Exceptionally versatile, hard-wearing and warm, the Thorium Hoody men's hooded down insulated jacket can be worn as a warm mid-layer or standalone piece for cool, dry conditions. Its regular fit is streamlined and layers easily under a hardshell in cold conditions. The lofty 750 fill-power goose down gives incredible warmth for little weight, is durably resilient, and packs easily. Layering is the key of keeping you dry, warm and using your energy efficiently. Put into the right systems, a good sequence of layers moves moisture away from your skin, conserves or dissipates heat and provides you with weather protection. Here they are. The first layer, worn next-to-skin will provide warmth and quickly move moisture away from your skin. Then, the second layer, is the insulation and fleece, that provides warmth while also dissipating heat during periods of high output. And finally, the third layer, the shell, which is the most weather-protective layer, worn on the outside of all other layers.

I recently purchased the Arcteryx Thorium Hoody and I am thoroughly impressed with its quality and performance. It is incredibly warm and durable, making it a great option for low output outdoor activities or a daily urban winter jacket. The materials and construction are top-notch, providing a cozy and comfortable fit. The lined pockets, hoody and hem sinch are thoughtful features that add to the overall practicality of the jacket. If layered properly I can stay warm in the extreme Canadian temperatures, down to -20/-25 with a light base layer and a fleece. Even with just a sweater underneath, the jacket performs well in temperatures around -10/-15. This latest hoody is my second Thorium I bought. The last green one is still pretty good after more than 10 years of wearing and washing. I noticed though that this year version is made with a different kind of exterior tissue. The feeling of the touch is not the same as my previous one. Is this a new material for the outter protection? Don't get me wrong here, the new version of this Thorium is as good as the 10 years old version as far as isolation is concerned. Your product are of an extreme quality. It's worth what we are paying for. I just love all Arc'teryx products.

I was looking for a jacket to fit a gap in my outerwear. I have a lite down jacket that's good to about -5C and a bulky down jacket for heavy duty cold (-20C and colder). I lacked a piece to wear in between those two. I had my eye on the Thorium but also saw it was transitioning between the old AR version and the new version. I wanted it in grey but the AR version was sold out and the new version didn't come in grey. With colder weather coming I decided to get the new version in black sapphire. I recently bought a Proton FL and Beta AR, both in medium, so was prepared to order the new Thorium in medium. I ended up going to our Arc'teryx store to see it in person, and I'm glad I did. I could barely zip up the medium Thorium with just the Proton underneath. And I mean barely. The large fit perfectly, so I went with that. It was surprising because I read the new version is baggier, yet I still had to size up. I've now worn the jacket a few times in colder weather (-12C with -22C windchill) with a t-shirt and the Proton underneath and I am very comfortable on my 30-40 minute walks. On the windiest, coldest day I put the medium Beta AR over top, and it fit. It was snug, but not uncomfortably so. Shoveling snow after my walk, I was too warm, so changed into a lighter jacket. So this jacket is warm, and it has filled my specific need perfectly. It's also very well made, extremely comfortable, and looks great too. To help with sizing, I'm 5'11" and 175 lbs with a 33" waist and needed the large.

I bought this jacket to be a daily driver in Ontario. I first bought a Mammut taiss IN Hooded Jacket to replace an old cerium LT. I loved my cerium but wanted to try something new as I almost always stick.to Arc'teryx jackets. Love the Mammut jacket even more than my cerium LT but realized the 7D fabric would be too fragile for everyday use. I relegated it to warm mid-layer duties and cold weather light technical uses. Now I thought this parka would be the perfect daily driver given its longer length and 30D fabric. I thought about the therme SV but thought it might be too warm for southern Ontario and it would have a more niche use here. Now this jacket is the perfect fit for casual everyday use. I thought about the therme SV but thought it might be too warm for southern Ontario and it would have a more niche use here. Now this jacket is the perfect fit for casual everyday use. It is slightly baggy through the arms and body for layering and a relaxed look. The sleeve length is perfect and I appreciate the extra few inches to cover my bottom. I'm 5'10 160lbs for reference. Now the hood. It's just so freaking small. I have a size large head (59cm circumference)- above average size. The cerium has what I thought was the greatest good ever. It perfectly wrapped my head with just enough space and stretch to make movement easy. Now this hood has zero stretch and the brim barely extends past my hairline. When it's zipped up it pulls the rest of the neck and shoulder area taught . It's exacerbated when wearing a backpack as it increases the tightness even more.I love using hoods instead of toques when it's cold and windy and I'm just transitioning from indoor locations I don't need a hat and can just toss the hood up.I wish I bought this jacket via the online arcteryx store and not have purchased this jacket in the states(on vacation) at a local store, otherwise I would be returning this jacket.I gave it three stars because the rest of the jacket is awesome and maybe some people with small heads will find the hood appropriately built.
I was searching for an everyday winter down jacket, and I was hoping to get something other than another popular down jacket that a lot of people wear in this town. The Thorium has so far been an excellent choice in almost every regard. I love the color (black sapphire) and the outer material seems to be a step up over similar jackets. The fill seems adequate and provides warmth without giving you the Michelin Man look.My only complaint is that for me, who wears a medium across the board in every other brand, the fit of this jacket is a little snug. I'm 5'11", 175 pounds, fit/athletic build, and for me the medium Thorium could use one more inch in the body (chest and below). It works great over just a t-shirt, but if I want to add even the lightest of layers (e.g., a primaloft synthetic vest, which is pretty thin), then it starts to get a bit tight. I'm keeping it, but I think this should be billed as a "fitted" and not a "regular" fit. And if next year's has that extra inch of room (and comes in black sapphire), then I'll replace my current version with that.
I have appreciated Arcteryx as an outdoor brand since the 90s, admiring their products, minimalist style, and an assortment of down and fleece offerings. I was always broke and needed more money to justify the cost. And a few years back, I did pick up a Cerium, but it didn't quite capture what I wanted, which was to find the best balance of a lightweight down jacket and warmth. I was aware of the Thorium, but it never hit me at the right time, with the right price, and the right color, to get me to pull the trigger. I like Arcteryx's colorways and the aqua-blue color I picked up. Sizing is always a concern with down jackets. I'm 5'9+, 138, reasonably slim, and the Men's small fits beautifully. I could get away with a Medium if layering were critical. I want to try on the new Thorium parka, which appears slightly longer and provides a little bit more room—guessing on that. The Thorium is now my new jacket from here on out.
The Thorium has a fantastic fit and is a great value however the second I put my hands in the pockets I was terribly disappointed. It seems Arc'teryx simply recycled the face fabric to construct the palm side of the pocket linings which has a sticky water resistant coating. It feels like you are putting your hands into a rubbery waterproof stuff sack. If they had simply flipped the fabric around so the sticky side is against your clothes rather than your bare hands it would have been much better. Better still, make it like your other jackets and use a fleece backed fabric for the pocket lining and charge a bit more. This may seem picky, but this is a down puff jacket after all and when I'm wearing one I typically have my hands in the pockets more than 50% of the ... MoreThe Thorium has a fantastic fit and is a great value however the second I put my hands in the pockets I was terribly disappointed. I haven’t had the jacket for long but so far it been really good. I am 5’9” and 175p the Large fits me great. I bought this jacket to be my around town mid range down jacket. And if need be throw it under my Rush jacket for cold days riding. The weight/warm feels nice for those cold but not crazy cold days. I’ve had a Thorium in the past and my only issue with that jacket was I would get wind up the bottom. TLDR: Some nice upgrades, but too many issues for the price to keep.I ordered the new Thorium Hoody in the Forage color in size small which I ended up liking a lot better than the black that I ordered 2nd. Problem is, I was sent the size Medium instead of the size I ordered. That's alright though as these things happen - no big deal. Since the returns site is non-functional, I purchased the small in size black since it would be a faster process than waiting for an email with a return link, but when I got the jacket, the first was virtually identical to the size medium that was accidentally sent to me the first time. In fact, the fit and feel of the jacket in black is somehow worse: the sleeves are too baggy for someone of a slimmer build, the cuffs don't form a ... MoreTLDR: Some nice upgrades, but too many issues for the price to keep.I ordered the new Thorium Hoody in the Forage color in size small which I ended up liking a lot better than the black that I ordered 2nd. In fact, the fit and feel of the jacket in black is somehow worse: the sleeves are too baggy for someone of a slimmer build, the cuffs don't form a seal around the wrist to keep out drafts, and in the body of the jacket the fit was identical to the medium - virtually nothing felt different.I do like the face fabric as my main issue with a lot of down jackets is they just feel too delicate. Like the Thorum AR that came before this, I really do like how sturdy and durable it feels compared to something like the Cerium jackets, so that's great. The jacket does feel reasonably warm as well but maybe not as lofty as I was hoping. I tested the jacket for warmth in the recent 10°F cold, but since the small fit the same as the medium, it didn't feel right and it was drafty in the jacket. Also, the lining in the pockets is top-tier and it's one of my favorite new features. It's a bit strange how the fit in the smaller size was somehow worse than the size medium. I'm 5'9 and 150 lbs with a slim build, and I'm tempted to try size XS, but I think I'm done with the whole online ordering experience as things just aren't meeting expectations. The nail in the coffin too was the comment from my wife about how looked cheap for the price. The forage color does look better for sure, but I'll put this one aside until I can maybe try it on in the store. I'm done trying to make this work online, and will most likely pick up the Atom Heavyweight Hoody instead.
just bought this and it arrived quickly. A bit shocked though to find it ships in a pillow size brown bag. What kind of serious cold weather protection can be contained in that form factor? Ultra delicate construction, does not look like something that will not start coming undone in ordinary use in the next 3 months. Here's my issues in no particular order:a. the dual zipper should go, who needs to unzip from the bottom? Sadly, found it will unzip on its own, because there's nothing there to maintain the zipper's position.b. uneven fill at the collar, and what is there is underwhelming to begin withc. uneven openings at the sleevesd. waist cinch - two issues here, one the actual cinch mechanism needs to be on the user's side of the anchor, not the opposite. ... Morejust bought this and it arrived quickly. Recall as you wear the garment you finger will catch the pull, and once constrained something has to lock the desired position. As it is constructed the sliding locking piece is on the wrong side, and will not anchor the desired cinch position, lol. QA people, inspect your own work. Second issue is, on the other side of the garment they put two sliding locking pieces on one side of the garment, where there only should be one.I really wanted to like this garment, but it is as thin as a handkerchief in feeling and looks like it will fail in the weeks to come
