As the summery has stated, I kinda bricked my wrt-32x with one of the opensource OS's (I will fix it someday). So, I decided to just buy a middle of the road model. Came across this hidden/under rated monster. So many wonderful features I will probably never use. But I am blown away by it.Pro's: duel WAN config available, WAN/LAN 10/100/1000 full duplex, the real time data and logged historical data it provides, very easy to use interface/friendly, and the STABILITY.... I could go on and on...Con's: I cannot find anyThis device is by far my fav router I have worked on/owned... For a "Home" router, at this price point, just amazing.

10/05/22-This is my first ASUS router. I wish that I had found them several years ago, because I love this router's range and speed. My signal strength stays at 100% since the setup on 09/21/22. Set up was easy for me. I followed the instructions on the quick start guide very closely and was finished with the setup within 30-45 minutes. I really love the interface of the mobile App. I can see current Wi-Fi traffic, internet speed, all settings, and can reboot the router from anywhere in the home. I've experienced a wireless reboot feature with AT&T's Smart Home Manager App, but my mother has never experienced that and I think that she's going to like it. I had been previously using an all in one combo AC1900 Nighthawk modem/router. The wifi was pretty spotty upstairs in the house until I got this Asus wifi router. I chose it after much research and deliberation, based on price, performance and reviews (had to order, was not stocked locally). What a big difference! Using the old AC1900 strictly set as a modem, and dedicated router, I went from getting 10% of my paid speed over wifi on my phone to actual speed of my ISP! Proof is in the photo. As long as you are okay with it standing upright and looking funny, it is totally worth it.

I bought this router to form an AiMesh network. I have had as n RT-AV68U for several years. The number of devices we use with our be wifi has increased and we are using some at a greater distance from the single ones location. Performance was not so good at times at the other end of the house. So I decided the new router would become the main touter and the older one would be a node. I updated the firmware on the old one, then removed it and connected the new RT-AC86U. I used the Android App as my setup tool. That was very simple and the process proceeded with no issues at all. Well done ASUS!I placed the old one near the other end of the house and followed the AiMesh instructions. Once again I used the App as my tool. Again, setup was simple and the node came ... Again, setup was simple and the node came online with no problems.I have used both the App on my phone and the web browser based interface for checking on operations. Both sre easy to use. Both show me which devices are connected to the main router or to the node. The portable devices switch seamlessly between the RT-AC86U and the RT-AC68U. Performance is now much better with the node now sharing the load. I am quite pleased.
Bought this to replace an old netgear 5ghz router that died in a thunderstorm. In one year of use I've only had to physically power cycle it once when the wifi wouldn't connect. Other than that it's been working perfectly. Coverage is wayyy better than I expected. The router sits on the ground floor of the house and the old netgear wouldn't connect on 5ghz when you were in the additions basement, which has double thick concrete and block walls to go through. This Asus doesn't have a problem and gets 85% signal where the other wouldn't even connect. The 2.4 works great too when outside and will go farther than I need it. It's handy and can tell you if an app is doing stuff that it shouldn't be doing. I'm thinking of getting a second one to use as a mesh network for the downstairs pc, htpc, Sim racing rig and other stuff just to have the hardwired ports with ac wireless since some of the other stuff isn't ac.If you read this far and are still thinking of whether or not to get it, just get it already, you won't be disappointed!
I received new ASUS WiFi router from ASUS store online. 3 ASUS technicians and a supervisor could not connect the AiMesh node to another ASUS router. It was escalated to upper level tech support, who never responded. Later learned from another ASUS agent, it was not escalated. ASUS use to make great products and provide awesome service.
Let me start off by saying I spent a lot of time researching routers, reading reviews and deciding just how much router I really needed. Through my research this router appeared to be on many top 10 lists. Finally I decided to give it a shot since I didnt want to break the bank on some of the higher end routers. Wow!! I love this router! Very easy setup and the range is excellent. My house is a little over 2400sqft and theres no dead zones with this Asus. My router is positioned on my desk in the front of my house. I can finally use the 5ghz band in the back of the house without drop outs from lost of connection. I couldnt say the same about my previous Belkin 802.11n router. I have a 200mbps internet plan from Spectrum. I ran a speed test on my iPhone 7 in the back ... I couldnt say the same about my previous Belkin 802.11n router. I have a 200mbps internet plan from Spectrum. I ran a speed test on my iPhone 7 in the back of my back yard and still pulled 90-100mbps. My Xbox One X, which is in the back of my house, always seems to pull the full 200mbps and most devices pull at least 170 inside the house. Ive ran 4K content on Netflix on 3 different Firesticks and streamed music on my iPhone with no delay. The USB 3.0 port works like a charm. I have a hard drive I yanked out of a MacBook Pro 2007 version back when I upgraded the hard drive years ago. I threw a $3 case on it and turned it into an external HD. I still use the hard drive as a backup drive for my Macs. I have videos on the hard drive Id like to view on my Samsung SUHD TV. Before this router I couldnt do it. The tv wouldnt recognize the drive because of the Mac partition format when I plugged it directly into the USB port on the tv and using the USB port on my Belkin or Arris TG1672G (provided by Spectrum) didnt work either. The tv wouldnt see the drive from either router. Now with this Asus, not only does the tv see the drive wirelessly when the drive is plugged into the USB port on the Asus, but it streams with no delay and lets me pan through videos with very little delay (about one second). I havent spent any time tweaking the settings yet but after 2 weeks Im extremely satisfied with the performance of this router for the price. As for looks, aesthetically I think it looks nice black and red. Its a little big and can only stand up so its not wall mountable but that doesnt bother me. Its no taller or wider than the Arris TG1672G provided to me by Spectrum to serve as my modem/router combo. Hope this helps!
The router seems great, nice and powerful radios, AIMesh was easy to setup with two of them, the firmware is gorgeous. You setup a VPN easily, get everything going super quick. Even the phone app is awesome. Everything seems to go great. At first. Then you realize that you keep dropping wifi connection every few minutes. It comes right back up after a second, so for web browsing, did you even notice? Oh but you notice it gaming, when your lag kills you. No worries, you just hardwire. You then notice that your connection speed is running at less than half what it should when you test it, even while hardwired in. Your traffic monitor is showing nothing except your box is pulling traffic of any worth, so you think "Ah well, probably just a lot of people on in my ... Your traffic monitor is showing nothing except your box is pulling traffic of any worth, so you think "Ah well, probably just a lot of people on in my neighborhood;" but then you test it directly on your modem, and realize that on a 500mbit connection, you are only getting 220mbit max.It goes downhill from there. Your wireless speaker system? When it actually manages to connect, it drops off after a minute or two, and none of your devices see one another. Spotify keeps cutting out. Streaming on your FireTV is spotty, full of buffering, even from local servers on your own network. Your IoT stuff has given up trying to connect. You keep struggling through, cause hey, it's ASUS, they wouldn't make crap, right? But time and again, you go through every setting you can find, or think of. You factory reset everything so foten, the process becomes rote. You even try custom firmware. Then as you dig through forum posts, you see that there are known flaws in Broadcom SoC, problems in all releases of the FW that aren't fixed, settings you simply have no way of controlling, and a support desk that never responds. After dozens of hours of wresting with this PoS, you give up, return it, and get something else. Something that works out of the box.tl;dr: Save your money, buy Netgear. Firmware may not be as sexy looking, radios not quite as beefy, but it's solid and reliable, and you get 90 days of free phone tech support.
Only had this a few days but so far so good. My old router was the Tmobile version of the ASUS AC68U and while it’s still going strong after 3 years of heavy use, it isn’t able to get firmware updates for some reason. I didn’t want to mess around with reflashing the Tmobile firmware to the stock ASUS version so I bought this newer unit instead. CR indicates that outdated firmware is a security risk and with all that’s going on these days with cyberattacks I didn’t want to take chances. Also the concept of free for life malware protection built into this router is appealing. So as for performance - it seems to be a bit better than the old ASUS. Also the concept of free for life malware protection built into this router is appealing. So as for performance - it seems to be a bit better than the old ASUS. Speeds don’t really seem to be much different (100 mbps) but I am not seeing those occasional lags I was seeing with the old unit where I’d get some occasional buffering. Most obvious in Webex meetings with video.I am concerned about overall durability since I’ve read the reviews stating early failures of these units on the 2.4 band. Those seem to be mostly older reviews though. So I’ve got an AC Infinity fan on this unit to keep it cooler. It does get quite warm otherwise as did the old unit. I also upgraded to the latest firmware immediately and plugged the router into an APC backup with surge protection.I am hoping this unit is at least as consistent over the long term as my old ASUS. I like the form factor of these units and the ASUS interface overall. If it fails, I hope it occurs within 2 weeks. Fingers crossed!
My last ASUS router lasted over 10 years so when it finally quit working, I picked up this model after doing some casual research. Set up was quick and painless and had zero issues for 3 weeks then ran into a problem. Most of my network is wired and WIFI is generally used for my phone when home and nothing else, but when I used my wireless for streaming to a Roku, the router overheated and kept dropping connections for the entire network.A little more research hinted at a thermal issue and when I discovered several cooling solutions for this particular router on Amazon that just confirmed it for me. I bought one of those cooler systems which was 2 small fans that stick to the back of the router and connect via the usb connection which seemed to fix the problem.I ...
