The Arc’teryx Atom Hoody women’s hooded insulated jacket can be worn as an intermediate insulation layer or standalone. This versatile synthetic insulated mid layer is built to handle a range of conditions and output levels. Its synthetic insulation will retain warmth even when wet. Lightweight and highly compressible, this insulated jacket stores and carries easily for your city outings as well as far-away trips. Layering is the key of keeping you dry, warm and using your energy efficiently. Put into the right systems, a good sequence of layers moves moisture away from your skin, conserves or dissipates heat and provides you with weather protection. Here they are. The first layer, worn next-to-skin will provide warmth and quickly move moisture away from your skin. Then, the second layer, is the insulation and fleece, that provides warmth while also dissipating heat during periods of high output. And finally, the third layer, the shell, which is the most weather-protective layer, worn on the outside of all other layers.

This review is only really going to be relevant if you fit into what I would consider a fairly standard sizing block for apparel. At 5'11" with a 42" chest, I sit exactly in the middle of medium and large in Arcteryx sizing. A medium is just that little too snug, a large is ridiculous. In my case, Arcteryx helpfully suggests I decide "how I want my product to fit." How about you just make a product that fits as you intend it? When you look at a size chart, a medium equates to a EU 48 and a large to a EU 52, so Arc has just skipped an entire European size.I have a few Arc pieces and face this dilemma continuously. The Atom is incredibly versatile, and equally at home as a mid layer or outer layer, and the insulation is perfect for milder Autumn days. Layer up a bit and it could take you through the winter, although you'd need to size up to fit anything under it which would put you at risk of stupid arm length.I ended up going for medium in my Atom. It fits better than a large and although it's tighter than I would want, the stretch in the side panels is quite forgiving. But please Arcteryx, introduce a size that's equivalent to an EU 50 so we don't have to forever compromise on fit.

To preface this, I have the LEAF version which is only available for military and other service personnel, not the regular version, however to my understanding the difference is only a slight variation that is in ways most likely irrelevant for you, so keep that in mind but overall it wont make much difference for most people reading this.Ive used this jacket extensively in the field, and I swear by it. It is an absolute gem. This garment works as a standalone or mid-layer depending on the temperature, and provides absolutely excellent insulation. Its no coincidence that the atom is extremely popular among us in the armed forces, this thing will keep you warm and cozy, but isnt so warm that the moment you start exerting you are just dying of overheating which is ... MoreTo preface this, I have the LEAF version which is only available for military and other service personnel, not the regular version, however to my understanding the difference is only a slight variation that is in ways most likely irrelevant for you, so keep that in mind but overall it wont make much difference for most people reading this.Ive used this jacket extensively in the field, and I swear by it. This is perfect when paired with a shell jacket, I have the Beta AR and ive found through pretty heavy use that this combo is ideal. This jacket is also very suited to day to day use, its very fashionable and a great everyday fall jacket for casual use.My single only complaint with this jacket is that draw string on the hood can be pretty uncomfortable if tightened up too much and doesnt really do anything unless you tighten it up that much, but I’ve found the hood is completely adequate when completely loosened so its pretty minor in my opinion.Overall, I think this jacket was the best $300 I ever spent I dont really have any other way to put it.

I'm not a fan of Arcteryx insulated jackets overall as i think the assembly and stitching leaves much to be desired.

Truly an excellent Purchase. This Atom Hoody is simply the best mid-layer all round jacket one can buy. To start off, the quality is great, zipper never fails, it's water proof to an extent and keeps me warm in regular conditions. The hood is the perfect size (usually a miss with outdoor jackets), the interior is super comfortable and warm with no extra layer needed in the inside for extra comfort, and the overall fit is perfect if your wearing it underneath, over top, or as a single layer. For a 5'9 athletic build, this jacket fits me perfectly, with the perfect amount of space to move, not too tight or loose, which gives it a very stylish and athletic look on the outside.Temperatures: Now, here it gets iffy. For a 5'9 athletic build, this jacket fits me perfectly, with the perfect amount of space to move, not too tight or loose, which gives it a very stylish and athletic look on the outside.Temperatures: Now, here it gets iffy. The jacket is meant to be worn underneath an outer layer, or over-top of a hoodie, and for that it is literally perfect. Super comfortable and snug like you're getting a hug, warm, stylish and nonrestrictive, and can be worn in negative temperatures if used as a mid-layer. However, the jacket is also amazing when used on its own, as your only layer, that is under ideal temperatures. If your going on a walk, doing activities, or just talking to some buds at 10 degrees C and don't want to bundle up, this is perfect; keeps you warm, dry, doesn't make you sweat, and is very breathable and agile. However, if you are expecting this jacket to keep you warm in freezing temperatures, or in the snow, or in very windy circumstances where its 1 or 2 degrees, It simply will not. It will definitely help, and keep you somewhat warm, but not for long as it's not too thick. If used properly, it is a perfect jacket.Overall: The jacket Is perfect. I used it when I'm going on walks, scooter rides, going to eat, as an extra layer, going to school, work, while driving if its cold, at night when going out, and as a base/mid-layer when skiing, in the snow, or during the cold months of winter in freezing temperatures. Furthermore, this jacket paired with the arcteryx insulated or an arcteryx alpha or beta shell is the perfect combo to keep you agile, warm, and dry. With this very flexible and reasonable price tag, the jacket fully satisfies all my needs, and is a number one pick when going out on a regular cloudy day. Fully recommend it, and I have never been happier with this purchase.
Last year I was interested in buying the Atom hoodie, but I ended up not getting it because it didn’t fit right when I tried it on in the store. I am not a “curvy” woman, but the hip area was still way too tight. When I sized up, the top part was way too big. In addition to the cut, I found the coat proportions in general did not fit me. Nothing seemed to fall in the right place. I am 5 feet tall and the coat was cut to fit tall women. This could also be why the hip area didn’t fit - it was probably falling too low. Still, I think widening the hip area could help the coats fit better on a wider range of women. All of the Arcteryx coats that I tried on seemed to have this issue. It would really be nice to have petite sizing - but please don’t just shorten the coats ... MoreLast year I was interested in buying the Atom hoodie, but I ended up not getting it because it didn’t fit right when I tried it on in the store. It would really be nice to have petite sizing - but please don’t just shorten the coats and think that will work - the length of the arm holes, sleeves, and torso need to be adjusted too. Ultimately I was really disappointed. The coat is attractive, well made and would have been perfect for my hiking trip, but it unfortunately didn’t fit right.
Wow. This is my second Arcteryx Atom. My previous one held up well and I still use it, but I wanted a hoodie. I went into the store hoping to replace my Patagonia Nano( that after 10 years is still one of my favorite jackets). I was talked into this hoodie instead. I've used it for three months and the right cuff has exploded. I took it back to the store where I purchased it expecting to exchange it and was told by the employee that it was my fault because it was a tear, rather than a seam that came unstitched. She then suggested I purchase a patch; which I did, but was worthless due to the location of the tear. Duct-tape would have been more effective.I understand not honoring the warranty due to normal wear and tear, but this is a design flaw and should be ... MoreWow. This is my second Arcteryx Atom. I've taken great care of the jacket, washed it once-following instructions, and it's only three months old!! If you decide to purchase this jacket be very, very careful when donning and doffing. It's a definite weak point.I've been an REI Member for nearly 3 decades (as well as an ex-employee)-my family and I shop for nearly all of our outdoor items at REI, we have the credit card and have never abused the return policy. REI is willing to risk my loyalty over a poorly designed jacket???
By far one of the best jackets that Arc'teryx makes. It's incredibly versatile, light, packable, and still manages to be warm. I wear this comfortably at 0° C with a tee and crewneck sweatshirt. It blocks wind fairly well and works great as a standalone. I don't often wear it as a mid-layer but it definitely works well. Anytime I have to travel I bring this jacket because I'm often walking a lot during my trips so the jacket regulates my temperature exceptionally well (especially when carrying a bunch of stuff). Reminder that if you're standing still / not moving a lot this jacket will feel a tad cold.I think my only gripe about the jacket is the lack of short sizing and maybe alternate fits. It would also be great if the jacket was offered in other fits like regular and relaxed since the fitted fit of the jacket makes it hard to wear more casual clothes underneath.I'm 5'6 and 135 lbs with a slightly athletic build. I wear size small comfortably but can't wear baggy clothes underneath (e.g., sweaters with a large sleeves).
Excellent all-arounder! I was looking for a jacket to fill multiple purposes and this one fit the bill. I live in northern Nevada and mornings/evenings can get chilly so I wanted a jacket to ward off a lower temp that isn't overly bulky. I'd like to easily shed it when the temps warm without taking a lot of room in the stuff pack or just holding it. We don't get a ton of rainier but when we do, the hood design is nice. The pull strings draw the hood close to your head and will surely withstand windy days (which we get *often*!). Myother jackets have helmet compatible hoods so it's nice to have a normal-sized hood.My second purpose is to have a jacket that I can wear under my AlphaSV when I want something warmer in my layer strategy. I wear a base layer and a mid layer, and I'll tweak the mid layer based on expected temps. This jacket will be a very nice "heavier" mid layer to wear on cold days. This is also my first purchased in the revised sizing. I wear a small in AT shells (traditional sizing) but in the new sizing I wasn't sure where I would land. I bought a Small and Medium expecting to return one. The revised small sizing was too snug in the chest but the Medium fit really nice. Glad I bought both!Overall I am very happy with my purchase and I plan to wear it tonight at the local beer stop... :-)
I own many Arcteryx pieces, including two Atom Hoodys and one Atom Jacket, all of which are older versions (pre-2020). I purchased my first piece in 2012...an Atom jacket, size XL, which feels just as incredible as the day I tried it on. The amazing quality and fit has left a lasting impression. Fast forward 12 years later and the story is much different. I tried on the 2024 version at my local outdoor store and immediately noticed the shiny finish of the material which makes the jacket look and feel cheaper than the older version. The fit is very baggy around the waist and length is noticeably and unnecessarily longer. It's intended use is as a midlayer or standalone light jacket but it's cut like a parka. This is a fantastic, versatile, cozy, and great looking light-weight jacket. This jacket really shines in its versatility. I have taken it biking at night, downhill skiing, cross country skiing, hiking, and worn it around town. For warmer weather it’s a great stand-alone jacket. It breaks the wind and provides warmth while still being light and breathable. It’s also an amazing layer. For windy and moist conditions (like winter in the PNW) it’s a great outer layer over a mid-weight puffy jacket to help stay dry, cut the wind, and provide a little additional warmth. While it’s not a rain jacket, the DWR finish does a really good job keeping me dry under somewhat wet conditions. It is also a great base layer under a more durable shell and kept me warm and cozy ... MoreThis is a fantastic, versatile, cozy, and great looking light-weight jacket. It is also a great base layer under a more durable shell and kept me warm and cozy downhill skiing without feeling bulky or restricting my movements. The hood is not super large and designed to go completely over a helmet but was just large enough to provide more warmth on the chairlift when I pulled it over my helmet— the perfect compromise on hood size for me! I have never had a jacket that was quite this versatile as an underlayer, outer layer, or stand-alone jacket. It also has an exceptionally cozy hood and fleece neck that I appreciate every time I zip it all the way up. On top of it all this jacket just looked good on me, it was the perfect length for my body, moved nicely with me while I moved, had nice cuffs and draw cord without looking boxy, and I loved the blue (moonlit) color. I would highly recommend this jacket to anyone looking for a high quality and nice looking light weight (spring/fall) jacket or versatile layer.I’ve included pictures to show its versatility as a stand-alone layer, outer layer over a mid-weight puffy jacket, and the hood over my helmet.
