Arboretum

Arboretum invites you into a serene world of strategic beauty, where 2 to 4 players, aged 10 and up, can immerse themselves in a delightful blend of set collection, tile-laying, and hand management—all within just 25 minutes! In this captivating game, you'll strive to create stunning garden paths that captivate your visitors and earn you the most points by the end. The vibrant deck features 80 intricately designed cards, representing ten different colors, each showcasing a unique species of tree. Each color contains numbered cards from 1 to 8, with the number of colors in play determined by the number of participants. At the game’s start, each player receives a hand of seven cards. On your turn, you will draw two cards—either from the deck or the discard piles—lay a card to enhance your arboretum, and then strategically discard another to your personal pile. As the game progresses and the deck runs out, tension builds as players reveal their remaining cards. Scoring is determined by evaluating which player holds the highest value of cards for each color. Players can score for paths of trees in their arboretum that begin and end with the same color, creating an orthogonally adjacent chain of increasing values. Each card in a scoring path earns one point, while a path constructed entirely of that color grants two points per card! If your hand doesn’t hold the highest value for a particular color, you’ll score zero points for that path. The competition is fierce, but in the end, only one player can claim victory by achieving the most points. Will your strategy blossom into a winning arboretum? Discover the engaging challenge of Arboretum and pave your way to victory today!

This game has a similar feel to the old card games like Canasta, but with a fun new twist. The game is not too long and very clever. You try and get runs of trees, but you cannot score them unless you have the highest score of them still in your hand. Really enjoyed it.

A game that at first glance seems very simple - but beneath that layer is a surprisingly rich combination of turn-to-turn tactics and overarching strategy. This will be one that gets better with replays!

A really nice game

This is a pretty simple game to pick up (check out the online instructions, they are very helpful) while also having a delightful level of complexity in terms of strategy to play, making it a rewarding and serene way to spend a half hour or so.This is not a barrel of laughs edge of seat kind of game, but my 6 and 9 year olds enjoy it just as much as my mum in her 70s and the artwork is a constant delight.

It is not as good as I hoped. Not as much fun as it should be. Great art and a high quality product, but somehow lacking.

Good fun playing with girlfriend, we don’t really play games and was a good first one! Played 7 games over 2 days. I lost :-(

Awesome game

I'm surprised this game has not won more awards. It is very well developed, elegantly simple but involving a great deal of strategy with infinite possible outcomes and often surprising endings. It is also has beautiful artwork so it is aesthetically very pleasing to play. I give it a 10 out of 10.

A very simple game rules-wise for what you do on your turn that underplays the subtle strategies involved in the game. It does have a slightly muddy scoring system that takes a playthrough to really understand its implications. After our first game, we were compelled to play again straight away, and have played it 10 times in 10 days at all possible player counts. The way cards can be played, or saved to ensure you can score played cards is fresh and unique. Every turn is torturous, particularly deciding what to throw away, but it's that good torturous which tight, well executed games have. There's a bit of bluff, and many chances to be quite clever despite the anguishing decisions. If you don't like games that require you to do a bit of simple card counting, you won't like this, especially at 2 players. But it's a good, solid "thinky filler" to quote Heavy Cardboard. Despite its simplicity, I don't see it getting boring any time soon.Only 4 stars though, because, to be honest at this price point, I expected better card stock. It is literally the same card stock as a normal deck of cards that you might get from a book store and there isn't anything else in the box apart from the (clear and concise) rule book.

Fab game and super quick shipping
5 January 2021

Arboretum came heavily recommended to me by a couple of friends so I jumped at the chance to purchase it as a very last minute christmas present for my partner. The shipping was super fast - i ordered on the Sunday night before Christmas and it arrived on Tuesday - so i was pleasantly surprised from that point of view. The game itself is fairly easy to get going with and an interesting play once you get the hang! Very good for two players and easy to transport about.

Great small card game.
17 February 2019

This is a very easy to set up and simple to learn card game that hides a lot of depth behind its beautiful art. Each turn you will draw 2 cards then play one into your arboretum and discard another from your hand in an attempt to score points based on the positioning of your trees. The problems comes that each type of tree will only be scored by one player based upon the value of that tree you retain in your hand. The strategy you use differs at different player counts as with 2 players you know what your opponent has at the end as all the cards will be used each game whereas in 3 and 4 players the cards will be split between the others so can you risk keeping a lower total of the trees you wish to score?
