Great All Round Jacket

I bought this two months ago as I have been looking for a synthetic mid and even standalone layer for high output activities. Honestly, probably will be a top purchase for me. This jacket is great standalone over a merino base at -10C to -15C or under a soft or hardshell at colder temps. I have cross country skied, ran, and ski toured in this jacket as well. I find it breathes superbly, wicks moisture away from my body super fast to the point where my base layer is practically dry and the jacket is only slightly damp even when I have been overdressed and was getting quite the schwitz on.For reference I am 180cm, 70kg. I have super long arms and legs, I really appreciate the longer slimmer fits from Arcteryx as they never leave me with chilly wrists/ankles. Please don't change your sizing, this is one of the only outdoor retailers that doesn't size exclusively for short people. I appreciate being able to purchase women's specific fits especially for technical gear because it makes a HUGE difference performance wise. I could see the benefit of expanding to have petite, regular and tall sizes for jackets, similarly to your pants, as proportionally a lot of people could benefit from diverse sizing options.Would definitely recommend to anyone who is looking for a technical mid layer that performs super well in high output situations.I look forward to absolutely wearing the life out of this piece and making some sick memories with it's help.

Lightweight and handy
5 July 2023

The weather in New England couldn't be more perfect recently for when it arrived. We've had all types of rain and windy and dips in temperatures when a lightweight jacket came in handy and this worked perfectly. To be fair, I wasn't sure if I'd love the color when first picking it, as I don't wear such blues, but in person it changed my mind a bit. It surely has grown on me and made me think about changing up my style a bit to wear it. First opening the jacket to put it on, you're introduced to a different type of woven pattern that looks like raised bumps, but they're extremely soft and and eye grabbing. Just seeing the different type of inside made me want to put it on and see how it feels. From there, the jacket fit like a glove. Just seeing the different type of inside made me want to put it on and see how it feels. From there, the jacket fit like a glove. Being just a touch above average in height and having a larger upper body and long arms always sticking with Large size shirts/jackets, I always get concerned with fit. It is all too often where a jackets sleeves end up being too short or the jacket doesn't feel like it fits just right with the length or how non form fitting it may be. This jacket hit it on the head and made wearing it even more of a joy, fitting perfectly in all aspects. Even with it fitting my body type nearly perfect, its weight was so light and didn't feel it was noticeable shifting around in it. The pockets feel nice and secure, not flimsy in any way. The arms don't shrivel up when extending to grab something, maybe a factor of the different fabric, not scratchy. Breathable and light. Not living far from the White Mountains and with the vastly changing weather, taking it out for a few hikes was a no brainer to bring. Anything after hiking for a while and with temperatures changing, sure it can get warm quickly, but it was more comfortable to wear for extended periods and staying cool before any sense of overheating. It's easy to trust that this will be my jacket to grab when going out to adventure for hikes, trail walks, anything wear just another layer may be beneficial and won't wear me down.

I bought this jacket a couple of months ago because I wanted a light, yet effective jacket that I could take anywhere and in multiple conditions. I am from Florida, so I don't see weather below 35 degrees (and even that is rare). I recently went to Mt Rainier and hiked up multiple trails. The weather was around 26 - 41 degrees Fahrenheit with some wind here and there when I would hike through less woody areas. I literally actually opted to take off this jacket and just hike with a thin sweater because I actually felt TOO warm while hiking. This jacket does an excellent job and offloads unnecessary heat, but it still kept me too warm in 30 degree weather. That is because I was actually doing work climbing up the side of the mountain, but I never expected this jacket ... MoreI bought this jacket a couple of months ago because I wanted a light, yet effective jacket that I could take anywhere and in multiple conditions. That is because I was actually doing work climbing up the side of the mountain, but I never expected this jacket to be such an excellent product. I can't recommend this jacket enough!!Size wise, I am an XL in basically all brands, but I opted for a XXL in this jacket because the XL fit a bit too trim for my own comfort, but it did not hinder my own ROM. I just wanted something a bit roomier.A couple notes though. This jacket is water RESISTANT not water proof and it is wind RESISTANT not wind proof, so you will feel a little bit of wind if it is quite windy, and as long as it isn't pouring, you should be okay with the water protection. I spilled water on my chest with this jacket on and all of the water either bounced off or just beaded up on the jacket, but the jacket did not absorb the water. If you need something wind and/or water proof, the beta is the way to go.All in all, although this jacket is designated as LT I do think it is pretty hardcore and goes above and beyond its intended purpose when you need it to. This is truly an excellent product. You can use it as an everyday jacket even in 60 degree weather or you can put it to work in the alpine under freezing temperatures and it will perform just as well.

The Proton is my favorite jacket!
9 January 2023

I live in the Bay Area, CA where the winters are not normally too bad (i.e. we don't get almost any snow and coldest temps are normally in the 40s F). That being said, this past winter 2022 it actually dipped down to about freezing temps but still coming from the northeast originally, this isn't too bad in my opinion. Through the transition from fall to winter the Proton has been the jacket I reach for over and over even though I have many to choose from. The jacket has enough insulation without being bulky and keeps me warm while still having great ventilation so I don't overheat which is crucial because temps can start in the 40s F and warm up to 60s F in the same day. Weight-wise the proton light and when considering which jacket I would with me in my luggage when I visit the east coast in the winter I will always reach for this one. I've worn the proton in light to moderate rain and it has kept me dry even though it's meant to be a mid-layer and not gore-tex by any means. I wouldn't recommend for torrential downpours though. I also own an atom LT which I prefer to wear in the spring and fall but it's thinner than the proton and I wouldn't recommend for the winter or in the rain for that matter. Sizing is accurate, I'm normally an XL and am able to wear a sweatshirt underneath and easily zip myself up. However I am petite and the sleeves on any jacket are always going to be too long for me so I just live with it. I've also washed the jacket per the instructions (cold wash, gentle cycle, no softener, hang dry) and jacket comes out good as new. I love the proton so much I bought my husband one too because he complains that his other winter jackets retain too much heat.Arc'teryx, please make the women's proton in colors like velvet sand, desert sand, stimulus - I'll take any of them!

The most breathable soft shell I've ever owned

Traditional softshell jackets and hoodies usually leave me hot and bothered, but this Proton Lightweight Hoodie is anything but conventional or ordinary. This feels like my favorite breathable performance fleece piece with the added benefits of wind and water resistance.I wore this hoodie in assorted volumes of Pacific Northwest precipitation and layered it over various featherweight running shirts and the Arc'teryx Cormac Hoodie. It has a close athletic fit with amazing breathability throughout the upper sleeves and torso sides. The interior lining has a dimpled texture that traps body warmth and wicks moisture. It has a close athletic fit with amazing breathability throughout the upper sleeves and torso sides. The interior lining has a dimpled texture that traps body warmth and wicks moisture. The chest and hand pocket linings have more material for durability, and after my first hour on a trail, I could feel where this reinforced fabric along the lined pockets reduced vapor transfer, but only because the breathability throughout the rest of the garment--especially in the sleeves and torso sides--was that apparent. This hoodie would easily work as a cool weather trail running jacket, although articulated sleeves optimize it for alpine climbing, cool morning belays, and fast approach scrambles. The stretch gusset cuffs fit comfortably snug along my wrists to seal in warmth during arm extensions on belays, but I had to tug at my sleeves a bit to glance at navigation data on a large-face sport watch. As much as the exterior fabric is amazingly breathable, it's not reinforced, so I would layer it over a tougher shell before route finding and bushwhacking through thorny briar patches or up narrow, sapling-choked avalanche gullies.Like the rest of the jacket sizing, the hood fits comfortably close and it's unlikely to blow off in anything but head-on gusts. An exterior barrel-lock cord adjustment in back allows you to adjust the fit for easy pairing over a fleece beanie. Depending on your head shape this hood should accommodate small to medium climbing helmet sizes, although I didn't have the hood volume to properly fit both my large helmet and my oversized cranium. The DWR treatment keeps light mist and moderate rain off without hindering breathable performance. Over several hikes I found that there was no penetration from alpine mist and sprinkles. In moderate rain I remained dry for a little over an hour. In a near-downpour, I had around 15 minutes until water soaked my shoulders and ran down the inside of the hoodie. While I wish this outerwear could stuff down into a pocket for backpack storage, I suspect that long-term compression might affect the textured lining and eventually diminish the thermal and wicking performance. This won't stop me from bringing it along on trips, although I'll probably pack it loose on top of other backpack contents. As much as this jacket would be make a perfect casual statement someplace like on Reykjavik's cool summer streets, don't squander the breathable aerobic performance and potential to go far and fast with fewer layers. This is my new favorite in the mountains.

I owned a pair of Proton FLs for a few years. They were great, and the face fabric was super durable. I never had a pulled thread or pilling after countless hours of wearing and who knows how many washes. The new Proton Lightweight is completely different. In fact, it's so different that I think using the same product page and historical reviews is disingenuous to the max. The face fabric on this piece is garbage. After two days of hiking I had pilling under the armpits and across my shoulders from my backpack straps. I also had pulled threads EVERYWHERE. Seriously, there must have been 30-50 small pulls on every part of the jacket from basic wear. No bushwhacking here! Open-ground hiking. So the pulls were coming from daily wear such as getting in and out of a car ... MoreI owned a pair of Proton FLs for a few years. They were great, and the face fabric was super durable. It is so bad that I can't quite fathom how any material this fragile was even developed, let alone allowed past a beta-testing phase. Easily the worst piece of clothing I have ever bought, and I'm someone that has spent well into the five figures on Arcteryx product in my life.

The cuffs are not adjustable but are stretchy enough to pull up just below my elbow. The arcteryx logo and wording on the hood have a little black in them and are just subtle enough and make the hoody look stunning. Soft, stretchy, breathable and warm, this is the most comfortable and versatile jacket I have ever worn and it will be used every day this winter.
