I was using a aquaclear 20 to filter my 20gl high, and it just wasn't getting the job done. So I decided to go up in models, and choose the aquaclear 70 over the 30 or 50 models. Boy was that a decision I'll never regret. It's doing exactly what I thought my aquaclear 20 was going to do, but the aquaclear 20 just wasn't capable to handle a 20gl tank. They rated it for a 20gl tank, but it's more suited for a much smaller tank. Mind you I just had it running on a empty tank, no inhabitants and it was still struggling to maintain the tank. The aquaclear 70 is bigger and moving much more water than the aquaclear 20, so now I'm pleased with the results. I'v been using aquaclear for use, and I'm a devoted customer. This isn’t necessarily a review for the filter since I love AQ filters! This was actually a second AQ70 I bought for my tank for extra filtration. I brought it home, set it up, and primed it with water. Unfortunately, there was a crack in the main housing right above the impeller motor on the back side, which I didn’t notice until most of the water from the priming was all over the stand/floor.Moral of the story: Be sure to closely inspect your filter before filling with water. The dark plastic makes it hard to see cracks and there’s no telling who dropped it before you bought it.Again, I love AQ filters and have had no problems with my previous one, or the one I exchanged for the cracked one.

I’ve used this for about 4 months on my 40gal freshwater. I had to return and replace when I first purchased because the first one I got made crazy noise. Turns out, the small fan in the filter just needs to be pressed into place every now and then. It seems to slightly lift out of place when I clean the filter. Just unplug the filter and press down on that small white fan and it works just fine and quietly!

I just set up a 55 gallon and bought this filter for it. I had great luck with the Aquaclear 50 on my 29, so I figured it would be good. The first one I got was clearly garbage. It was loud, and had trouble making a seal to get the water flowing fully. Upon inspection it turned out the impeller was slightly bent which caused it to slightly rub on the motor housing; hence the noise. It wouldn't seal because the small grey plate that goes in between the motor and the tubing did not fit fully in to the groove, leaving a bit of room. I exchanged it for an other one and this one is exactly what I was expecting. Great flow, quite, no issues after a month and no reason to think I'll have any. I don't know if I just got a lemon, or if the qc is bad, but I'd recommend this ... MoreI just set up a 55 gallon and bought this filter for it. I recently bought the AquaClear 70 for my 44 gallon saltwater tank. I downsized from a 60 gal tank with sump to the 44 gal tank, no sump, a Vortech MP10 powerhead for circulation and the AquaClear 70. I have a fish-only with live rock setup, so this combination provides plenty of filtration and circulation. Maintenance is so much easier now, and since the pump is not in the water there is no heat transfer. My tank temperature is the same as the room temperature, which helps keep the tank from getting too warm in the summer. I like the ease of doing filter changes and the fact you don't throw away the good bacteria in the biological filter material. You only change the carbon insert. It's a very good design.
I wanted a different filter on my 10 gallon tank. The one I was using made noise and the flow was not adjustable. I had always used filters with a single packet of carbon and filter material. Easy to change, plus the "friendly bacteria" unit never needed changing. This one uses three different holders, all three need to be changed at different monthly intervals. It is very quiet and seems to be doing a good job. Easy to adjust flow rate. 5 stars...so far.
I have been using the AquaClear system since long before Fluval or Hagen ever bought them out and would not consider any other brand power filter. the other so called filters are appealing because they are easy to replace the filter media but in reality they are no good for your fish. First of all you would have to change the filter media every week in order to keep your water clean and then with only a tablespoon full of Activated carbon it is not enough to filter a gallon of water. with the AquaClear you get a real foam filter sponge that has the capacity to hold a months worth of debris and a full cup of Activated Carbon to keep your water crystal clear for weeks and with the Bio Max biological filtration your parameters will stay stable.
This filter is really good at making the water crystal clear. I have a 40-gallon for about a year now. I started with an Oase 250 canister filter, and that one did a pretty good job but was really hard to clean and had a bunch of problems so I got rid of it. Then I put on a Seachem Tidal 55, and set it up like they had it - a sponge and bio media. The water was full of algae and had a lot of particles in it. I tried doubling up the sponge and putting in some carbon, and that took away the green tint from the water and removed a lot of particles. However, the reset button indicating the filter needs to be cleaned would pop up after only a few days. I then put on this filter, and the water was so much cleaner - I didn't realize how dirty and full of algae it was until ... MoreThis filter is really good at making the water crystal clear. The water has dramatically less particles and is a very clean, no tint water. It sort of sparkles. The plants look so much healthier, especially the java fern. Also I am cleaning the filter only once in about two weeks and it's fine. This filter has a really large sponge, a bag of carbon, and bio-media. It works very well and is my go-to filter because it does an excellent job.
Having aquariums for over 30 years and this was for my 75 gallon Oceanic Tank which I bought back in the 1980s and has been in use most of the time since. I have an AquaClear Power Filter from back then that has been in use most of the time and still works as well. So this is one reason I wanted this because it lasts. Also these are the most quiet Power Filters so you can enjoy the most wonderful sound of running water. So even with no fish the sound of running water is very peaceful and relaxing. Many other Power Filters over the years have a grinding noise or other motor noise besides the sound of running water. These filters that I now have had running for a couple months are just as quiet as the one I have had since the 1980s. These filters that I now have had running for a couple months are just as quiet as the one I have had since the 1980s. It is the same size as these as well. I have a 60 gallon and want to buy more of these. In these large tanks I like to run two of these on each tank. One interesting thing beside the sound of a waterfall is that in the Summer these tanks keep the area they are 10 degrees cooler in the Summer than other areas so a sort of natural air conditioning as well as adding much needed moisture during the Winter to my living space.
My Goldfish tank had cloudy water since pretty much ever. I had one of those cartridge media type filters but it wasn't designed to be efficient enough to remove the amount of debris the Goldfish were putting out. And the pump motor rattled all the time! Annoying! This unit is designed so the filter media fits tightly into the base. Minimal bypass. Easy to service in the future, and replacement media appears to be affordable. In 2 weeks my water is sparkling. I had forgotten how good it looked. I had forgotten about the background scenery I put on the back of the tank, it had been so long since I had seen it, LOL!! And it's so quiet the only noise I hear is from the air stones now!
