I bought this item to make life easier in my busy household (2yr old and pregnant wife). I had this product (3rd generation and WiFi bridge) for little over 2 years, while I had it, it made life easy on a day to day even though the bridge would need to be reset every other month. But as of yesterday, my 3rd generation smart lock ceased to operate. The mechanisms and components failed to perform its basic function of opening and locking the door. Today I spoke with a representative and voiced my comments and concerns that their product is cheap and ultimately is an expensive obsolete product. In short I just wanted an exchange, item for item. The customer representative lacked empathy and could only offer me a 30% discount, which I found insulting knowing how ... MoreI bought this item to make life easier in my busy household (2yr old and pregnant wife). So buyer be aware, this item sounds great but it will break down on you in a short time. In all honesty you’re better sticking to your original key lock. I only wish I could mail this obsolete junk back to this company.

I have bought and used 2 versions of August smart locks, 3rd gen and 4th gen. I have no issue with 3rd gen and highly recommend. However, 4th gen has been nothing but a nightmare. Set up is relatively easy, even though it took us about an hour instead of 20mins with the 3rd gen. I bought it in March 2022 and it's now Sept 2022 and I have had to change the battery 3 times!! As of 2 days ago, 4th gen wifi disconnected and bluetooth disbaled on the lock and the smart lock does not work anymore. Called August and got someone on the phone; went through all the troubleshooting of factory reset on the phone app, the lock itself and tested on a different phone in case if it was an apple phone issue. I honestly did not want the 4th gen lock again but unfortunately that's what I bought so that's what I'll get again...having to spend more money on replacing those expensive batteries every month then for the wifi to probably fail agian. I HIGHLY DON'T RECOMMEND buying this piece of crap 4th Gen. Stick to 3rd gen that comes with wifi bridge that's plugged in to the outlet at all time until August have a better solution for this 4th frustrating gen smart lock that's not so smart.

I just replaced my first-gen August lock with a new wi-fi 4th-gen model, together with the wireless keypad. They both work perfectly and are a huge improvement over the old model. The only problem I encountered was with the animated installation instructions. They took a great concept and turned it into trial-and-error frustration. First, the documentation never clearly showed the orientation of the base plate. I discovered it would not work if the wrong faces the door. Next, although the pictures show the new-style adapter, the text describes the old adapter (“install with the small nub facing up”). Third, the adapter selection chart is for the old adapters, and will not work for the new ones. I bought my first august lock over a year ago. Still works to this day. I simply wanted the other color and gifted my original to my mom, who also loves it. After a lot of research on smart locks I felt this was the best option as you can still use your house key if the batteries die, though the app warns you when the batteries are dying. It makes leaving the house convenient. I can do a few doors down and leave my keys at home. Plus the auto-lock function gives peace of mind that wasn’t there in the past. After a chosen amount of time if the door isn’t opened it’ll lock itself, as the name implies. You can also allow guest access to friends and family, while also putting limits on how long and when it applies. There’s much more this lock can do! It took maybe 15 minutes tops. Honestly, I can’t imagine not having my smart lock. I seriously love this thing! If you’re debating whether it’s worth it or not, it’s worth it. So much so that I didn’t mind buying it twice. It’s an amazing lock that actually works with combining simplicity with functionality, all while looking good.
I have a few issues. One - not having an exterior control is annoying. I used to have a key pad and now I am forced to use a deadbolt with my August lock. The way the controls work, I am constantly locked out and forced to unlock with my phone or a key. I wish there was a lock and unlock button on the front. Two - leads me to my second issue. The Auto Unlock requires you to leave a certain perimeter before it engages. I use the auto lock (because I can’t lock it from the outside without getting out a key or phone) and so if I take the garbage out or run to my car, it auto locks but then can’t auto - unlock. I with I could set the perimeter radius myself but I can’t. Or I wish the autolock worked based on the same radius. Three - the autolock is not very intelligent. ... MoreI have a few issues. For me, it locks when the door is open, which is super annoying. Then my young kid tries to close the door and the deadbolt slams into the frame. Again, locking based on distance away would be better. Overall, I regret buying this lock. But it was pretty expensive, I already installed it, and I threw out the packaging long ago. So I guess I’m stuck.
Both the august lock and the Connect Wi-Fi bridge stopped working after about 2 years. The august lock stopped calibrating correctly so would not turn the right amount to lock/unlock the door properly. It’s such a poor design since it tries to “understand” how much to turn. It would be a lot simpler to just turn 90 degrees. The Connect also stopped working and no longer connects to the lock so is useless. Both of these seem to be common problems from what I’ve read on the Internet. The Connect Wi-Fi Bridge can also only work with 1 lock, which is also a poor design. So you have to buy a Connect for every lock! 2 years is the shortest life of all of my electronic products, especially for one as expensive as this one. The lock is great particularly for renters since it installs in the existing traditional deadbolt. The keypad is a great additional accessory to consider because taking out the phone to unlock door all the time would get annoying. This system though is not without its flaws and for those that consider the flaws and come up with the remedies, this is a great option. Flaws: 1. The wifi is 2.5g and for households with only 5g wifi there seems to eat through the battery significantly faster. 2. The keypad is great, but there is a 2ish second lag before it can communicate with the lock and open the door. It can feel like eternity but it def works and you get used to it. Literally like one one thousand...two one thousand...and you're in. 3. I just went with rechargeable lithium phosphate batteries ($60ish for 4) and I have to swap every 2-3months but it works. If you get rechargeables, get the lithium phosphate, it's for photography and delivers a higher power? There are some complains online about rechargeables not working well and August themselves recommend against rechargeables but I've had no issue. Overall this is a great system. One you can find a good deal on occasionally. Just know what you're getting and you won't be dissapointed.
From the time I bought my lock, two and a half years ago, it has never performed as advertised. I have an Android phone and it took a call to Support and switching to my iPad before I could even get the lock connected the first time. Since then, it is rare for the lock to open automatically which is the main reason I purchased the lock. Battery longevity has diminished dramatically over time. From May 2020 to May 2022, I averaged six to seven weeks of battery power. Since May 2022 my batteries only last from 24 to 30 days. Finally today, my door was unlocked when I came home and wouldn't rotate. After a lengthy Support call, I was advised the motor was broken and my only recourse was to buy a new lock. If you use Android devices and don't mind replacing batteries frequently and having to manually open the door with the app this is the lock for you. At least I was able to discourage a good number of friends, relatives and colleagues from making the mistake I did in buying this lock.
I've had this lock for 6 months now which really is what is needed for a product like this to review. I have it connected on the 2.4 WIFI of a Unifi access point and it communicates great as long as I only want to control it with my phone. As I do not have any apple devices that stay at my house I can not connect it to Homekit and control it locally everything has to go to their cloud service then back for control even on the same network. Their Home-kit connection is Bluetooth only so the apple device has to be close to the lock permanently. Because of this constant back and fourth the wifi card is constantly pinging their cloud service causing the batteries to drain much faster than they should. 6 months and 2 sets of batteries and they are the special CR123A ... MoreI've had this lock for 6 months now which really is what is needed for a product like this to review. Not sure if the Bridge would help solve this issue but wasting money on batteries is not fun. The app also doesn't give you the battery level until it tells you that the batteries are almost dead which isn't helpful because you can't keep track of any information as to what could be causing the issue. If you use Home Assistant to automate your home this lock isn't for you. Ever since August updated the way you log into their website to control the lock or get information about it Home Assistant can't log in or wont stay connected. The bigger pro version that is Z-wave ready might be better but I wouldn't go with this one again.
