I have now had this jacket for a few months and it's become my most worn article of clothing. AR is literal in this sense. It is light, very well engineered, and is simple yet sophisticated with its looks. I had tested the Beta and Beta LT in store to get an idea of the sizing and can confirm this jacket is a bit "baggier" than the other two which are more formfitting. Is that a bad thing? No, I've noticed the benefits this fall as the ability to layer underneath has been such a welcome! My favorite part of this jacket? Feeling invincible as you trek through rain. I've gone on bike rides, hikes, and walks to the supermarket and water has had no chance of getting me wet when I get caught in it. Pit zips are far more used than I thought and really help with cooling ... MoreI have now had this jacket for a few months and it's become my most worn article of clothing. I bought this after years of drooling over it and it did not disappoint. I wondered why a shell could be so expensive but after wearing it , the old adage â you pay for what you getâ rang true. My first experience using it was on a day at Silverstar. It was blowing , wet and foggy - not ideal. We were getting soaked riding up the chair all day. That said, I remained dry underneath and never chilled. I paired it with the cerium and it was a nice combo - warm but no bulk. The rest of the week offered completely different conditions- glorious sunshine. The jacket was great in that too with its ventilation . I removed the cerium and with an only a base layer, the jacket was just fine. Iâm 5â2, fairly athletic build and found a small fit nicely. Canât complain about the Beta AR. I have it in a blue - looks good with black pants. Overall very versatile and stylish

This jacket is bomb-proof and I would highly recommend it for anyone hard on their gear or pursuing alpine objectives where you need the absolute best. This jacket is a tool to be utilized, and that's the best way to think about it. It's sized larger--so you can layer effectively. The hood is sized to fit a helmet--you'll need to cinch it down (a lot) if you're going without one. The material is 100% bomb proof--this means it's heavier, burlier, "louder" and designed to withstand all you could throw at it in the mountains. You need to ask yourself what you're planning on doing with this jacket. If it's just so you can have a nice rain shell, look at the other Beta jackets ArcTeryx offers. This is a jacket built to serve a serious purpose--not a jack-of-all-trades ... MoreThis jacket is bomb-proof and I would highly recommend it for anyone hard on their gear or pursuing alpine objectives where you need the absolute best. ReviewI bought this in Late 2019 as my first Arc shell jacket. First gore-tex product I've owned. It truly works, rain, snow, freezing rain, etc. Mostly hiking, but also activities like snowboarding, skiing, ice skating, cycling, etc. I live in Toronto so the climate is variable and ranges from 30+C to -20C plus windchill. I'll never forget about that day of freezing rain, and a layer of ice formed on my jacket that I could simply slide off like eggs in a teflon pan. I also travel to the rockies and I primarily used this jacket in the rain in my motorcycle, and it kept me really dry.Until it didn't.I maintain the jacket pretty regularly by washing and drying every so often. I spray DWR once a season, etc.At some point I started realizing that the coat wasn't ... MoreReviewI bought this in Late 2019 as my first Arc shell jacket. First gore-tex product I've owned. I spray DWR once a season, etc.At some point I started realizing that the coat wasn't keeping me dry anymore. By that point I noticed that the entire inner jacket membrane from my sleeves to my back had completely separated. I'm pretty sure my jacket was a dud. I issued a request for warranty, and they gave me a voucher for the value of the jacket during the time that I bought it. Great. Customer service rocks. And it opened up a whole can of worms for me.After experiencing the Beta AR as my everything jacket, I've come out with the mindset that if you're doing a wide range of activities like I have, you should not buy this jacket (contrary to what Arcâteryx and forums suggests). I hope this provides insight on whoever is deciding on getting their first "all around" jacket from Arc'Teryx that it is simply not great at everything (and to be fair that's kinda the point of this jacket by ArcâTeryx). It's a compromise for basically every activity you may end up doing. When it's warmer outside, you may sweat more than the rain pours, because the jacket is not that breathable. That will likely lead to further damage. And in the winter, I long for something more robust with more snow appropriate features, as snow can get into your jacket from underneath (and into your pants!)That's why I will buy 2 (and maybe you should too, if you can):- The Beta LT (or Beta) for hiking, city, motorcycling, cycling, short periods of climbing, etc. I hope that this gives a bit more breathability so I'm not sweating up a storm in a storm on the highway on my motorcycle.- Rush/Sabre Jacket for snow sports, skiing, snowboarding, backcountry, snow shoeing etc.God forbid I end up picking up an ice climbing hobby. Then Iâll really be hurting.
I live in the UK , a MLTB Mountain Leader, and have a BetaAR jacket. It is less than 4 years old and in reality has been used very little, and when stored, out of sunlight etc. It still looks like new, except...The issue is the top of the hood has delaminated.I have looked online and it seems others have had the same problem and when they send it to the European customer service centre, it seems to stay with them for a number of weeks, before the answer comes back there is nothing they can do.So, forewarned is forearmed, it is an expensive jacket. If you are lucky and you don't have any problems, it will be great. If not, then you could be looking at having to purchase a new one sooner than you think.I'm afraid I can't recommend the jacket as there appear to ... MoreI live in the UK , a MLTB Mountain Leader, and have a BetaAR jacket. First, I will say that that the fit and color are great. While functional for a time, the jacket is however not durable or made to last. At all. Within just a couple years of spending almost $600 for the jacket, it started delaminating in small areas. Despite what I would describe as normal/intended use (several backpacking and ski trips along with some casual wear for rain/snow) and washing it with Nickwax Techwash, the jacket continued to fall apart. After 5 years, multiple areas of interior seam tape were literally hanging inside, so I sent it in for repair. I was told it was beyond its âpractical lifespanâ and therefore could not be repaired, and I was offered a gift card at 20% of its retail toward another item. I was told it was beyond its âpractical lifespanâ and therefore could not be repaired, and I was offered a gift card at 20% of its retail toward another item. When asked whether this is to be reasonably expected from such a supposedly high end piece of gear that cost nearly $600, I was told that itâs deterioration was due to âcontaminationâ(??), presumably from normal wear and extended exposure to body sweat and therefore the fault of the customer for not cleaning it enough. This is very disappointing and frankly insulting. After reading comments here and elsewhere, it seems Arcâteryx is aware of the flaws in this 3 layer laminate technology and instead of taking greater ownership and standing by their very expensive and supposedly high end products, they have instead chosen to push the issue off on customers.Poor quality. Avoid.
First about the reviewer: I won't give 5 stars unless the product was both amazing in quality as proved in use and amazing in pricing at the same time. So three stars is not a bad review on my scale. I just spent the last couple of days wearing the garment out in rain while in the city. Temperature was in the 50's and rain was light to moderate, with occasional stronger showers. I was never in a downpour with the jacket, but there were windy times when the rain was moderate but coming sideways, straight at the front. On that occasion I didn'thave on rain pants and my bottom half was completely soaked, so I had a comparison of how well the jacket worked compared to no jacket, but that's not a very demanding test (I was drenched from the bottom of the jacket down). ... MoreFirst about the reviewer: I won't give 5 stars unless the product was both amazing in quality as proved in use and amazing in pricing at the same time. The zipper did not leak. I've seen leakage from other allegedly waterproof zippers. Like most other garments of this type, it did allow moisture to build up inside when I perspired from more vigorous exercise; I wasn't out under the right kind of conditions to find out if it would allow me to dry out from the inside as other breathable jackets have done for me on day hikes. I had pit zippers open most of the time but zipped up when wind was blowing rain into the openings. Hood adjustments worked the way they're supposed to, and after being out for an hour or more I came home quite dry inside the jacket. I had things in the pockets that also stayed dry with the zippers up all the way. The hood adjustments and sleeve Velcro adjustments worked fine and are what you would expect on a garment of this type in this price range.I previously had a much less expensive outer layer purchased several years ago that leaked around the zipper, which wasn't waterproof but covered by a Velcro'd flap. So for the considerably higher outlay in cash, I would expect quality performance as far as keeping me dry. The fit and feel seem like a quality garment, but it's basically brand new and I have no idea how it will age. I bought an extra-large as I like to have room inside for a lot of layers should the need arise and also to give the jacket room to flap around for ventilation if only wearing with one layer under, as I did earlier today. That works OK for me for my purposes.
This is my third Beta AR in around twenty years. It's the only storm shell I use. The one I've had for the last ten years was getting pretty worn and I've been using it while riding my Triumph, which incurred the wrath of bugs and chain lube. I decided to get a new one and keep the old one for just riding.I like all the updated features, like being a bit longer, which now completely covers my main insulation layer. The sleeves are also a bit longer and I can pull my hands in if I don't need gloves, but don't want them exposed. The collar, which is one reason I didn't go with the Alpha SV, is one of my favorite features and is now a bit closer to the chin and maybe even a bit taller. Some reviews say it doesn't breathe as well as other shells, but if I'm sweating ... MoreThis is my third Beta AR in around twenty years. I like this color, which isn't current, since I have a lot of black and want a light color for b/c partners to be able to keep track of me easily. I also have a lot of blue, dark green, and brown/autumn colors, which all go with it. The only bright current color is red and I'm not big on red. So glad to have found this one.
I got this jacket as a warranty replacement to my jacket I bought in 2009. My old one lasted about ten years and only had a neck seam issue. It beaded water just fine and I loved it. The replacement was extremely disappointing and I didn't even want to wear it much. It got soaked through quickly and the seams fell apart way faster than my original. I didn't use it for strenuous activities and it wasn't even my daily jacket because I bought one that performed significantly better. Sad to say that Arc'Teryx build quaility went downhill a lot in the last ten years. If you have an older Arc'teryx jacket (when they were made in Canada or even up to late 2000s) I'd recommend doing the seam repairs on your own and don't replace it via the warranty. I heard that the waterproofing materials all companies use now are more environmentally friendly, which is good, but don't expect $600 of performance out of this particular product.
The first thing that struck me about the Beta AR was its sleek and minimalistic design. Arc'teryx has managed to strike a perfect balance between form and function.
