It can be amazing - itâs like being in the US with all these shows to choose from! Yet 3 things make it harder. First, it gobbles up so much data that after the first week I unplugged it and now donât know what to do with it. Second, many of the shows I âlikedâ ended up being outside of Apple, and therefore require further payment. Finally, you are meant to put it on âsleepâ but that turns my entire tv off, meaning I need to switch it on again to watch regular tv. If you are interested, Iâve read Apple may be putting out a new 2022 version shortly. All up, I think itâs a wonderful idea but Iâve stopped using it and for some it might be the same.

Definitely one of the best media streaming devices on the market. I've tried a few (chrome cast with Google TV, Amazon Fire Stick and Box), but Apple has them beat. The device is pretty intuitive (even more so if you're already familiar with the Apple ecosystem), looks fantastic and is quite small/unintrusive. The UI is simple and I really like the Control Panel function. Having all my recent watches across multiple services is incredibly convenient. Picture wise, it also looks quite nice even on an SDTV and HDTV (I connected the tv to the older tvs in our house out of curiosity). The only thing I've had an issue with is how sensitive the remote is, but I'm sure I'll pick it up in time.

It works well with a snappy interface and plenty of available apps. Probably the best of breed streaming box, but...If you donât game, save money & get the 32GB version. Extra memory offers no advantage for streaming or performance. The remote control is really good, especially the pseudo-jog wheel function and Siri voice integration. Itâs also not infrared from what I can tell so you donât need to point it accurately. It doesnât have any separate digital audio out which makes it less flexible with older HT amps like mine. Itâs all via a single HDMI out.Setup is ridiculously easy if you already have an iPhone; just hold it near the ATV and it sets up networking and account details magically!ATV+ is a bandwidth hog but it results in excellent quality ... MoreIt works well with a snappy interface and plenty of available apps. Though I have no idea how the seller ended-up with 2 different generation remotes for this Apple-TV, I was pleased to see I could get either remotes to work without issue. It helps that this Apple's line of product has adopted a fairly consistent configuration process since its infancy. I was already using the gen 3 (which this one replaced) and the gen 4 Apple TV models, so I was already familiar with its operation. The Gen 3 model wouldn't allow me to add/install new apps such as Crave. I went with this 5th gen model rather than the 4th gen like I already had in anticipation of starting using 4K streaming. My only disappointment in the product line is the disappearance of the audio optical hookup/coupling (present on models prior to gen 4) I enjoyed using with my home theatre amplifier setup - the reason I was still keeping on using the gen 3 model to begin with. To my ear, having the audio fed over the HDMI hookup, has diminished the sound quality of the playback. That said, I do know that most people, my wife included, wouldn't readily recognize the difference. I have started to appreciate the ability to pair AirPods to the Apple-TV (really started at the gen 4 model), and the voice control capability (of the gen 6 remote) I did not have before. The voice control simplifies doing searches immensely. AirPlay, allowing to broadcast sessions from various external devices, does seem to be operating more reliably on this gen 5 model. There are more features I have yet to discover, but thus far, I am pleased with my decision to adopt this gen 5 Apple-TV.
Pros*Easy to set up - pair it with your apple device and thatll do all the work for you*Load up all your streaming apps and photos and music and podcasts and whatever else as a one stop shop to run through your tv and entertainment system*Central Park is so much more fun on a full sized tv screen instead of just the iPad. Much less weird to dance and sing along with.*Very kid friendly but also boomer friendly - my kid and my mum have both got this thing figured out*Theres a bunch of these super fun little arcade games too that my kid has put on here somehowCons*The box doesnt come with a manual, it just tells you where the online manual is, but that online manual isnt particularly user friendly, so pairing for set-up is a must. Or Im just an idiot. Probably the latter, but maybe both.*If you have a habitually hovering thumb on your remote hand its probably going to inadvertently select something and send you down a rabbit hole that you need a ten year old to dig you out of.*Some of us just should not have our photos on a 50inch screen - we know who we are - so maybe dont opt to pair your iCloud and youll avoid that unnecessary unpleasantness.*Your entire music catalogue is now on the tv for everyone to see. Be ready for that judgement and to defend REAL music against whatever that noise is they try to pass off as music on the tiktok and whatnot
I bought this as an upgrade to another streaming device I bought for ÂŁ30. I honestly donât know where to start with this device. Firstly Siri only brings up its own content and stuff from a few other services. Although the device supports Netflix, Disney+ and Prime apps, Siri does not show content from these apps only itâs own content and a few other lesser known apps. This is very disappointing as other, cheaper mainstream devices offer cross service voice search functionality. Considering the price of the device this is a a big disappointment. Also streaming video from phone and iPad is glitchy at best ( I have a top of the range Wi-Fi router) and also the remote doesnât work with my TV even though it supports the hdmi protocol that is needed to make it work. If you want a really restricted experience that is designed to push you to apple content then this device is for you. Otherwise I would strongly urge you to save your money.
After coming from Android TV powered units and Samsung's propriety OS media player, the Apple TV is so much better. Smooth operation with no lag, quick & easy setup, fantastic picture quality and an awesome remote, the Apple TV is very close to being the perfect media streamer. Also, the Apple TV works very closely with other Apple devices (even though you don't have to), to enhance the player's functionality immensely. The only negatives would be the lack of a USB port to connect local media to and Apple refusing to allow the very popular Kodi app to be installed (but Plex fills that hole nicely). Also, as the remote control battery is sealed within the unit, once it finally dies (which is inevitable one day), a new remote control purchase will be required unless ... MoreAfter coming from Android TV powered units and Samsung's propriety OS media player, the Apple TV is so much better. Apple TV is extremely useful for those without a smart TV. You will need an apple ID, wi-fi and HDMI cable 2.0 to connect and you will be able to download all your favourite apps to view (with subscription) from the Apple TV. The picture quality is always impressive, providing screen savers and auto-shutdown options if you happen to fall asleep on your couch. Apple TV plus is Apple's own channel like Prime or Netflix and it requires a subscription but it isn't too expensive. The shows they deliver are mostly very good, there are not thousands but what is given is quality acting and directing. You can also buy and rent shows through Apple TV. You can also download Netflix and Prime Video (Amazon Subscription) apps.
Pros: - Weâve owned every generation of Apple TV, all still working and still in use. This is an incremental but important evolution with some vital improvements. A must-have upgrade if already immersed in the Apple eco system.- eARC at last on Apple TV! Finally all audio from all devices (live TV, TV apps, PS5, etc.) can be returned by hdmi in Atmos quality and sent to stereo paired HomePods. Weâve just disposed of a massive black-box amplifier, 7 speakers, a subwoofer and miles of wiring. Living room looks huge again!- new Siri remote is a joy to use and resolves many issues with the old one.- effortlessly operable from any other apple device in the house, even Apple watches, with the remote-app baked-in to the new iOS.- works perfectly as a hub for Apple HomeKit. ... MorePros: - Weâve owned every generation of Apple TV, all still working and still in use. When paired with HomePods and HomeKit equipment, enables us to manage all of our lighting, heating, music and even coffee machine via Siri commands and shortcuts.Cons: - the new 120hz frame rate capability is currently of limited use as thereâs virtually no content available- still expensive for a streaming box when considering the competition- external design indistinguishable from previous models and a bit boring for an âexcitingâ new Apple product. Awesome colour range across all other Apple devices. Apple TVs are often on clear display in the main room of the house just below the main focal point so probably get looked at a lot. Who decorates their living room in black? Why does Apple TV only come as a featureless black box?
I bought this HD 32GB 2nd Gen Apple TV to solve a problem I was experiencing with my newly purchased TCL 4K Roku smart tv. The TV has Apple TV on the remote and the Apple App is pre-loaded on the Roku tv. BUT...it kept giving an error message. No amount of YouTube fixes or tv reseting could make it work. SO...I saw this device on sale and decided to try it. It arrived perfectly packaged, brand new, with remote control and power cord included. I had to buy the HTML cord separately and you WILL need that to attach to your smart TV. Buy it when you order this device and you'll be set. Anyhoo...I plugged it in, attached it via the html cord to my html 1 output on the tv and it immediately started up. Anyhoo...I plugged it in, attached it via the html cord to my html 1 output on the tv and it immediately started up. It took me through all the hoops apple makes you jump through upon set up, but in the end guess what? IT WORKED! WOOHOO! I was concerned it might not for two reasons. 1) My new ROKU TCL 4k smart tv seemed to have a vendetta against apple tv (even though it was build in!) and 2) my new tv is 4k and this unit is only HD 32GB 2nd Gen Apple TV. I read all the reviews to see if anyone had problems with these techs being incompatible but no one had mentioned it? So fingers were crossed. In the end, there was nothing to worry about. I can watch all my shows on Apple TV again! Now, if you are a gamer or use the unit in some more demanding fashion I can not vouch for its responsiveness on a 4k tv. I just need my Morning Show and Ted Lasso fix. But for those fighting the frustrating fight with a smart tv that won't load Apple TV...this seems to be a real fix. I got it on Black Friday sale for about $60. But I'd pay the $100 or whatever it is to get this unit. My stress levels are down and my home entertainment is back up! It's a nice unit.
