*Not HomeKit Secure Video compliant*I started with the warning as I did not fully understand Arlo’s labeling system for it’s doorbell. The wired version is compatible with HomeKit (wireless is not) and requires an Arlo home hub (sold separately) to integrate into HomeKit. I knew these things prior to buying, but what I did not know was that the doorbell is NOT HomeKit Secure Video (HKSV) compliant. Meaning it will not seamlessly integrate into your iCloud account. Why is this important? Because HKSV means that you use Apple’s iCloud account to process the video on your home hub, then send to iCloud for retrieval on mobile devices. This is a huge security bonus as ONLY your devices see the video itself then is encoded on both ends.If the security doesn’t matter ... More*Not HomeKit Secure Video compliant*I started with the warning as I did not fully understand Arlo’s labeling system for it’s doorbell. This is a huge security bonus as ONLY your devices see the video itself then is encoded on both ends.If the security doesn’t matter than it would be one less subscription that’s needed as iCloud+ accounts (any paid for iCloud account, not the free one) has access to HKSV with a rolling 14 day viewing history. All HKSV does not take up any storage of your iCloud account.Ok so the product itself:The camera has great quality build compared to others I have tried. It’s sturdy and solid enough to withstand some blows from bumps while moving larger objects in or out of house.Installation was easy and instructions clear. Would take 10 minutes to install. I took longer as I had to run the wiring as there was none previously.I’m the couple months we have had it up it has worked flawlessly. Detection is superb along with video quality. It has a very wide angle of view. All in all the product itself is a great product. The cons:It’s not HKSV compliant due to Arlo’s policy on security. It’s their choice but they did not clearly define this without research. This means if you want detection processing and all of the benefits then you must subscribe to Arlo’s service for $2.99 a month for one camera or $9.99 a month for up to 5. Compared to iCloud which would cost $8 a month but come with cloud storage for your Apple devices.Needs the hub to integrate into HomeKit ($100 and constantly out of stock). I wanted this as it creates less network traffic along with creating a base for recording video on local storage so this was not as large of a decision for me, but for many who want a HomeKit doorbell an extra $100 would be a dealbreaker.*Note HomeKit is not a huge thing as I normally use the native Arlo app and not HomeKit, likewise I get previews on my Apple Watch through Arlo*If you choose the doorbell and hub then it means future camera purchases would draw you to other Arlo cameras given you invested in the hub. I also have 4 wireless outside cameras of Arlo and like them also (sans battery life compared to others). The mobile app does what it needs to but is slightly clunky. It could use some refining, but is very usable. It’s just missing that polished touch.

I’ve had the Arlo door bell for about a month now and to look at who visited the door throughout the day is great but answering the door bell live and talking to someone at your front door never seems to work. You get a black picture, you can hear them talk but can’t see them and most of the time they can’t hear you talking to them and often by the time you get it to work they’re gone. This happens when I’m at home directly connected to my home Wi-Fi or away connected to cellular. To say it might be my home Wi-Fi it’s just not the case with me. I’m a network engineer, I install networks for major sporting venues throughout the US and I have an extensive home Wi-Fi with business class Cisco APs throughout and one of the APs is in my home office right next to the door ... MoreI’ve had the Arlo door bell for about a month now and to look at who visited the door throughout the day is great but answering the door bell live and talking to someone at your front door never seems to work. I’m a network engineer, I install networks for major sporting venues throughout the US and I have an extensive home Wi-Fi with business class Cisco APs throughout and one of the APs is in my home office right next to the door so it’s not my home Wi-Fi it’s Arlo. Inside the Arlo app I even turned down the video recording quality to 720x720 instead of using 1536x1536, it did help viewing the videos that were recorded throughout the day but not answering the door bell live. The video images are very good if you can keep it at 1536x1536 but you will most likely have to drop it to 720x720. I have to say the sound is very good. I can hear the sound of my flag pole in the front yard and you can hear people talking inside my home office even with the front door closed. Setting the field of view to get notified is good if your Arlo is square to the field of view. If your using the angled bracket that comes with Arlo then you can’t adjust the field of view properly at an angle, you can only adjust it square so it may leave out some areas you want to monitor or you have to monitor some areas you don’t so you can get the areas you do want.If it wasn’t for answering the door bell issue Arlo would be a 5. If you just want to view and playback who comes to your door throughout the day, like a security camera, Arlo is great at a lower video quality. But if you want to answer the door when someone rings the door bell, see and talk to them, Arlo has an issue. Maybe Arlo will fix this issue with an update but as of today it doesn’t work well.I included a pic of the quality you get from the Arlo, a pic of my Cisco AP in my office and a pic of the Arlo itself on the wall.

But I actually installed my Arlo on a different wall and neatly and use stucco patch to cover the old ring mess… don’t listen to other bad reviews on here. whether you have a base station or not, the Cost for home security shouldn’t be a “con” or “deal breaker.” What’s the cost of your life of having home security if you pay more in “fast food” places each month versus a “HOME SECURITY PLAN/PAYMENT”????

Arlo is a prime example of why certain acquisitions should be blocked. Ever since Netgear took over, it's prime mission has been to milk as much money out of the Arlo product line as possible. It's not even enough to just have one subscription - you need three different tiers. Honest marketing for this would be it's a glorified video intercom system without a subscription. It's likely why you always see these on sale. it's really hard to justify even the $129.99 retail price tag ($149.99 when I purchased mine) when it won't even provide motion detection alerts like a majority of smart video doorbells do without a subscription. There's also no way to view the camera feed on an Apple TV. There's also no way to view the camera feed on an Apple TV. My relatives have Google and Ring products and can do all of these things without subscriptions. I was the silly person that went Arlo enticed by the 7 days of free recording and they even tried to strip that away and force subscriptions on users until they got a huge wave of backlash and reversed course rather quickly. You'd think the merger of two companies would result in better products, but instead the Arlo line is mostly in the same place just with more inferior offerings to create lower price points. HomeKit functionality was promised back two years ago - still doesn't exist today. Arlo forums show the same copy and paste answer: it's still planned with no ETA. Seriously considering selling all of this Arlo stuff and going Ring or Google.
The wire-free doorbell does exactly what it is supposed to do. Battery is beefy, but not so big that it makes the device look bulky. Comes in white or black, which is nice to have options that match your home finish. Setup is easy in the Arlo app. Notifications are really fast. WiFi connectivity is suprisingly strong. I have a WiFi Mesh system and the mesh router closest to this device needed an update. The device connected to the primary router with good signal, through several stone walls, to the router which is a good 60 yards away. Definitely look at adding a CHIME to your purchase. Honestly, I should have purchased a second Chime to go with my doorbell. I can take the Chime out to the back porch if I am BBQ'ing or hanging out by the firepit. Before upgrading to the Arlo Essential Doorbell I had an ADT doorbell which was close to useless after the first year of use. The Arlo doorbell is relatively simple to install and setup, their app does a really good job at walking the user through the process. My only discontent with this product is the latency, expect a 4 to 6 second delay on the live stream but given the fact that its processing 2k image through wifi I can't really blame the product. Note: The latency could make it difficult to interact through the call feature since it can take a few seconds between interactions. On the positive side, a full battery can last up to 6 months, it will all depend on the activity. Lastly, the quality for night time image is very impressive. Overall, if you don't mind the latency, then this product will work great for you, it is definitively and improvement over any 1080p doorbell which is the reason I purchased the product.
I have several Arlo cameras and a base station and thought the Arlo doorbell would be a nice addition to our home security. I purchased the doorbell without considering other brands that would have required yet another online account and app on my phone. In the Box:• Doorbell• Flat mounting plate• Angled mounting plate• Power kit• Release pin• Wall screws and anchors• Wire extensions, wire nuts, and extra screwsSetup:The Arlo App takes you step-by-step through the setup process. The “power kit” is installed first. It activates your current doorbell chime once the Arlo doorbell is installed. Replacing my old doorbell was relatively straightforward. My doorbell wires were almost too short, but I managed to connect the Arlo doorbell without the wire extensions provided in the box.Despite having a compatible Arlo base unit, the new doorbell could not find it during setup and I wound up connecting to my home WiFi. The instructions in the App did not mention pressing the button on the base unit prior to (or during) installation. This is likely the cause of my inability to connect to the base station. Once connected via WiFi, online instructions for switching to a base station are cumbersome and require that the doorbell be removed and reset. I opted to keep the WiFi connection as it left an open slot on my base stations for another Arlo device.Function:I and my wife were not prepared for the barrage of notifications we were about to receive!Mowing the lawn, watering the plants, wind blowing the potted plants on the front porch, the garbage truck and other large vehicles driving down the street…My wife got so annoyed by the constant pings that I had to disable notifications on her phone. She still gets the video clips, but doesn’t have to listen to each notification.I still get notifications and am getting used to the 50 to 100 pings on my phone (and watch) every day. After all, what’s the point of having a motion sensing doorbell if you don’t know when it is activated. There is no option to turn the camera off when working outside the house near the front door. I would appreciate a software update to the Arlo App to make this happen. The power kit for the indoor chime is relatively anemic. The chime makes some noise, but not nearly as loud as before. I hear the notifications and see the videos on my phone, but cannot hear the doorbell chime as I used to.Pressing the door bell calls my phone. There are notable delays on both ends of the conversation that make it difficult to communicate in real time. Ignoring the call allows the person at the door to leave a message. The quality of the recorded video and audio is amazing.Overall:Security systems are much like camera equipment. Once you have made an initial investment in the brand, it’s hard to justify moving to another. If you already have security devices from another vendor, this doorbell is not worth switching for. If you don’t presently have any security devices, you should consider all available the systems (including doorbells) and make an informed decision. If you already have Arlo security devices, this doorbell is a nice addition. Just be prepared for the fact that the doorbell camera cannot be turned off and you will likely receive more notifications than you expect.
I'm confused by all the raving reviews for Arlo.Positives: easy to install with the step by step instructions. Here is where that ends. For reference: Home setup - mesh internet system with 1GB internet speeds. The doorbell is also within 15 feet of the nearest router.Video Quality: People at the door, you can see their faces clearly. However, if a car pulls up on the driveway (20 feet or so from the doorbell), you can't read the license plate. it really should be better than that.Activity zones/sensitivity: (Home reference: Front Door is 50-60 feet to the street). Activity zones don't work! We set activity zones to not even consider the street in front, yet every car that drove by was a notification. We then decrease the sensitivity to the lowest possible ... MoreI'm confused by all the raving reviews for Arlo.Positives: easy to install with the step by step instructions. Activity zones don't work! We set activity zones to not even consider the street in front, yet every car that drove by was a notification. We then decrease the sensitivity to the lowest possible setting. This also changed nothing. Every shadow, every movement outside the activity zone, was captured. There are so many notifications that it is no longer useful.Video/Voice on Doorbell: If you are viewing the camera in the app when someone comes up, the moment they push the doorbell, the feed is cut. You won't get the feed back for 20+ seconds at best. If you choose to answer via your phone, it is delayed by 10 seconds or so on average. It is not possible to have a conversation.Durability: We have had ours for 2 years. It recently just stopped working. For reference, we are not in an extreme climate. The doorbell is shielded as it is a covered front porch. Moisture is not an issue, as we are in a dry climate, and it is not directly in the sunlight.Customer Service: They are not great... I followed their online troubleshooting steps, including testing the voltage and making sure power is getting to the doorbell. The customer service agent just kept telling me to repeat the steps. When I said, I have done this already, please help me out, this individual disconnected and I had to start the process all over again.Overall, while it is enough for the sake of having a smart doorbell, it is not one I would recommend. We have moved on to a different brand. Hope this helps.
I have had nothing but trouble with my Arlo doorbell since day 1. While the app and features are nice, they only matter when the thing actually works, which it does not– not for long enough to matter, anyway. My doorbell disconnects from the network every 4-5 days, sometimes longer, sometimes less, but every time. I have a powerful WAP network with awesome coverage, so it shouldn't be a problem at all. After the doorbell disconnects, it takes a complete hardware reset back to factory settings in order to get it to connect again. This is not acceptable for a security device. I have even done a complete hardware replacement for a new doorbell (same model), with no changes. The worst part is that I have not found any other system that allows me to view saved video ... MoreI have had nothing but trouble with my Arlo doorbell since day 1. I'm stuck with this failure until further notice. Maybe if you have a regular wireless router you'll have better luck than me. I should have just done the full return and purchased something better when I had the chance.
I have excitedly been eyeing on this camera system for few months, as soon as they were available for a discounted price, I bought them. All 3 Cameras weren’t powering up even after charging batteries to full, tried swapping batteries with each camera. Spent so much time on support forums & manuals, didn’t help. So, I tried Arlo support, after troubleshooting, they suspected it was an issue with Cameras. Now, instead of replacing all 3 cameras, they offered to send 1 for now to test it in isolation. I wasn’t ready for this back & forth with them. So, I just returned the whole camera system & got another one, assuming earlier one was a defective product, & hoping the new one would be fine.Guess what !! Exactly same issue. Defective cameras & not so good customer support from Arlo. Finally, retuning this one as well, never coming back to Arlo products.
