Energy savings are an important component for trail runners traversing across long distances, which is why Asics applied Guidesole technology to the Trabuco Max trail shoe. This trail running shoe provides improved cushioning and traction while allowing runners to cover more terrain with less effort. Guidesole technology is a sole construction that consists of a responsive toe spring that's scientifically proven to save energy over the long run. Thanks to the reduced load placed on the limbs from foot-strike to toe-off, this technology gives trail runners more potential to run further since they'll use less energy to cover the same distance. Traction is a necessary component for running off-road, which is why they have incorporated Asicsgrip technology in the outsole. This rubber compound is functional for providing traction, especially amongst wet and slippery conditions. Incorporated into the Asicsgrip outsole, Asics applied an uphill and downhill lug pattern for improved agility when navigating varying topography. Adding 28mm of Flytefoam technology under the heel and 23mm under the forefoot, this shoe provides excellent cushioning for runners that are out on the trail for hours at a time. Because of the high stack height, stones and roots will be better absorbed by the midsole. The combination of a smooth forward rolling motion, improved cushioning, and better traction makes the Trabuco Max shoe a great training partner for a variety of trail running workouts.

I use these with Superfeet orange insoles for walking fast or jogging on a flat asphalt rails-to-trail. I will be using them on hiking trails in the Rockies if I ever manage to leave IL again (!). Wanted to wait a spell to review them b/c while, as others have reported, the bottom half of the shoe is clearly well designed, the top half is a little odd, with a fast lacing system that tucks into an oversized tongue. So: great cushion, great grip, a lot of bounce, and I don't think I could ask for more in this regard. It's a somewhat snug fit, and I have a high instep, but I've experienced no problems to date on the trail. And once you get used to the lacing system, it's remarkably efficient. Ok, the issues here are minor in terms of details, but added up, they compromise the use of the Trabuco Max for any run over 10-12 miles on trails. 1. The tongue is DUMBO huge; why? 2. the Lacing systems, while good in concept, needs sorting out. It needs flatter, less "cutting over the foot" laces (1) and (2) also needs an extra eyelet towards end of the tongue to have true lock-down at the heel that doesn't cut across the foot. I've sorted out the lacing, enough, to make them usable. But this is such an "almost-great" trail shoe. The grip is insane, love the rocker feeling, it's a substantial shoe that somehow magically feels faster and like it WANTS to go fast. Runs a tad bit shorter than some other ASICS, but not a real issue up until about 20 miles then my feet ... But FIX that tongue length, and the LACING apparatus, and you have a winner. Hope you make a TrabucoMax 2, ASICS! PLEASE.

So I have been an ASICS guy for a very long time. They just seem to work for me. This shoe is no different. First of all the shoe looks great. It has nice styling and the colors are really nice. I chose the orange and black version and they look great. As for function: I really like the lace system and the lace sleeve that allows you the ability to tuck in the extra length so they aren't flopping around hitting your ankles. I also like the ease of adjustment this system provides. On my last run I had both shoes too tight and it was literally seconds to make a quick adjustment. The shoes have no break in period at all. Out of the box they felt comfortable yet very stable. The cushioning is nice (I am a bigger guy at around 195 pounds) I also have knee issues so ... Had a pair of previous Asics trail runners and thought the lugs and grip on the trails were bar none, one of the best even when in wet conditions, which is super confident and inspiring. The fit is good and comfortable, no real issues with it. The lacing system is interesting. I haven't had any issues yet with them and lockdown is adequate. I think Soloman still makes better quick lace systems. The ONLY thing is the tongue on the shoe is HUGE and so unnecessary, can you please make the tongue smaller for future models, please, please, please!

The Asics Trabuco Max was my most recent venture and after 260hrs in them, I can say they are the single most comfortable swiss army knife shoe I've worn to date. From heavy clinic duty/hours to FIT interval sprint training on uneven ground, the Trabuco Max has consistently performed above all expectations. Fit, true to size. Comfort, all day, even with a 30lb load over 8 hours. Heel-to-toe: slight drop, which I prefer and have found easier on my back. Grip - ... Over 500 miles through the desert on the Pacific Crest Trail. These shoes were perfect for the desert. The top mesh was breathable but not so much to let a lot of sand and dirt into the shoe. The MAX cushioning was very comfortable on the rocky trail portions. The speed lacing worked great and tucked nicely into the tongue up under my gaiters and stayed snug all day.One issue I had was after around mile 100 the toe cap folded in and would not pop back up but it did not cause any toe issues since I had sized up my shoe size. After mile 450 I compared my Asics shoe condition (tread life and over all condition of the top of the shoe) to the large amounts of Hoka's and Altra's. My Asics still had about 50% of their tread life left while the other brands were around ... MoreOver 500 miles through the desert on the Pacific Crest Trail. These shoes were perfect for the desert. This shoe was the dark horse on the PCT. I will continue to rely on Asics throughout my hike.
I'm new to trail running, mainly road running in the past, but wanted a pair of trainers with max cushioning as I suffer with sciatica. So far I'm very pleased with Trabuco Max. Very comfortable and fit is excellent. Not fussed about the sports laces, but they aren't causing me any problems. Usual excellent service from Ascis Outlet. Second pair of running shoes bought this year from them. Good prices and good service. What more could you ask for.
Pros: Fantastic weight/cushion ratioGreat width and secure fit for a medium footTop notch traction in snow, mud, scree, silt, rockGood breathabilityFair price point for what you getGuidsole does make a difference for meCons: Funny tongue shape and too thin for speed laces that hurt the top of my foot. After 100mi a 1.5" section of upper midsole separated from the mesh upper and needed to be reglued (base midsole has not separated)Toe cap crinkles and would be better if it was a traditional solid capI swapped the speed laces with flat laces and added 1 more set of eyelets to the top of the chain and now the lockdrown is superb and no more bruised top of my feet on long runs. I would suggest either make a thicker tonge like salomons or skip the speed lace ... Have just finished my first run with 16km (10mi) uphill on gravel and trail. My first pair of trail shoes ever, so cannot compare directly to other trail shoes. Compared to my Mizuno Wave Rider Neo 2 they feel a bit slow, but those are semi-fast pavement/asphalt shoes, so as expected. The Trabucos are VERY comfortable and not too soft insole wise so they do not feel too plushy and dead slow. They are however super soft and bouncy from the midsole. Great grip. Stable as well. All in all a very comfortable and good shoe, but I did not get the «WOW»-feeling from my first run.I have seen reviews that people are not happy with the lock down and that the ankle area feels loose. Same experience here, but the shoes did not slip while running. In fact I could not notice ... Same experience here, but the shoes did not slip while running. In fact I could not notice the issue during the run. The problem for me however was that a lot of debris and small «stones» managed to find the way inside the shoes while running, due to the loose fit. I have never experienced that much debris, it was quit noticeable and annoying during the run.I will try to tighten it more next time, but I am afraid it will feel too tight. The problem is that the opening is too big because the lace holes are too much in the front. They should have made one more set of holes further back/down.
