with this boot through varied terrain, weather and hikes to get to know the boot. The Olympic 5 Hike Mid GTX is the most comfortable boot I have worn in many years. I started hiking with this boot June 30, 2022 and have hiked multiple day hikes and a couple of backpacking trips totaling over 150 miles and over 28000 ft elevation gain. Over half of these hikes would be considered HARD by most hiking apps. So what do I think? I have owned several different Altra shoes over the years and the Olympic 5 Hike Mid GTX has been the most versatile, and enduring with a few exceptions. My feet are comfortable for miles, whether I have a light pack or heavier backpacking loads. I have Morton Neuromas in both feet and these boots are a godsend, almost as if I don't have neuromas. Now for some details. 1.) The very first thing I did before the first hike, was to change shoelaces to some that were at least a few inches longer. The stock shoelaces were too short for my foot comfort and ease of fitting. 2.) These boots handle and grip various surfaces on very hard hikes, going either up or down. 3.) I've read reviews with discussions relating to toe being pushed or jammed into the front of the boot when going downhill. That would be true for most boots and shoes especially as it gets steeper and those with wide toe boxes. There are ways to tie your boots differently before you head downhill that can mitigate this. This is true with this boot. 4.) I also read a review discussing some lugs from the sole detaching. This happened to me also, I do beat up boots because of where I hike. I used "Shoe Goo'' to reattach them several hikes ago and so far it has worked. 5.) I also hike with Olympus 4 shoes, in places like Sedona, and the desert around Palm Springs and Joshua Tree. These are dry areas and the Olympus 4 are great for that, but a bit of water goes right in. So the Olympic 5 Hike Mid GTX I thought would be the answer in the Pacific Northwest. Well Gortex or even Event waterproofing has limits, especially for shoes. I've hiked in rain and snow in the Olympic 5 Hike Mid GTX. Your feet do get wet. It does take awhile to soak through, but after 10 miles in the rain most waterproofing starts failing a little here and there, especially if you add 6 inches of snow. In the PNW we learn to wear proper wet clothing, so I never got uncomfortable in the Olympic 5 Hike Mid GTX, I didn't even really know I had wet feet. My last hike in the snow and rain, I assumed my feet were getting wet, but didn't know for sure until I took the boot off. That's not true with many other boots and shoes. 6.) While hiking on wet and/or slick surfaces I was surprised and very pleased at the good traction with these boots. Made me like them even more. 7.) For Safety on really slick snow on very steep downhill sections I put on Microspikes, which fit just fine and worked great on the Olympic 5 Hike Mid GTX. Being very light boots and more flexible than heavier boots I was happy that the microspikes did not cause any undo pleasure or crush any part of the boot. 8.) If the Olympic 5 Hike Mid GTX does get wet, they dry out pretty easily. 8.) I have custom insoles which I insert into the Olympic 5 Hike Mid GTX after I pull out the stock insoles. My custom insoles fit just fine and do not negatively affect the fit or the roomy toe box.
