The overlays are nice to keep the tiles in place. The new boards provide a slight variation from the original boards but the changes are not too dramatic. The center star now has predetermined tile colors instead of blank files. The outer stars are the same as in the original boards.

The new player boards are very nice options, changing up the game without messing with the core of game play. The plastic frames are a soft, vacuum-formed clear plastic that is very flexible, but serviceable. If the frames had been made of harder acrylic, I'd give this expansion 5 stars.

The item description is clear that this is not an essential expansion to the great game of Azul: Summer Pavilion. It is nice to have new boards that offer an alternative layout and scoring method. The trays were the main reason I purchased the expansion. I expected them to be rigid plastic (like a CD jewel case). They are not. Instead they are made of thin flexible plastic akin to Zen Bins. While they do work, they are not the classy upgrade I was looking for. Additionally, it seems that the scoreboard tray was not taken into account when the box was designed as the lid does not sit level but is raised slightly. For the price, this is an okay addition, but far from necessary.
Good add-ons if you want to ever so slightly mix it up. The overlays are great and good quality.
The Azul "thin box" expansions add nice features to an already good game. I am a bit disappointed that, again, the very useful overlays that help hold the tiles in place are sold separately. For some gamers with manual dexterity difficulties, simply placing the tile could disturb all their previous efforts and reduce their enjoyment of the game. Whereas the overlay makes playing the game much easier and far more enjoyable.
We got this to play outside. The plastic inlays keep the tiles in place, so stuff isn't blown by the wind. The gameplay changes are minimal but perfect since it mixes things up a bit to make the game feel fresh, but it's still the same summer pavilion we all know and love.
If you are a casual Azul Summer Pavilion player you don't necessarily need this, but if this game comes out at every game night this expansion is great to add variety and new challenges to each game if play has become formulaic
I need these overlays for all my azul games, love the extra scoring rules and the overlays make it so much nicer to place the tiles.
This expansion is really great Exceeded all my expectations! Love it! Made a new dimension for already one of my best games in collection!
