Made of waterproof, breathable and windproof fabric, the Arc'teryx Beta AR (Revised) women's hiking hooded jacket is the do everything garment created to deliver performance versatility in mountain environments. This highly versatile multipurpose non-insulated shell with hybrid construction offers full protection for diverse activities in alpine conditions. In addition, this updated style has ample room through the chest and waist to accommodate a wide range of midlayer types. Its hood with an internal collar provides more comfort in storms, climbing, skiing or simply to enjoy the outdoors. This outer layer is famous for its remarkable performances across a wide range of activities: this is The Dynamo of the Beta family. Layering is the key of keeping you dry, warm and using your energy efficiently. Put into the right systems, a good sequence of layers moves moisture away from your skin, conserves or dissipates heat and provides you with weather protection. Here they are. The first layer, worn next-to-skin will provide warmth and quickly move moisture away from your skin. Then, the second layer, is the insulation and fleece, that provides warmth while also dissipating heat during periods of high output. And finally, the third layer, the shell, which is the most weather-protective layer, worn on the outside of all other layers.

I primarily bought the Beta AR jacket because I was tired of spending a few hundred dollars on a shell every few years. The jackets would inevitably wear out and the zipper would start sticking. After reading every review I could, I decided fo bite the bullet and spend the money on the Beta AR. I am 5’9” and weigh about 140 pounds. The problem I tend to have with jackets is that they are often too short in the sleeves for my long arms.I liked the phantasm (plum/eggplant colour) and bought a size large. I was thrilled when it arrived and the sleeves are definitely long enough - with a bit of extra length for me!! I can wear it on it’s own or easily put a puffy vest or puffy coat under it without it being too tight. It is not a flimsy shell. I’ve only had it for about a week, so I can’t attest to performance in the rain or snow yet. It seems like a great coat to me and I am very happy with my purchase.

There are many shells on the market but if you had to pick one for adventure sin the mountains, the Beta AR would be it. You can pack all the puffies in the world but without a shell on a windy/wet day, you're going to be cold. The Beta is super light weight and packs down pretty compact in your backpack. I bring it on any alpine/winter adventures and use it for backcountry skiing. It has armpit vents and easy zippers to use when you're wearing gloves. The hood fits over a helmet, and the neck is high enough to block out wind when you're not wearing your hood.Tested in PNW, Colorado winters, and California. If you could buy one product from Arcteryx, this would be it. Most versatile and well made product.

I bought this jacket less than 2 months ago (Mars 2023). I absolutely love it and I washed it regularly and carefully as recommended on Arc'teryx website with Grangers products. However, I just noticed a big stain on the inside of the jacket, on the back. I tried to clean it with Grangers products and also using a soap specifically for the stain, but nothing worked. Additionally, there are two other stains (much smaller) on the outside of the jacket, in the front, next to the zipper, on the left side, which also can't be removed.I am so disappointed by this issue. I have had several issues with Arc'teryx products lately, and I'm starting to think that the quality is definitely not as good as it used to be!

If it is windy, rainy, or snowy this is my go-to outer layer. As a shell it is perfect for walking the dogs, skiing, or walking around town. Adjusting base and mid-layers I have worn the jacket in temps from -20 to 35 F and been comfortable. A few of my favorite things ... Room in the shoulders for full movement, pit zips, high pockets (work well with backpack waist belt), sleeves are the perfect length - don't ride up but not so long that they get in the way when using my hands. The it is comfortable with only a single baselayer without feeling over sized. I have worn upto a base layer, vest, and mid-layer without feeling like a stuffed sausage. For skiing the only thing missing is a powder skirt, but I didn't miss it.
I live in Ohio. Friends and I are ultrarunners, which means that we for some reason enjoy training for and racing (running) long distances such as 100 miles mostly in the woods/on trails. We are outside almost daily, year round. I decided this is the year that I'm going to buy some good gear and therefore NOT be cold in winter.A friend told me about Arcteryx, and after some research online it was clear that this is a superior brand.I read (on the Arcteryx web site) about their best recommendation for staying warm during activity: you buy one of the Arcteryx jackets, usually one of the insulated ones, which provides the warmth. You then buy a second "jacket" which is really the outer shell, and this provides the waterproof and windproof elements. So, in October ... MoreI live in Ohio. You then buy a second "jacket" which is really the outer shell, and this provides the waterproof and windproof elements. So, in October I bought jacket #1: the Arcteryx "Atom Hoody W," size small. This jacket utilizes synthetic insulation. I went to an REI to try it on and luckily they had one in my size. From the minute I picked it up, you could tell that the "buttery" - feeling fabric was superior. Perfect fit. Warm when used as a standalone jacket. First time I wore it was in 28 degrees in the middle of the night during the Indiana Trail 100 (mile endurance run) later in the month, and it kept me warm. It worked. Loved this. But now this month, to the point of my review............................ I have purchased jacket #2: the Arcteryx "Beta AR Jacket W," also size small after reading about the fit. I ordered it from an REI store as there was not one in stock (which is fine). It was shipped (free for members) to the house. I was so nervous to take it out of the packaging... right away I could feel that this fabric is no joke. As some others have said, the fabric is very... firm... it's not soft... it makes a bit of a crinkling sound... but this type of (Gore-Tex) fabric is what gives you the windproof and waterproof elements. This shell looks so well made.So the fit... I was nervous about ordering another small, since I wasn't sure if my Atom Hoody would fit comfortably underneath. But!... the fit is perfect. What I mean by this is that as some have said, a size small, for example, is not that "small" ... meaning 1) the sleeves are long, which I think is OK because you can secure the velcro around the wrist cuff and therefor you don't notice the length of the sleeves... and 2) there is plenty of room to fit base layer(s) and a jacket underneath this shell.I wore both outside... the jacket underneath followed by the shell on top... it was super windy out... and wow, I hardly noticed the wind. Game changer.I plan on wearing either one or both of these Arcteryx jackets for probably the next six months of winter here in Ohio, mostly during running/hiking but obviously you can use it for other purposes too, like not freezing in the grocery store haha.Overall I feel that this Beta AR jacket is outstanding. It's a serious investment/commitment, and I hope that I own both jackets for years.
This is a great jacket. This shell keeps me dry in the rain, even after several hours. The hood works with my helmet or can be adjusted well for use without a helmet. I used it in Iceland and Alaska as a top layer. It works as a great wind block and/or rain jacket. The hood can be adjusted to protect the face well. The face/neck lining adds comfort when wearing this jacket for long stretches.Pit zips are well placed and hand packets are comfortable. The zippers work easily for me even if wearing gloves. The jacket is sized to allow me to wear layers under it, if needed. The sleeves are long on my short arms but they are easily adjusted at the wrists or I can adjust them longer if my hands are cold. The material is somewhat crunchy, but it is worth it to stay warm ... MoreThis is a great jacket. This is my must-have jacket for hiking, backpacking and mountain climbing. Don't let its light weight fool you! This Gore-Tex jacket is the perfect shell for all weather: rain, snow and wind. I've taken these jackets to ski resorts, local hikes and longer trips such as Mt. Whitney, Everest Base Camp and Kilimanjaro, where I have encountered four seasons in a day! The Beta AR has always delivered. This jacket has kept me dry while also fitting perfectly. I really like the hood that comes with this jacket. It keeps the water and wind off my face really well. I appreciate the construction of this, and how they were mindful to create a jacket that fit well, but also came with practical features, such as the chin guard, pockets and zippers. And, I love the color options!I will be bringing this jacket on upcoming climbs, and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to venture out into the elements. It has been my go-to outer shell for years, and hasn't let me down once. Make sure to take care of it, as it will last longer if you do. I try to wash mine after a good 10 uses. I've had a few of these (yes I have more than one!) for years, and they still hold up.It's also super easy to pack when I'm not using it, and doesn't take up a lot of room in my backpack. That's a huge plus, because I like to pack as light as I can.I highly recommend this jacket. It's great for so many activities!
I've had two of these jackets (one I bought in 2017, one that got replaced under warranty in 2019). Both of them started wetting out frequently despite following the specific care instructions for washing/drying the jacket and spraying with DWR spray. They also started coming apart near the shoulder area (2 layers of the jacket separating). Once they wet out, they take forever to dry! I was told my jacket can't be replaced under warranty a second time, which is fair, but I'd expect better performance from such an expensive jacket, especially when I don't use it for super intense activities. I use it for light cycle commuting in the city as well as day hikes in the mountains when I'm on vacation. I use it for light cycle commuting in the city as well as day hikes in the mountains when I'm on vacation. It’s frustrating that these jackets (that cost a significant amount) require such frequent high maintenance care to continue working well (or unfortunately not so well, as has been my experience). I’ve spoken with people who have other brands of gore-Tex outer layers who say their gear maintains the waterproofing with much less care and washing than I’ve put into my beta AR. Especially after the first one having similar issues, I washed and sprayed my second one religiously, likely every 10-15 uses. And I rarely use it for any heavy activities- it’s never gotten properly dirty or sweaty because I wash it so often. I hope arc’teryx can use this feedback to improve its gear so issues like this no longer happen.
This jacket arrived just before Hurricane Nicole - perfect timing!Things I love:It's just long enough to cover my bum (no water seeping into my waistband, drier bum when sitting)double-adjustable hood (less of it flying off with wind)cuff velcro that actually works & armpit vents (because all rain jackets need them)layers SO WELL - it's warm with just a base layer, but allows for a sweatshirt underneath as well with plenty of movement and doesn't look awkward either way.color: the yellow is almost mustard, which is a fun play on the classic "yellow raincoat" of childhood that I loved.Overall, a great addition to my outdoor gear. I'll be wearing this for years to come!
this is my 3rd one. First one i got was back in early 2000 and the jacket was the BEST!! It was Made in Japan and solid!! 2nd beta i got probably 4 years ago, love the purple color but it was getting too tight for me… blame the covid. I recalled i only paid like $300. This time i was shocked the price went all the way to $600!! The cut of the jacket is so different…. not flattening at all very boxy as others have said. I’m so glad i didn’t order medium… and the material feels so thin… will be another rain storm next week and i will try it out but this is most likely my last one cuz the price is just way too much…
