A great gadget with a slightly prissy remote

I often wonder whats up with the dorks at Apple. Their penchant for high design versus logic makes me wonder if they ever get a date. There is this beautiful remote that feels so comfortable in your hand, yet it has so few buttons. You can pair it with your sound bar and raise and lower the volume, but would it have been such an eyesore to include a mute button? apparently at Apple they dont believe in muting so theres no way to mute. Then theres the touchpad at the top. Its a high maintenance gadget like someone who barks orders at you in bed. You have to touch it just right. Not only does it work as a touchpad when you want to fast forward, if you also push that pause button at the same time, it has a click feature so theres like a button underneath it. So when you want to tell Netflix yes continue watching Offspring, you click that button. Except sometimes it moves, because its also a touchpad. And thats the thing, you sort of have to be schooled in how to use it. You need to practice, and get your touch just right. There are special ways that you have to touch something to make it do what you want to do. Another remote would just have another button- out in plain sight. You wouldnt have to go to the college of Apple. Then there is the way it organizes shows. I like the idea that it would display a collection of the shows that youre watching no matter from what app. Except it doesnt really do that. It shows some of them and eventually it learns when you click on GOT that it should open HBO instead of offering to take you to iTunes or some other app to purchase it. Some shows never make it to the list because its clogged up with things that it wants you to buy on iTunes. Thats the thing with Apple, high minded design and constant whoring. In terms of the picture it does a good job producing clean images and it streams perfectly. You can put it to sleep which I couldnt do with my old Roku. Of course you have to learn which button to push and then hold to get it to go to sleep because only two buttons do everything. Well thats a little bit untrue because it has volume buttons and the fast-forward button. It also has the speaker button and thats when youre supposed to talk your commands. Sort of reminds me of my dad who used to sit in his easy chair and say out loud Gosh a cup of coffee would be great right now. Then my mother would go and get it. So you push the Siri button and then you have to hold it down while speaking, and you say open Netflix. And it does it. But you cant say play Offspring on Netflix even though you watchOffspring every day. Itll do something crazy and take you to someplace you dont want to go. Its sort of difficult when you open the Amazon prime app because it doesnt seem to bring up your own list immediately and theres all sorts of convolutions to find it. One day I just gave up because it kept scooting me to some other destinations. I am old and I get cranky and I dont want to die stomping on a remote. Im happy with this gadget though. I would just prefer it were a little less prissy because then it would be thinking about what was good for me instead of making me get schooled in the ways of Apple. Ultimately its like every other Apple gadget, beautiful in design but too complicated in its simplicity. With a Mac computer there are 12 ways to do any one thing. Does that really make it easier or do you have to learn 11 more things than you should normally have to master?

This would have been easy if I had an iPhone to set it up. Using an android phone, the process was more complicated and time consuming. I didn't know my QLED LG TV did not have appleplay, which have allowed Siri to control my TV and receiver. Everything still functions well with more manual setups. I probably would have went with fire cube instead, but appletv is a good, but expensive product. Everything works great with the proper equipment.

While Ive not tried the Roku stick, I have tried the Amazon fire tv. There are several free tv apps and Ive always had a subscription for Apple TV so for me this thing rocks it has more storage than the fire tv and each app unlike the fire tv stick has their own environment. I have other Apple devices and this device just flows well. I even was able to set it up with my iPhone. I recently purchased the Apple TV 3 before the 4K version and with the AppStore added everything just is better!

Bad vendor.
1 January 2022

3rd party vendor(whisper buys) advertises as “new open box” and sends out a well used device. My remote has a chip taken out of the trackpad (pics included) when I called Walmart and had an email sent out the vendor tells me “we unfortunately do not have remotes on hand to send out we can refund $40 so you can go buy one” the remotes after looking it up online are selling for at the cheapest 54.99. Add in tax and I’m looking at at least seventy to replace the remote. This is not as advertised. With no fault to Walmart. Just bad advertising from a third party vendor.

Easy setup. Smooth function. Versatile in its operation.
29 January 2019

If someone uses other Apple products (iPhone, iPad, MacBook), this is a nice addition to that family. The nice feature of this model, over its predecessors, is that it allows you to enter your TV provider information once for any apps you decide you want (e.g. History channel, ESPN, Disney) rather than adding that information over and over again. The mirroring feature allows your screen on another Apple device (iPhone, iPad, MacBook) to be replicated on your television. The device is easy to use and functions smoothly. One word of caution concerns the remote for the 4K model: it functions well, but it quite fragile. It is not like the all-aluminum construction of the 3rd generation. If dropped on a hard surface, it will shatter (as the face of it is glass).

Great for Apple Customers
3 April 2019

I'm not a Apple person, but my wife is and she wanted to stream work out apps to our TV and many apps proved unreliable so I bought this. I picked the 4k option for future TVs. The nice part is that the remote works great and has a touch pad. It also allows us to use Amazon Prime, and Netflix so we can have firesticks in some rooms ant this in the room my wife wants to work out in and it allows full flexibility to watch our streaming shows. I bought the refurbished model. It had a few small scratches, but it sits under the TV out of sight basically so no problem for us. Every thing went well except the shipper did not tell us a signature would be necessary so I had to go to the post office to pick it up. Wish they would have let me know. Also it was not delivered ... MoreI'm not a Apple person, but my wife is and she wanted to stream work out apps to our TV and many apps proved unreliable so I bought this. Had to create account for apple (not an apple fan whatsoever but needed the device for spectrum cable). My wife actually had to create an account, it gave me to much grief. But overall very fast and responsive to apps as needed and able to use tv remote to control spectrum channels and it's features through the 3.1 HDMI or higher cable. So if needed for something like my situation or are an apple lover then I would sure to get it. This unit has 4k output for display a very sharp picture.

Great upgrade from an old model
4 January 2023

This is an upgrade from an earlier /original apple tv. I initially upgraded so as to get NBA TV for the kids but now can get all the free to air stations throughout it as well - which I can no longer throught= foxtel. It's well set out, easy to set up, and remote is chunkier and therefore sturdier (hopefully). I'm glad I upgraded as it has made accessing content and channels more central and easier to use.

Sales Assistant should know better!
10 January 2023

While it works well I wish the JB HiFi sales assistant had have explained that there was a wired option, rather than just providing a WiFi version. I have ethernet cabling through the house and the older Apple TV box was plugged into that infrastructure. I asked for a replacement box and was given the WiFi version with a simple explanation that the other option simply had greater storage capacity. No mention of anything else. Not impressed here.

Tricky WiFi set up but worth the hassle. Great upgrade!
11 February 2019

Now that it's up and running, we love it. Our only frustration came during the set-up when we had continued WiFi issues. At times the Apple TV would pick up the WiFi but most of the time wouldn't connect even after trying everything (restarting Apple TV, modem, router, resetting to factory, etc). It then wouldn't see the WiFi network or if it did, say it couldn't connect even when all other devices were connecting just fine. We almost sent it back until I came across an article on Google about going into your router settings and adding the Apple TV MAC address to the WPA permissions (just Google exactly that and you'll find step-by-step instructions). This was simple once we found the article and its worked perfectly ever since. It's just weird that we had to dig so ... MoreNow that it's up and running, we love it. It's just weird that we had to dig so much to figure this out when historically, Apple products have been extremely easy to set up. Nevertheless, it was worth hassle. The 4k picture is gorgeous. The voice-to-text remote is awesome. Also, once you get past the WiFi issue, set up was incredibly easy. You bluetooth connect your phone to the Apple TV and it basically clones it, including all of your log-ins (Netflix, iTunes, Hulu, etc.) Now, whenever my phone is near by, it automatically gives you the option to use the keyboard on your phone to type into the Apple TV if you don't want to get up to grab the remote. Long story short, if you're using an older gen Apple TV, this is definitely worth the upgrade.
