I immediately opened the shampoo bottle when I got it to have a smell. It did not smell how I was expecting it to smell. It kind of smells piney like pine cones. Really earthy and herby. The smell also kind of reminds me of a nappy rash cream that comes in a white tube that I used on my kids. Not pleasant. The smell does die down once the hair is dry and isn't as strong but it's still not nice. I then showered and washed my hair straight away using the shampoo and it is a thick consistency and a pale milky/creamy yellow colour. I used a 50cent sized amount into the palm of my hands as I have shoulder length hair but it is super thick hair. I rubbed both of my hands together then applied it to my scalp and hair and worked it into a lather. It foams up really well. I then rinsed my hair and it felt really clean but a little bit knotty as it usually does before conditioning and also was squeaky which I have never experienced before. My hair felt horrible and stripped. I have now used the shampoo a few more times and so far my hair has had no improvements or change. I will continue to use the rest of the bottle and see how my hair goes. I have also used a hair dryer after using this product including the conditioner and leave-in treatment and my hair still feels really dry and frizzy. It takes a bit longer to straighten too. The ends of my hair are really dry and my hair has never felt so bad. So far because of the smell of the product and the way it makes my hair feel I would not purchase this myself. I do have course, thick, wavy, frizzy hair and I do straighten it but it does say on the back of the bottle that it is suitable for all hair types and textures. There is limited information on the bottle. Most of it is in another language or it has a big list of ingredients. It does says it contains Aveda's own pure-fume (meaning their own perfume) which contains certified organic ylang-ylang, rose, marjoram and other pure flower and plant essences. I've also done separate reviews for the Conditioner and Leave-in treatment which are similar to this review. Same smell, feeling etc. It has a 100% post-consumer HDPE bottle which is recyclable. Shampoo has to be used with 24 months from opening. The shampoo is made in the USA. I'm not sure who this shampoo would be ideal for because it says it's for all hair types and textures but it left my hair feeling super dry and unmanageable.

This shampoo has literally saved my hair. I am late 50s, and recently my long hair had started to look incredibly dull and lifeless. I wash and blowdry it nearly every day but I was still shocked by the change. I was considering cutting most of it off but then I tried a travel sample of this Aveda shampoo. It made my hair so full of life and soft, I thought at first it was the water as I was in Spain but this continued once back in the UK. I agree it is a costly product but also that you only need to use a little especially if you wash your hair every day. I combine it with the conditioner and the Smooth Infusion also by Aveda and I once again am happy with my hair and don't feel the need to cut 3 inches off. Highly recommended.

Best shampoo for dry damaged hair

My hair has been uncontrollably dry and frizzy since the start of the pandemic. So dry I could not get a comb or brush through my locks. I was so fed-up with my hair that I would just tie it up. A friend gave me a sample of Botanical Repair shampoo, conditioner and strengthening leave-in treatment. I cried after my first use - my hair was smooth, shiny and I could put a comb through it for the first time in years. I looked like a completely different person. My Husband immediately commented on how healthy my hair looks. I immediately ordered a full size shampoo, conditioner and strengthening treatment and I have been so satisfied with the status of my hair. I highly recommend it!

Disappointed
22 December 2022

I have used Aveda hair products for over a year (Botanical Repair Strengthening Shampoo, conditioner and leave-in conditioner, and the Chamomile Shampoo); my hair were clean and easy to detangle, that's for sure. Now I am super disappointed because I got an allergic reaction on my scalp and my face skin due to it. Why? Because Aveda promotes being Environtal friendly, Green and using natural ingredients, well, this is all lies. I analyzed the ingredients: Phenoxyethanol, being a synthetic preservative which, according to the ANSM, denounces its liver toxicity and potentially harmful effect on reproduction and many other inconveniences. Sodium Cocoyl isethionate which is terrible for the environment (so much for a company that says to be environmentally friendly). Sodium Cocoyl isethionate which is terrible for the environment (so much for a company that says to be environmentally friendly). I am not going to write all list, but I found a minimum of 8 ingredients that are harmful to human health and terrible for the environment. On top of that, the prices are insanely high! I usually don't mind paying more to get a higher quality, but companies lie to you about being natural and green, and that makes me mad. As of today, I am still recovering from scalp irritation and skin allergy; my hair are also worst than before I used any of these products.

Good strengthening conditioner
26 February 2023

The Aveda Botanical Repair Conditioner is a good repairing and strengthening conditioner. For my hair it’s much better than the shampoo from the range as it’s more hydrating. This leaves hair very soft, smoothed, detangled and greatly reduces my frizz. It has the same strong herbal scent as the shampoo but I don’t find it lasts on my hair once rinsed out. It’s very lightweight, leaves no build up on hair and I find I can leave my hair longer between washes when using it. Personally I prefer a slightly more nourishing conditioner but it’s a great conditioner for strengthening especially for fine or more oily to normal to a little bit dry hair. Very dry hair types like mine may prefer a richer one. Overtime it really does improve the condition of hair.

Lovely natural shampoo

🙋‍♀️ I have dry and heat damaged medium long hair. It is not treated in any way. My hair is naturally wavy and it’s very thin/fine so it gets damaged and dry at the ends very easily. I use hair straightener almost daily.📦 The packagingThe product comes in a green plastic bottle with a "flip" opener. I wish it had a pump because I think those bottles are more convenient but this one works too.👀 The texture and looksThe shampoo has runny consistency, typical for a shampoo. It's blurry white color, so nothing unsurprising here. I used a teaspoon size for my shoulder length hair in first wash. It foamed up a lot and I feel it deep cleansed my hair and made my scalp and strands feel super clean and fresh. I like to do a second shampoo with a teeny dot of product, and it lathered up massively. It was easy to rinse it out of my hair.👃 The smellSmell is something I'm not a fan of in this product. It smells minty and of some other herb I cannot really pinpoint. Smells fresh but also reminds me a bit of a toothpaste smell (or dentist office). The smell persists after wash so you can smell it after drying your hair.🤔 My opinionThe shampoo is really nice. I paired it with a mask from the same line and my hair was really soft. My hair ends were really dry but now they feel soft and shiny. I still have few split ends but I think there's definitely less of them. My hair feels very healthy again.I absolutely love that this product is made from natural ingredients and vegan. If you're on a lookout for natural haircare, this is definitely it!The smell is the only thing I'm not a fan of in this product. But the benefits I get from this shampoo outway the clinical smell.#lykoinflutester #aveda

NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR DAMAGE REMEDY
9 June 2022

Every time I go to my Aveda salon, they use the Botanical Repair line on my hair unless I kindly ask them to use anything else. Today, my new colorist only used the conditioner from this line, yet it is the only thing I can smell 9 hours later. Unlike other Aveda scents, this "pure-fume" doesn't fade. I strongly dislike the scent, but find it especially concerning that it unnaturally lingers until one or two washings. It's not a great idea to come from a hair coloring service and want to rewash my hair immediately. I'm twitching right now, wondering if I'll make it through the night. The Damage Remedy line is my holy grail and the best companion to Aveda hair coloring services on my coarse hair. Please don't eliminate the Damage Remedy line (restructuring shampoo, intensive restructuring treatment, and daily hair repair). Even if you made the Botanical Repair pure-fume less noxious, none of the line's products have made my hair feel good the way Damage Remedy does. Botanical Repair may work for some people, but I don't recommend it if you have coarse hair or are sensitive to fragrance.

Smell is stronger than OGs
2 January 2023

I've been using Aveda for almost 20 years. Ever since they got bought out, the smells have gotten stronger. Smells used to be strong but wear off quickly. I can't use the shampoo, conditioner with the treatment together it's so strong and smells for days. I have to use my olaplex or Nutriplenish treatment to balance the smell. I wish it weren't like this as my nose, as well as my husband's have always loved Aveda. Until now. I'll keep using it because it works well, but I really ask Aveda to calm the perfume down. It's what has separated them from the other salon brands. Please keep it that way!!! Calm the scents down!! I took the hair quiz and was matched to this product. I was using their rose mint product before but my hair was getting so tangled from it and falling out like crazy. I noticed a HUGE difference using this product for 3 weeks now. My brush is no longer snagging as much in my wet hair - it takes me half the time to brush through it now. My hair is also no longer falling out by the clumps but just a normal amount now. I've noticed little to no hair left behind on my bed where before it was so much. My husband has even noticed less hair around the wood floors!! I was so scared by the other reviews but I think taking the quiz really helped match me to an appropriate product. Works well, but smell is too much, get back to the OG Aveda!

I've been using Aveda for almost 20 years. Their scents that disappear after a while have always been what separates them from other perfumed salon brands. Recently since being bought out, I've noticed stronger perfumes smells that linger for days. Unfortunately, I left Aveda, but I'm back because the smells, though strong, are at least more pleasant than others. But seriously, when I use the botanical repair shampoo/conditioner/treatment trio, my hair smells like it for DAYS. Not what I loved about Aveda. I wish they'd let some scent go and go calmer.
