A Disappointment and a Keeper

Mammut is a company that I love, like, and hate. No other company exists in the space of my outdoor equipment consumer heart. I love Mammut's rain gear and hard shells. I have Mammut hiking shoes I treasure but boots that, no matter what, I can't find in the correct size. (I've sent back more of Mammut's footwear than I care to count.) I love Mammut's outdoor clothing, which might run a size smaller than I normally wear or two sizes larger. This is my first Mammut pack, which was originally sold for a ridiculous price and that I picked up for a ridiculously low price. So the good part. If I were going out on a summer trail with just my water bladder, a rain coat, a few snacks, and a DSLR with a wide angle lens, this bag would be nice. The bag is well made. If I were going out on a summer trail with just my water bladder, a rain coat, a few snacks, and a DSLR with a wide angle lens, this bag would be nice. The bag is well made. It's very comfortable. It's a roomy 15L. The upper pocket, where you might store sunglasses and/or food, is a great size. The compartment at the front of the bag has lots of space. The frame and it's support system are comfortable. The hip belt and shoulder straps are comfortable, even for this 230 pound hiker. The bag meets all the minimum requirements. If those are what you're looking for, this bag is for you! However, if I'm going out in winter with that season's demanding list of items, this bag isn't going to meet my needs. And that's a disappointment.I pushed the capabilities of the pack on my first time out. Here's what I found. The bladder storage is in the bag's main compartment and uses a pocket to hold the bladder close to the frame. A valve exit is on the upper right shoulder of the bag, so you're limited to the valve and hose being on the right. The loops for the valve are small. I didn't love this. The bladder configuration has disaster written all over it. If a leak were to develop, there is no place for the water to go except into the bag's main compartment. There is no drain. The last thing I need is a bladder leaking all over my down coat if things go wrong, and, eventually, things always go wrong.Attaching trekking poles to the pack is frustrating. The top elastic loop is on the left side of the pack, with a single, standard loop on the left side of the pack's base. I found it very difficult to get both tips of my three-section Leki poles through the single lower loop and the cork uppers through the elastic loop so that the poles felt securely affixed to the pack. And so, as expected, the poles kept coming out of their holds. This was a HUGE hassle. I gave up carrying the poles after about 300 yards.I've never had a problem keeping poles affixed to other packs. Not being able to carry trekking poles feels like a significant design flaw. I've come to expect this feature on all of my packs. And did I mention things eventually going wrong? Loose trekking pole tips and bladders together never seem like a good idea.I brought along my ice kleets on this audition. These did a great job of bringing to light another of the bag's shortcomings: there is no way to attach things to the bag without the item flopping around, at least not using something designed to meet this requirement. My ice kleets are carried in a heavy, cloth bag with a drawstring and loop on the bag. On previous packs, I've used the loop as an attachment point. Alas, the Mammut bag does not have a way to attach the kleet bag... Unless you use one of the compression straps looped through the kleet bag. This is definitely not what the compression strap was meant for and, so, the solution is rather kludgey. If I had paid more for this pack, it would be going back. However, since I paid what I consider a low price for it, I'll use it in the summer when I often pick up rocks, take meat and cheese along for my hike, and seem to seek out rain. (I didn't get to try the pack's rain shell.) I really do love to be out in the rain. This pack will serve that purpose well, I hope.

Comfortable and good utility.

This is the second Women's Lithium 20 pack I have purchased. Plenty of pockets for easy access to gear. I especially like the cell phone pocket on the hip belt because it is secure and makes pulling the phone out for a photo easy. It is easily to attach snowshoes and an ice axe to the pack in cool weather and you can haul a ton of water when it is hot with the hydration bladder and water bottle pockets. The rain cover is a nice bonus. I have carried my first Lithium 20 through a lot of rough cross-country terrain and it is has held up well. I'm just seeing signs of wear on the first pack; so, I bought a new one that I'll start using once the first one wears out.

I like this backpack a lot. It't really lightwight and well constructed. When I tried it fully loaded, the weight transferred nicely on my hips with the hip belt. I appreciate this feature as hip belts are rare on such small bags. For reference, I am 5'3 and my back lenght is 16 1/4 and this backpack fits me perfectly. I ordered the blue one and it is a very dark navy that I like. I ended up returning this backpack because as it had been folded, I thought that it was foldable but it turns out it is not and you should not fold it according to the manufacturer (Mammut.) I will order another one and I'm still hesitating between the 20 liter and the 15 liter one. So far I have compared the 25 liter one and the 20 liter one. Excellent pack: comfortable & versatile!
6 July 2023

I spent a lot of time searching for the perfect pack for long day hikes and to use for traveling as a personal item to hold a laptop, etc. This pack has exceeded expectations. It's very functional with enough pockets but not too many. The phone pocket is very convenient. The water bottle pockets are large but secure. The removable hip belt is brilliant. I am now a Mammut fan and will always search for their bags first. However, I am certain this bag will stick with me for many years.

Fantastic dual-purpose backpack: urban and nature
9 June 2023

I hesitated a lot between the Lithium 15 and 20. I finally chose the Lithium 15 and I’m glad I did. THis backpack fits well a 5’3”” women. For reference, on the Mammut website they say its backlenght is 17 and my backlength is 16 &1/2 so it’s comfortable on my back. You can fit quite a lot in it: foirst aid kit, wind jacket, lunch, water and sport drinks, and miscellanous items women like to carry around. I absolutely love the fact that I can use the hipbelt to distribute the weight on my hips or remove it if I’m in an urban environment. I bought this backpack to replace an old one that I like to carry on short hikes or when I visit a city and I know I’ll walk a lot. I laready have a 33 l bag to travel or longer hikes. Good, light hiking backpack
23 May 2023

I really liked this backpack. It’s light and low profile. It was a bit big for my purpose because I also wanted to use it as a day bag. For a day bag it lacks organization. An inside pocket would be nice. This bag would be ideal for a 5 inch 3 to 5 inch 5 woman with a 17 inch torso. I ordered the blue one and it’s a deep blue with some black trimmings. It looks solid. I love the fact that the hip belt is removable. It makes the bag stowable especially on a plane.

Good, roomy backpack for women.

I like this backpack a lot. I haven’t taken it out yet but when I tried it fully loaded, the wight tranferred nicely on my hips with the hipbelt. I appreciate this feature as hipbelts are rare on such small bags. What they don’t tell you in the description is that it appears to be foldable although this is a feature that I like less as in my expreience foldable bags tend to sag either right away or as they get used; we’ll see n a few months what happens with this one. This is the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 stars. There is an internal pouch for your water bladder and another small pocket inside that the 25 l one lacks. Great stylish backpack for 2-3 days excursions
27 September 2023

The Mammut Lithium 40L is a great overall backpack for the 2-3 days excursions offering great style and quality build. I really liked that the backpack is adjustable back length. The backpack is also really light for its size, offering great back and hip support with lots of adjustments straps. The backpack contains a top compartment with 2 pockets which is great for quick and easy access. The main compartment is fairly spacious and is separated from the bottom compartment which can be opened to make one big compartment. The bottom compartment can be accessible with a zipper from the bottom. The only downside for the backpack is that the bottom compartment, is made with a material that is not very flexible, thus limits the storage for bulkier and heavy things to the ... MoreThe Mammut Lithium 40L is a great overall backpack for the 2-3 days excursions offering great style and quality build. Nice daypack but has design flaw...
3 June 2022

This Mammut Lithium 15L is a good day pack, comfortable to wear. The bottle mesh holders work well. They hold about maximum a 9cm diameter bottle, which is enough. Love the hiking poles holder. Useful for attaching other things like a jacket, towel or many other things. I don't like a waist belt unless for bigger packs. I am glad it is removable. Rain cover is useful. The bad...Why 3 stars? Well my biggest complaint is access to the items at the bottom of the pack. When it's full, you have to take everything out in order to access the items at the bottom. I wish the zippers went down more to have a clamshell opening. That way it would be much easier to take things in and out. This I think is a major design flaw.Another design flaw, the pack tapers in towards the ... MoreThis Mammut Lithium 15L is a good day pack, comfortable to wear. The bottle mesh holders work well. Why not just make it the same width all the way down? The zipper seems a bit fragile, we'll see over time.My other 12L pack has a bit more room than this Mammut Lithium 15L. Is it really 15L?It is very close to being the perfect day pack.

Very Happy - Great fit for 5’2”
23 January 2023

I love this backpack. I wear it around the house just to have a carry around hug. The waist straps actually sit on my waist (I’m 5’2”). Amazing fit. One of the reasons I bought it was because it checked the “carry-on size” box. Actually- I was able to fit this under the seat in front of me when fully stuffed so it counts as a personal item and you could bring a carry-on bag as well! I also love the mini Fanny pack that is built into the belt! I brag about it.This is a perfect day pack. Definitely can’t fit a laptop or a bunch of gear though. But now I know what 15L of backpack is!
