Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket Men's Jacket Black

Made of waterproof, breathable and windproof fabric, the Arc'teryx Beta AR men's hiking hooded jacket is the do everything garment created to deliver performance versatility in mountain environments. This highly versatile multipurpose non-insulated shell with hybrid construction offers full protection for diverse activities in alpine conditions. It offers a regular fit that accommodates comfortably an under layer and a hood with an internal collar for more comfort in storms, climbing, skiing or simply enjoying the outdoors. This outer layer is famous for its remarkable performances across a wide range of activities: this is The Dynamo of the Beta family. Layering is the key of keeping you dry, warm and using your energy efficiently. Put into the right systems, a good sequence of layers moves moisture away from your skin, conserves or dissipates heat and provides you with weather protection. Here they are. The first layer, worn next-to-skin will provide warmth and quickly move moisture away from your skin. Then, the second layer, is the insulation and fleece, that provides warmth while also dissipating heat during periods of high output. And finally, the third layer, the shell, which is the most weather-protective layer, worn on the outside of all other layers.

Best Arc'teryx Beta Jacket (Get this one)

If you are confused about which Arc'teryx Beta to get since there are so many options:- Arc'teryx Beta SV- Arc'teryx Beta AR- Arc'teryx Beta LT Hadron- Arc'teryx Beta LT- Arc'teryx BetaThis jacket is the best option because both SV and AR are too stiff and heavy (good for extreme weather, but too heavy/warm for all other weather) and other editions do not have arm pit zipper. Trust me, you will want that arm pit zipper. One bad thing is Arc'teryx do not provide a lot of color options on purpose. They do rotate the colors, but it may take few years for your color to appear. They are not insulated, but they do keep you warm in cooler weather.

Definitely waterproof

One thing to note is that the Jacket description is mislabeled. This is not a "Soft Shell" jacket, rather it's a "shell". Big difference in the material and Sail needs to change it.Having said that, I love this Gore-tex waterproof jacket. It's perfect for the rainy weather that we get in Vancouver. It feels great, lots of room to move, is definitely waterproof and looks really sharp. I've tried multiple other Arcteryx shell jackets, and I found them to be too bulky, non fitting, so this Beta LT has been my favorite by far.A couple of things to consider. This new Beta LT version seems lighter and the material feels less thick than the same version I bought 3 years ago. Just an observation, no actual evidence of that. The Beta LT seems to fit much tighter around ... MoreOne thing to note is that the Jacket description is mislabeled. This is not a "Soft Shell" jacket, rather it's a "shell". It was a difficult moment deciding to buy this jacket at the high price and I felt uneasy about it for days. A rain shell at 600. However, I’m glad I did now and here’s my thoughts on why.1 - super well made. This isn’t going to get ripped easily like some of the lightweight options and thus is going to last a long time (I’m almost positive). The sleeves are long and I thought that was odd when I tried it on - but I realize now it’s designed that way as they expect you to Velcro fit the sleeves to your wrist size (ish) making for a perfect fit and the crumpling above looks good. It’s a very stylish jacket actually.2. Pockets are big and in just the right height - they aren’t lined but they keep your hands totally wind protected and warm. I don’t find this jacket noisy. Yes it’s got a bit of a crinkle to it when you hold it brand new but once on I was not bothered by noise and it definitely softens up (in a good way). It’s utterly impregnable to water. If you have this on you’re not getting wet up top.4. It is warm but not as much of a sweat lodge as the reviews led me to believe. I’m currently wearing it in Wales, UK, and it’s 50F (about 10c), often windy and wet, and I have not found it sweaty or been overheating during hikes - even on good days.I am layering it with a tshirt, a wool crew sweater, an arcteryx proton jacket (with hood) - by all accounts I should be boiling - but I’m not. I’m warm. If I want to cool simply unzip the front or the arm vents a bit. Remove a layer etc. I realize other people may exert themselves more than me or run hotter/cooler - but it is def not a toaster and has lots of means to adjust.5. The collar is great. When wind is blasting in your face it’s great to be able to zip that up and hide behind it.6. The hood is fantastic and has great adjustments to cling to your head well so it’s not blowing around. The fact that it fits a bike helmet is fantastic. But with just your head it’s still great. My verdict is that this jacket is ideal for northern climates. Obviously it’s not great for trekking a rainy day in California or Mexico (Although I did wear it in Idyllwild CA in October and was fine on a 2 hr hike) - this jacket is for rainy cold days with a bit of bite. I’d rather have more protection that I can step down with layers than something more flimsy. Paired with some waterproof pants and boots you are totally sorted.Size wise I got a large because I like a more casual fit - I’m 5’11, 170 - fairly regular - medium fit me but the large has more versatility. A great city jacket also! Very stylish in the darker colors. I’m not a rock climber or pro adventurer. Day hikes and a few hour long walks with the dog. I love this jacket and I’d recommend it to anyone for wet weather in temps below/around 60f.

Good and light waterproof jacket

I like the inner feeling of the jacket. It doesn't have a liner, but definitely doesn't feel all-plastic like other jackets do. It just feels smooth and non-sticky.The location of the front pockets is very good. Out of the way of packs' hip belts, but not too high and centered. It is just great and I enjoyed it. The only pocket I didn't like is the inner one. I can barely fit my phone in there. I use inner pockets solely to keep electronics warm, so with this size I cannot use it.It has very long sleeves. Usually my jackets fit me on a bit of a short side when it comes to sleeves. With this jacket I actually had the opposite problem, they're a bit too long. With this jacket I actually had the opposite problem, they're a bit too long. I took the jacket crag-climbing and thought that the sleeves could be an advantage in rainy climbs as it would still protect you, even when grabbing on higher hand holds. The hood has a smaller size than other jackets, but it was still big enough to fit my helmet (Mammut Wall Rider - Large). This worked really well and was very comfortable. The jacket is breathable, but I definitely not the most breathable one. I took it running a few times and I ended up soaked whereas with my usual running jacket breathes better. However I think that considering the amount of water protection it offers, then the breathability it has is good enough.I REALLY wish this jacket had some armpit zippers. I took it on a couple mountain scrambles and we had our fair share of snow and wind. It is very good at protecting both from wind and snow! However I still was working hard and wanted to ventilate. I believe zip vents would make jacket much more versatile.I like that it is hip length. Some other jackets are shorter and allow some drafts to get in.Noise wise, of course it is not a quiet jacket. It is waterproof and I don't think noise is going to go away anytime soon. With this in mind, it is the quietest rain shell I've had. At least from those that offer good protection from the elements.Fit-wise I think it fits just right, except for the sleeves.

Great Jacket Runs Small
5 December 2022

I purchased this shell primarily because of the color (Tatsu). I don't like to stick out in a crowd with bright colors and am tired of black. I am ex military and like olive, green, subdued brown etc. I am 5 feet 9.5 inches tall, wear a size 33 waist 30 inseam jean (actual waist is 37, hips 39). I wear arc'teryx medium in fleece and soft-shells. Over a fleece, a size medium just barely fits me. I called Arc'Teryx before ordering and explained my size situation and was told that a size M would fit over a Cerium down jacket. Impossible! Regardless, this jacket runs small. I am going to try a large but I am guessing it may also be too small. I wear a Patagonia medium in everything without any layering problems.

Inner lining wore thru quickly
9 September 2022

Did the job on the outside but wore out fast on the inside. I used this jacket for one rainy season here in the NW for the simplest of tasks. When I inspected it at the end of the summer, I noticed that the inner lining had worn off where my belt loops brushed against the lining. The jacket fits well with enough room for me to have an under layer but the lining wore away just by walking. Not what I would expect from a brand known for its durable outerwear. In contacting Arcteryx support they would not cover the jacket under warranty that was less than a year old. Luckily, I purchased it from REI and they took care of me with one look at the problem. I didn't have to explain a thing.

Keeps the rain out

First about the reviewer: I won't give 5 stars unless the product was both amazing in quality as proved in use and amazing in pricing at the same time. So three stars is not a bad review on my scale. I just spent the last couple of days wearing the garment out in rain while in the city. Temperature was in the 50's and rain was light to moderate, with occasional stronger showers. I was never in a downpour with the jacket, but there were windy times when the rain was moderate but coming sideways, straight at the front. On that occasion I didn'thave on rain pants and my bottom half was completely soaked, so I had a comparison of how well the jacket worked compared to no jacket, but that's not a very demanding test (I was drenched from the bottom of the jacket down). ... MoreFirst about the reviewer: I won't give 5 stars unless the product was both amazing in quality as proved in use and amazing in pricing at the same time. On that occasion I didn'thave on rain pants and my bottom half was completely soaked, so I had a comparison of how well the jacket worked compared to no jacket, but that's not a very demanding test (I was drenched from the bottom of the jacket down). The zipper did not leak. I've seen leakage from other allegedly waterproof zippers. Like most other garments of this type, it did allow moisture to build up inside when I perspired from more vigorous exercise; I wasn't out under the right kind of conditions to find out if it would allow me to dry out from the inside as other breathable jackets have done for me on day hikes. I had pit zippers open most of the time but zipped up when wind was blowing rain into the openings. Hood adjustments worked the way they're supposed to, and after being out for an hour or more I came home quite dry inside the jacket. I had things in the pockets that also stayed dry with the zippers up all the way. The hood adjustments and sleeve Velcro adjustments worked fine and are what you would expect on a garment of this type in this price range.I previously had a much less expensive outer layer purchased several years ago that leaked around the zipper, which wasn't waterproof but covered by a Velcro'd flap. So for the considerably higher outlay in cash, I would expect quality performance as far as keeping me dry. The fit and feel seem like a quality garment, but it's basically brand new and I have no idea how it will age. I bought an extra-large as I like to have room inside for a lot of layers should the need arise and also to give the jacket room to flap around for ventilation if only wearing with one layer under, as I did earlier today. That works OK for me for my purposes.

My Favorite Shell
31 March 2023

This is my third Beta AR in around twenty years. It's the only storm shell I use. The one I've had for the last ten years was getting pretty worn and I've been using it while riding my Triumph, which incurred the wrath of bugs and chain lube. I decided to get a new one and keep the old one for just riding.I like all the updated features, like being a bit longer, which now completely covers my main insulation layer. The sleeves are also a bit longer and I can pull my hands in if I don't need gloves, but don't want them exposed. The collar, which is one reason I didn't go with the Alpha SV, is one of my favorite features and is now a bit closer to the chin and maybe even a bit taller. Some reviews say it doesn't breathe as well as other shells, but if I'm sweating ... MoreThis is my third Beta AR in around twenty years. I like this color, which isn't current, since I have a lot of black and want a light color for b/c partners to be able to keep track of me easily. I also have a lot of blue, dark green, and brown/autumn colors, which all go with it. The only bright current color is red and I'm not big on red. So glad to have found this one.

My 15-year-old Columbia “beater” jacket, 5-year-old Montane puffer, and 3-year daily Montane fleece jackets have held up just fine in comparison. Do some digging on the Arc’teryx parent companies, their (not) warranty, and people's customer service experiences before you drop $$$ on one of these. Getting what I can from my exiting warranty. When that goes, I’m looking for a replacement from Patagonia or Montane (both lifetime guarantees).

Beta LT is a series of jacket of Arc'teryx. It is made of 3L (three-layer) Goretex fabric and has undergone DWR (durable waterproof treatment), which is waterproof, breathable and wear-resistant. The detailed design of Beta LT is excellent. For example, COHAESIVE® adjustment system is adopted, and the circular adjuster is hidden in the hood, keeping a minimalist appearance, and it is easy to press the adjuster to adjust the size of the hat even when wearing gloves. The brim is designed to be stiff by pressing glue, and it has the function of a small hat, which can resist light rain. The cuffs have hook and loop design, which is convenient to adjust the cuff size. However, Beta Jacket uses N30P fabric with c-knit backing, while Beta LT uses N40P fabric with warp-knitted back, which is more tear-resistant and heavier in grams than the former.Generally speaking, Beta LT is a jacket with perfect functions and excellent details, which gives outdoor users full experience and perfect protection.
