Amazon Fire TV Cube 4K

Do you spend your evenings channel surfing for something good to watch? Then it's time for this Amazon Fire TV Cube. There're tons of apps to choose from, including catch up, Amazon Prime, Netflix and Disney plus, so you'll never hear 'there's nothing on TV' again. The cube also supports 4K UHD resolution, Dolby Vision, HDR and Dolby Atmos, which means there're not only loads of shows, but they'll look and sound incredible as well. Plus, with a super-fast processor and Wi-Fi 6E support, you'll be jumping into those boxsets in no time. It comes with a remote control, but since it works with voice commands, you can get Alexa to find the film you want and put an end to scrolling - ideal for when your hands are in the popcorn box too.

Awfully slow interface now as it is more GoogleTV centric. I can forgive it on a firetv stick but the Cube just is garbage. The Ethernet jack is only 100 Meg, which makes zero sense (but it is built in so that is a step up from the previous editions external dongle). It is still running a marginally improved same CPU from the last generation firetv cube, has 2 Meg of ram, which is just abysmal (same as it’s predecessor) and 16 Meg of storage. The Bluetooth is 5.2 opposed to 5.0 which is not game changing by any means and nothing has changed compared to the prior gen in terms of format support (2160p, atmos, hdr10+, all your common formats). There is an hdmi in port now. I cannot find any specifics as to it being hdmi 2.0 vs 2.1 but nothing here shouts 2.1. You can ... MoreAwfully slow interface now as it is more GoogleTV centric. You can potentially control a third party device with Alexa if that’s your thing but with HDMI-CEC,it doesn’t make much sense. All in all, this is a bust in my opinion. They have also locked down some of if not all of the ability to install your own APK files so you are locked to the App Store of Amazon. Fire OS is actually Android 9, so enjoy those feature, security and cve updates from Android TV 11+, it is also purely 32 bit but since it does not support modern apps or apks outside of Amazon’s store that won’t impact you. You can do your own homework on the cpu but in the end the chip is an Amlogic POP1-G under clocked and the mali gpu is embedded. Wifi6e is great on paper but not many of us nor is there a great deal of certified routers or even network cards in deployment. The storage is god awful slow emmc. In the end, I cannot recommend this device as there isn’t more than some codec licensing which will only apply to corner cases. The device is slow and it’s underpowered compared to the latest AppleTV which can do all the same but at a lower price point (Wi-Fi model). Also, there are alternatives that do almost all of this and will work equally well at a cheaper price point.

This thing is fast. Apps open and close noticeably faster than the sticks and really any other streaming device I have, including the nvidia shield tv. I love it for that but it has an annoying glitch that has not been fixed even though Amazon has known about for months. If you have it auto detect hdr format it will not properly display colors everytime you turn on the device. It corrects when you start HDR programming and then you get out of it and it's fine. But it resets when you turn it off and come back to watch later. This is something that didn't happen with the fires stick I previously had and should not be happening with their higher prices device. I have always liked the cube, especially because I have an older tv in my bedroom that although is "smart" is a very limited and outdated system. The main issue I had with the older cube is the delay in remote/cube communication. Also speed of loading apps and extra connector for network, that can also be really slow. I was much faster on wifi which should have been the opposite. Anyway ALL issues have been resolved. This interface and processor is lightning fast. Faster than my tvs with Fire built in. The mic is so good is can hear a whisper from 12 feet. And connectivity with wifi6 is excellent. I can finally plug Cat cable right into the cube and get the fastest speed available. Apps download so fast and run even faster. Good but not great.

I've had the previous cube, so I can compare it to that... Previous cube: Slower but less glitchy. Felt much more refined. Overall it was a good cube. Never had issues with it. New cube: VERY glitchy. I'm hoping they fix it with updates. SLOW for something that is supposed to be utilizing a faster octa-core processor. Very disappointing. The scrolling lags and sometimes does not even materialize icons for the apps, which gets frustrating. Also, the only way to get a fast connection is through wifi. Otherwise, you'll need to get a USB ethernet adapter to get decent speeds. If you use the built-in ethernet, you're limited to 100mbps. We're in 2023 and they're still using slow speeds for the ethernet connection. I have 1gbps fiber and I would like to use a stable ... MoreI've had the previous cube, so I can compare it to that... The best I get out of the USB 2.0 connection is 200mbps, which is better than the built-in port. The only good thing about this is the upscaling. It does make a difference. Looks a lot more detailed than my previous cube for some reason, even though the previous cube is supposed to be 4k. Plus I like being able to utilize my Atmos and Dolby Vision HDR setup. If it weren't for this, I'd probably just stick with my old cube. If you don't care about upscaling, atmos and Dolby Vision and/or utilize the wifi 6e connection, then you should stick with the older cube. No need to upgrade.

Good hardware, sucky software
3 January 2022

Well, I've owned Fire TV Sticks before, but never the Cube. This is the 2nd gen. I gotta say, compared to the Sticks (even the 4k one), this thing is definitely more snappy and speedy. It's also much smaller than I'd imagined. What I like: - Compared to Fire TV Sticks: 16 GB storage, Alexa, better and faster hardware - Android based, so you can sideload stuff - Great if you have Amazon Prime What I don't like: - Must connect to an Amazon account (understandable though) - Have preconfigured streaming service buttons on the remote control (top left: prime video, top right: Netflix, bottom left: Disney+, bottom right: hulu) - On screen keyboard doesn't follow QWERTY format. It follows the alphabetical format ABCDEF... WHY? - Launcher. It's... it's a homepage of ads ... MoreWell, I've owned Fire TV Sticks before, but never the Cube. This is the 2nd gen. It follows the alphabetical format ABCDEF... WHY? - Launcher. It's... it's a homepage of ads that makes it hard to access the apps you've downloaded. Got a plex server or wanna play some games? You will have to either press the left or right button a few times on the homescreen to access your list of apps or hold the home key + click right to access the list of apps. I can understand this if you are inside the ecosystem and only plan on using streaming services... but as a poweruser, this sucks - Forced updates A few things to note: - Although it comes with 16 GB storage, the software alone takes up 5-6 gb, so realistically speaking you only have 10 GB of space - If you can't control the volume of your TV or shut it down, go into settings and configure it there so that it can - Although all Fire TVs support mouse pointers, you have to use a mouse or something like the steam controller to make it show up. Anything else is in the gray area, unless there's some niche app on the phone that I've not heard of. I would love to know if there are though. That would be amazing. With that said... where are the USB-A ports for non bluetooth mice/keyboard? Now, this is a lot of complaints haha. HOWEVER, the main goal of this device is media consumption. For that, it's great. Therefore, I'm giving it a 4*.

You can tell that it’s a great quality the buttons are easy to push and labeled so that you know what all of the buttons are for. The remote is a great size it fits perfect in your hand. Remote is easy to use well labeled you have easy access to prime video button Netflix Disney+ and Hulu buttons directly on the fire TV remote. The remote is nice sleek well-made and not super heavy. It comes with batteries also the remote takes two AAA batteries that are provided. If you do not want to use the remote you’re able to control everything using Alexa. You’re able to tell Alexa to turn on the TV, open prime video, search for action movies or whatever genre you’re looking for, increase the volume, rewind or pause the movie, switch to cable turn off the TV. There are so many different amazing options that do you have access to with this fire TV cube. You also are able to video call using the device just by connecting a USB WebCam to make to a video calls. And they give you a link that provides directions that are very easy for you to use to walk you through using this feature. I really like that there is privacy control with this device. You’re able to manage your voice history very easily with this device. You can tell Alexa to delete what you just said or delete everything you’ve ever said. The Fire TV cube also lights up a pretty blue color on the front where the light bar is. You have four buttons on top of the TV cube that are the microphone on and off button the volume buttons and the action button. This device is so neat and has made things way more high-tech in our household everyone absolutely loves using this device. I highly recommend getting one you will be so glad you did.

Stepped up to the Gen3 because the Gen2 was having issues with over saturated skin tones once I switched to a TV with HDR. Didn't have the issue with the 1080P non HDR I used before. Don't have the issue with the Gen 3 either, so it did fix that. The Wi-Fi 6 is good, getting 450Mbps download so the 100Mbps NIC isn't an issue. The 4 core processor makes moving around pretty effortless and apps open quickly. Haven't used the find my remote feature yet. Note about Amazon Music on this thing: You CANNOT create playlist or add music to a playlist. Went through 5 people on a support chat today and they said use another device. No! I will cancel my Unlimited subscription and keep using Tidal! Connected to my Denon DRA-800H, 24-bit/192kHz music, streams and plays fine. ... MoreStepped up to the Gen3 because the Gen2 was having issues with over saturated skin tones once I switched to a TV with HDR. Another thing is Amazon Music does not have an "exit" it keeps running and you have to go to settings/apps/manage apps/ and force stop it, else it might start on its own while you are watching something else. I use this mainly for streaming audio, so this is why only 3 stars. All in all, it is a good device.

There are four buttons on the top – an Alexa activation button, a lower volume button, a higher volume button, and a mute button. I am happy and would definitely recommend it.
