The VM540ML is amazing. It is truly another class compared to my previous ATVM95ML. After playing minutes, hour, days i can conclude that the cart is truly performer. Voices & instruments are noticeable. Mid & high tones are pure and dynamic. The cart produces less surface noise during inter track gaps and less than perfect records. Stereo separation and precision up to innermost grooves remained unchanged. Prices may have increased but VM540ML is still no match in its price range compared with other MM carts in the market. You will be able to hear the difference in sound when using VM540ML. Enjoy the music.

Buy the premounted combo. Read below for installation tip.

Bought for a Crosley C200 which looks like a AT-120 just all plastic and missing a few features.First thing, I bought the cartridge by itself thinking I could save myself $50 bucks by mounting it myself. I have never done it before and all I had were some printed out 2 point protractors and youtube videos to show me how. Over the course of 2 frustrating days I tried to figure out stuff like overhang and where on the headshell the darn thing goes. I kept getting a 20% Right channel being lower inbalance all the time. Almost wanted to send it back. Then i remembered the packaging came with a plastic fake headshell to which the cartridge was attached. All the pictures online I could find of the thing already mounted on a proper headshell showed it in in the same exact position it came mounted on the plastic headshell. I just placed the plastic headshell over the current headshell with the VM540, and put the screws dead center over where it was mounted. Lucky the plastic headshell has a hole and a peg were the screws go so there is no guess work, after I figured that out, I just aligned it using the protractor and the imbalance was almost corrected, but still there. Just to trouble shoot I increased the tracking force from 2.0g to 2.5 and then to 3.0. I wanted to be fancy and have a low tracking cartridge, but it appears this also helped to fix the imbalance. Probably my entry level table showing some of its limits. Seemed my turntable needed a higher tracking force to get that left channel going sufficiently. Hope this helps and saves someone some time. I am never again mounting a cartridge myself again. After i bought the headshell I think I saved like $20 overall. What was i thinking? Always get the mounted option or pay someone to do it. 2 days of frustration and i probably scratched a record or two in the process. Thank me later.

Since the M97Xe is no longer an option, I'd say the VM540ML represents the current price to performance king amongst MM cartridges. One can find a lot said about this cartridge. So I'll add the two things that stand out to know ahead of time. 1) The mounting screws provided do not work well. When one places the screw heads facing down and the nuts on the top of the headshell, there isn't any room to even get the supplied flat head screw driver squarely on the screwheads. The red body actually blocks the screwheads partially. Its very strange. 2) This thing REQUIRES low capacitance. The recommended range is 100 - 200 pF. I started out around 320 pF and there was way too much high frequency emphasis. I took a frequency response measurement and I had +10dB above 6Khz. ... MoreSince the M97Xe is no longer an option, I'd say the VM540ML represents the current price to performance king amongst MM cartridges. Great value for money!

This cartridge and stylus offers amazing value for money. Tracking is extremely accurate with sibilance and inner groove distortion a thing of the past. Wide stereo separation and accurate extraction of detail from the grooves. The pre mounted cartridge came factory aligned to the 52mm overhang required for my technics so I didn't need to make any adjustment.

In my opinion best cartridge for the money-in the right system

I have used many phono cartridges in my Rega turntable. Denon DL110, DL160 and DL301ii; Ortofon 2m Blue; Goldring E3; Audio Technica VM95EN, ML and SH; and Nagaoka MP200. Also, many years ago an Audio Technica OC9ML. The OC9ML had the best combination of tracking and detail but was a little shy in the bass. Plus, the stylus in not replaceable. The Nagaoka is the closest I came to getting the sound I wanted, but it still has an elliptical stylus and is not the last word in tracking ability. I had hoped that the VM95ML or SH would be the answer I was looking for: good tracking, good detail and accurate reproduction. Unfortunately, the VM95EN sounded the best to me, and the Nagaoka was better. After reading a couple of rave reviews about the VM540ML I decided to give it a try. Wow. This was the answer. Its response is not perfectly flat. It has a rising response from about 7khz to 14khz, topping out at maybe 3db higher at 14,000. I can't hear that high anyway. So I am left with a cartridge that provides detail but is really well balanced from the bass through the low treble. In my system, it sounds great. (Rega with RB220 tonearm, Darlington Labs MM-6 phono pre, Cambridge Audio CXA60 amplifier, Elac DBR62 speakers, SVS SB2000Pro sub). YMMV.

Top Notch Sound Quality. Hard to better at ANY price.

Beautifully presented in its box, and fairly easy to install, but no captive nuts so one has to use the nuts provided. As soon as I'd set the tracking weight and bias, I lowered the cartridge onto the LP. Wow, the background hiss, pops and crackles have all but disappeared. Then the sound. Well, that is quite astonishing too. It reveals so much texture of each instrument and the depth layers of the recording. It is so profound, that sometimes the recordings sound as if they were a re-mastered version. I just had to go through so many LPs to marvel at the difference. The impression was that the sound was probably as good as some Hi End Moving coil designs, maybe even better... The Phono pre-amp I'm using is a passive design along with other DIY Hi End level equipment ... MoreBeautifully presented in its box, and fairly easy to install, but no captive nuts so one has to use the nuts provided. Unmatched in it's price range
18 August 2024

Sounds very, very good. When it's price is taken into consideration it is the absolute best available. While it would be nice to have threaded inserts for mounting the lack of them makes this more versatile. An aluminum body would've been nice but that's really picking nits in this class. Bottom line is you will not find a better cartridge in the under $300 price range... period.

I have an AT LP-120 and have upgraded the stock stylus 3-4 times and this BY FAR blows the rest out of the water. I hate this whole whySpend $$$ on a new stylus when you should just buy a new turntable. Yes, this stylus cost about the same as another LP-120 but if you were to get one of these for the LP-120 you wouldn’t be disappointed. It elevates the LP-120 to sound like an entirely different turntable in my opinion. You also get so much for your money in this stylus as others like it can range in the $$$$ ($1K plus!) Either playing those your Hi-Fi or headphones the sounds amazing. You can hear things so clearly, maybe hear things you never had before, and tell the difference of sounds that sounded pushed together.
