Arcteryx Beta LT Womens Waterproof Jacket - Black - XL

The Arc'teryx Beta LT women's lightweight hiking jacket is the do everything and is very versatile for mountain environments with its waterproof, breathable and windproof Gore-Tex membrane. Designed with a purposeful simplicity, this non-insulated shell features a trim fit that eliminates bulk, moves with your body and fits comfortably over your insulation and mid layers. Its helmet compatible StormHood gives full coverage without impeding sight lines and pit zips provide rapid ventilation. This outer layer is famous for its remarkable performances across a wide range of activities: this is The Minimalist of the Beta family. Layering is the key of keeping you dry, warm and using your energy efficiently. Put into the right systems, a good sequence of layers moves moisture away from your skin, conserves or dissipates heat and provides you with weather protection. Here they are. The first layer, worn next-to-skin will provide warmth and quickly move moisture away from your skin. Then, the second layer, is the insulation and fleece, that provides warmth while also dissipating heat during periods of high output. And finally, the third layer, the shell, which is the most weather-protective layer, worn on the outside of all other layers.

Arc’teryx doesn’t care about female snow pros

Arc’teryx Women’s gear is terribly cut and lacking the functionality of men’s gear. Why does it not come with outside pockets on the chest? Also while the arm length is okayish the torso length is way too short, meaning when you stretch up or outwards or use a shovel and probe, it slides up and you’re belly button will show. Also the material doesn’t work well with (avalanche) backpacks, as it’s so slippery the straps keep sliding off, or the jacket slides up under the belly strap. Super annoying and definitely not safe - men’s gear certainly fits a lot better. If you have small hips, get men’s gear. Then you can also get the pro materials they don’t offer in women’s clothing. Argh!

I purchased this jacket because I was looking for a three-layer Goretex jacket that I could use for running and for all-around outdoor wear. I have tried other three-layer Goretex jackets - this 40 denier jacket is slightly heavier than the 30 denier jacket I have used by another brand, making it a tiny smidge heavier and more crinkly, but also slightly more durable. In comparison to that other jacket, the Arcteryx has more features and overall better engineering. The waist draw cord, for example, is easier to use. The hood has more capability for adjustment, with potential for being tightened horizontally and vertically. The pit zips have two way zippers so I can adjust them to sit any way I like! Size-wise, I noticed some women find this jacket slightly big. I am 5'8" and 122 lbs and I would have to say it is comparable in sizing to other goretex jackets I have tried. There's enough room to layer underneath (I wore it running last night in -17 weather layering a long-sleeved sweat-wicking layer, a 200 gm long-sleeved merino shirt, a micro-fleece sweater and the Arcteryx Atom LT hooded jacket) and the fit was comfortable. The shell was warm and breathed well, I had enough room to move, I did not feel constricted. I have had quality/warranty issues with de-lamination of zippers on goretex jackets before, and the lamination on this jacket appears to be of a superior quality. That being said, I am careful when zipping and unzipping it, I make sure the tracks are aligned on either side and when I get in the house from the cold I wait a few minutes for the jacket to warm up before I unzip it (I'm not sure what temperature the lamination is tested to and I don't want to go through the hassle of making a warranty claim). The fit is nice enough to wear in the city if I needed to, even with all of its performance features it still has a stylish cut, very neat and minimalist.

I had a Beta LT that I picked up on sales about 15 years ago and that thing was bomb proof. Shed the rain and kept me dry for many a years until the lamination that head the waist cord and hood started delaminating. Decided to get a new one in August 2022 and have had it a little over a year with very little use (less than 10 times light drizzle). Took it on a 3 night backpack trip in the Olympic National Park where rain was forecast and got soaked the first day. That said, even the Patagonia 3-ply H2No shells that my partner and son were wearing finally soaked through by the second day. These expensive 3-ply layer Gore-Tex and H2No technologies just were no match for the Alaskan storm front that came through the Pacific Northwest this week. These will not keep you dry.

Excellent all around jacket

I got the immersion color a couple of months back in a size medium. I am 5'9" and 155lbs and the jacket fits me perfectly. I can wear a baselayer, light puffer and this and I am set. I wouldn't be able to wear a heavy puffy underneath but this is perfect for activity. The color is excellent and matches just about anything. It doesn't scream woman's in terms of color which I love. This jacket is excellent for just about everything. The pockets are high enough that nothing sits too low when they are full but not so high like some of the jackets just used for climbing. I love the pit zips and they were super helpful when I was doing a winter 14er. Gave me some respite when I was working hard and the jacket kept me extremely warm at the top. One insulating layer and I feel like I could do just about anything in this jacket.I appreciate that Arc'teryx is taking the steps towards a more sustainable product as well. Bluesign is a good start.I would wear this jacket for anything in the winter. It could definitely act as a rain jacket in colder weather especially. All in all, its just excellent. More burly than the Zeta that I have for summer backpacking but not so heavy that you can hear me coming for blocks. And again, the color is excellent.

More than just water resistant
5 October 2023

I bought this jacket for a hiking trip to Iceland, Greenland, and the Cotswolds in England. I own other water resistant jackets, they cannot withstand an extended downpour and still keep me absolutely dry inside like this jacket did. Good zippered pockets (2 outside, 1 in). Velcro at cuffs plus drawstrings to cinch bottom of jacket and shrink down the large hood (I have a small head). built in small visor. Negatives: Expensive and has a crinkly sound, but I'll accept that because it's water-proof!

New favorite
14 January 2022

I purchased the Beta LT in black to replace my old Arc’Teryx shell from 2009. I am normally a size small, but chose an XS noting other reviews said it fit slightly big. The XS small does fit nicely and is about the same size measurement-wise compared to my old shell which was a small. I can wear it with my Atom AR or LT for perfect layering. I do choose clothing with a similar fit to my Arc’Teryx so nothing bulky or big, but more fitted base layers, as I will wear this for more active or outdoor pursuits. I can see if one wants more room for layering, staying with your regular size would be ideal. I like the pit zips and pockets for keys and the durability of the material. Arc’Teryx has been a long time favorite due to its minimal and understated design.

Nice lightweight Goretex Jacket
15 January 2022

My old Arc’teryx Hardshell kicked the bucket a few years ago. I’ve tried other brands and styles but nothing really worked. So I waited for the post Christmas sales and tried a variety of companies and shells. In the end it was between this and the Beta AR. I opted for the AR. The beta is a really nice jacket. Like most Arc’teryx I had to go up by 2 sizes to fit my shoulders and get the length for my body. But it was still a decent fit. This is typical for me with this brand so I do say it runs true to size. I just happen to have broad shoulders a long torso so many brands i have to do the same.In the end I went with the AR because it had the inside pocket, was a sturdier jacket for hiking, a bit longer, and most important, the AR went on a really good sale so it ... MoreMy old Arc’teryx Hardshell kicked the bucket a few years ago. Definitely worth considering.

Worth every penny!
8 June 2021

First, let me start by saying that I actually got into an argument with my mom at the REI check out lane because of the cost of this jacket! She was telling me it was a great investment but I wasn't buying it was worth $400.00 of an investment! I used my 20% off a full priced items to get this silly (so I thought at the time) jacket! Let me tell you, I just tested this jacket out on a super rainy day when it was pouring! The rain rolled off this jacket and the hood with the part that keeps the rain off your face was awesome! And I never felt hot or sticky in it! It felt very light! It was so comfortable, I actually wanted to stand in the rain and watch it perform! It seems a bit ridiculous that one rain jacket could be more superior than another rain jacket because it just repels rain right!? I don't know why, but this jacket really is superior and worth every penny! My advice, if you are looking for a rain jacket that will perform and last, use your 20% off membership coupon when it shows up to get this! You won't be disappointed! Trust me! My mom is always right! As a side note, I did size up to a medium because I wanted more room to layer things underneath. The small was a bit tight for layering. I don't like my clothing tight so I usually wear medium in most things.

Worth the splurge
19 December 2022

This jacket was a big splurge, but I do not regret it. The Beta LT is a beautiful mauve color which is a nice alternative to black. It is very warm but light and packable. The hood is perfectly large to fit over my winter hats and can be tightened as needed. The sleeves have a Velcro adjustment at the cuff which was very easy to use even with big winter gloves on. The pit zips are an amazing feature to help control the heat, they zip in both directions which is a really useful feature. I found the small to be a perfect fit, flattering but a little roomy so I can fit layers underneath. I have used in the wet snow and found it to be waterproof - looking forward to seeing how it does in the rain. I will be using this layer for all 4 seasons of hiking.

generous fit, doesn't feel like a plastic bag
22 October 2021

I spend a couple of hours outside every day as part of my job, and I'm a bike commuter. I needed a rain jacket that will fit a curvy woman with the ability to layer clothing underneath, that has an adjustable hood to maintain my peripheral vision to watch for traffic, that has pit zips for ventilation, and that doesn't feel like I'm wearing a plastic bag. This jacket fits the bill. I've worn it in the rain twice so far, and it has kept me dry. The arms feel too long when I'm just standing there, but that length allows for full range of motion and helps keep my hands warm. I have trouble with the zipper sometimes, but I seem to have trouble with all zippers. The length is nice, it covers my rear end when I'm standing, and is long enough to provide decent coverage ... MoreI spend a couple of hours outside every day as part of my job, and I'm a bike commuter. One thing I don't like is the fact that this jacket gets dirty easily - I somehow got black marks on it the first time I wore it, and I can't seem to wipe them off. Also, I hate the hook-and-loop adjustment at the wrists. I always manage to get it caught on woven fabrics, which damages them. At least the hook part is slightly narrower than the loop part at the end - that helps.
