A decent follow up to the previous model

This took much time to solve with Apple Support - best part of a day.On the positive side the switch from the old MacBook worked well using Time Machine to restore everything I had installed and stored. It is a good Apple machine, essentially, and the support is excellent, even though it would have been nicer not to need it.No problems with anything other than that noted above and even with hindsight I would still have bought it.

The left shift key was stuck down when I took out the box. I was able to get it to come up; but it continued to be sticky, that is, it would not immediately pop up after being released. Seems like something dirty or sticky is under the keys. Scared something might have been dropped or spilled by previous owner. Needless to say, I’m returning and will find another. Also, It’s clear no one took the time to clean this comp before shipping. Several small areas like the cut out to lift the lid has the oil dirt build up you often see these devices develop over time. Very easy clean, not sure why it was not done

Finally, a good quality laptop!

That being said, this laptop has been very reliable for me so far and I haven't had any complications. It is very user friendly and the display is super nice. It's safe to say that apple by far has the best products when it comes to phones or laptops. So glad I ditched my Lenovo for this new MacBook. If you are a student or someone who is working from home during this pandemic, I highly recommend getting one of the new Apple laptops! I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Great, but needs more ports
10 June 2020

I bought this MB Air to replace a decade old MB Pro. The Pro had lots of connection ports, one for power, one for ethernet, one for Firewire 800, one for Display Port, two for USB 2.0, one for headphones, one for an SD card. The Air has only two Thunderbolt 3 ports. Something as simple as connecting two external hard drives to copy files from one to the other becomes a problem. I have an unpowered USB hub, but as soon as I connected two bus-powered drives to the hub, they wouldn't work. If I connect each drive to one of the Tbolt ports, now I have no power connection. I wasn't interested in paying another $500 to get a MB Pro with four Tbolt ports, now I'm wondering if that was a bad idea. A powered dock that supports Tbolt 3 as well as USB 3.2 gen 2 costs almost $300 and is a bulky peripheral that must be pluged into an AC socket. The old MagSafe power connectors work better than USB-C in my opinion, as they can be connected easily by feel, even in the dark. Of course a MagSafe charger does not use up an important port.I am also annoyed that there are no hardshell cases available yet even though it's been three months since the MB Air started shipping.Other than the port and case annoyances, I am very happy with the MB Air. It is much, much faster than my old MB Pro and having USB 3.2 gen 2 capability makes transfers to external drives crazy fast to what I was used to with Firewire 800 and USB 2.0. Touch ID is a fantastic time-saving feature. This is my first Mac with a Retina display and I am impressed.I suppose for users who flip their laptops every 2-3 years, this MB Air might not seem too exciting but users who hang on to their Macs for 10 years like me, it's a quantum leap.

Mac convert - which I had done it sooner

Tl;dr: If you're a Mac user, there's no insight I can give you. If you're a Windows/ChromeOS person wondering if you should switch, do it. I was so thrilled my review here ended up being 8 paragraphs.... I decided to cut most of it out and save it for a blog. The short story, I'm happy and wish I had done this sooner.More thoughts:I have light Mac experience prior to this purchase - mostly when I hopped on a client's computer at their office and they happened to have a Mac. It was always a little frustrating not knowing the shortcuts and I always seemed to unintentionally minimize windows and be unclear about how to get them back. Ha!Well, the main company I work with now is Mac based. They constantly send things via text/iMessage - and its clear they're on their computers while I'm struggling on my phone to keep up with the links and docs being sent around. Emailing the links they sent from my phone to my computer was honestly getting on my nerves. Now that I'm assisting with reviewing docs they create in Keynote and Pages as well, I reached my limit of trying to fit into their Mac world. Maybe its a dumb reason to switch operating systems, but it was the push I needed and I think I did it at exactly the right time.Apple really is its own little cult world. But if you're like me and you have Apple everything else (I already have the phone, watch, iPad and Pencil), just do yourself a favor, get the computer and complete the circle. And if you already have an iPhone or Apple account, setup will take you less than 5 minutes. Since I keep most of my files in Dropbox, transferring files isn't even something I had to do. I connected my Apple ID, downloaded Chrome (since 8 years of bookmarks and Google account preferences are there) and I was off and running. The main reason I held off of making the switch for years was the price - my thinking was always, well, if my PC goes bust, I can get two or three more for the same price. I still think that, BUT the cost was worth it on day one for helping me streamline my work life and personal entertainment/education/reading experience.

No complaints so far.Dude basically tossed it to me in the parking lot, but no problems. The computer is easy to smudge (the outside) so I would be mindful of that if that’s important to you.For context I’m a graduate student and predominantly use the computer for school related activities. Be aware of what Big Sur can and cannot be compatible with, as I was disappointed with some games/software that weren’t compatible. Worth the price in my opinion, while the camera is less than amazing, the screen is pretty and the keyboard is smooth. If you’re going to drop the cash on a computer and you don’t know a ton about them, you might as well get a Mac. I’ve never owned a Mac, and I’m a recent iPhone user, and the convenience of it all is very awesome. I can delete anything from my phone from my computer and vice versa. It’s nice. The computer works well for school and zoom appointments. Enough storage for me, was able to pull all my photos from networking sites to have them all in one space. A regular mouse won’t work with this computer and you will need a USB-C adapter for USB related things or if you need more ports. Battery life is very good and doesn’t take much time to charge. I recommend.

I prefer Androd and windows for user friendly capability. MacBook is not user-friendly. I would not buy again. I like my tablet much better for ease of useWhat I do like is the look and it is light weight, it starts up quickly.

Regret this purchase...

Very light, great battery life, does the job

I did all the troubleshooting and talked to Apple support for a good two hours trying to figure out the problem. I ended up returning it and replacing it. I haven’t had any trouble with this one. It’s shocking when an apple product is glitchy like that but I give Best Buy props for making a curbside exchange painless and hassle-free. Just really sad I got the silver because they were out of the space gray I originally bought.I would tell anyone who wants a Mac for normal use—documents, business apps, light video editing, streaming, listening to music, etc. not to worry about missing out on something by downgrading to air instead of pro. This does everything you need it to do, plenty of processing power, and so nice and lightweight, you’ll use it all the time. Love the new keyboard, typing is actually fun again. And fingerprint passwords are the thing I never knew I needed but note can’t live without. At $999, this is a no-brainer great buy.
