Upon looking down at the ring burr and conical burr, I noticed that the the grounded coffee was caked all around the circumference of ring burr and the conical grinding burr. It was obvious that any fresh beans in the hopper above could not reach the grinding components. I searched for the Baratza u-tube video and followed their troubleshooting technique and cleaned the unit. While cleaning, I noticed that the brush they furnish is not well suited for entering the small plastic rectangle discharge chamber that leads to collection bin. This chamber was completely clogged and it was awkwardly hard to unclog the caked coffee within this chamber. I won't mention that cleaning the unit can be a messy experience. I reassemble the unit and began another small bean quantity session with success. I put the unit away. Three weeks later, I attempted another grinding session with the same beans. The unit grinded for awhile and again clogged up in the same fashion. I attempted to reach the manufacture by phone but their recorded announcement indicated they were not accepting calls because they were busy and instructed me to write an e-mail describing by problem. I did and they sent me instructions that can be found on their web site. I decided to return the unit at this time. The following are my 1. The unit is noisy. 2. The hopper gasket is flimsy and tricky to mount on the removable ring burr, 3. If your coffee beans are oily, they will cake and adhere to the plastic components after the grind process ad clog up the entire grinding path. 4. Don't lift the bean hopper out of the unit with beans in the hopper without taking care to block the exit chambers. 5. Cleaning the unit in the grinding and discharge area is not easy, I returned the unit,

Hits the sweet spot
3 February 2024

I normally don't give too many five stars. But this unit hits the sweet spot. After years of using a Cuisinart burr grinder, it was time to get a new grinder because I couldn't find the parts I needed to keep the old unit going. This was actually a good thing because I was unaware just how bad that old thing was grinding coffee. It turns out that you really do need to spend at least $150 to get a decent burr grinder. There are many that are way more expensive.I Googled "Best burr grinder that you can get parts for" and the Baratza came up. I went to several sites and actually found just about everything down to the motor available for this device. Then I went to reviews. The reviews were good. It came up as the go-to grinder at its price point on many sites including the NY Times Wirecutter. Now, why I give it five stars. We set the unit to the 20 setting for pour-over, and both my wife and I noticed right away how much better the coffee tasted. When we examined the grinds we noticed that they were extremely consistant. No big ones, and no dust! It turns out that much of our previous grinds had had a lot of dust which led to over extraction and bitterness. Also, this unit is much quieter. I bought it on Crate and Barrel because I am tired of getting everything from Amazon. No, it didn't arrive the next day. It took a few. Get over it.

Major upgrade over old Mr. Coffee grinder
9 March 2023

Working to up my coffee game dramatically, and getting a new grinder has proven to help that move forward significantly. I didn't want to spend my whole coffee improvement project budget on the grinder, so I was looking to get something conical at a reasonable price. I grind on demand, so having a huge hopper wasn't something I was going to spend money on, and I'm focused on pourover and cold brew, explicitly not espresso. Fow what I'm doing, I really like this grinder a LOT. I'm not sure it's for everyone, and knowing what you want to accomplish is really important when you go into evaluating grinders. Fow what I'm doing, I really like this grinder a LOT. I'm not sure it's for everyone, and knowing what you want to accomplish is really important when you go into evaluating grinders. Two things about this grinder have caused minor frustration for me. When I go to replace it, they will become part of my criteria for sure -- first, sound, second static. Every grinder has challenges around these areas, and all my comparison comes from my previous cheap unit, so it's not a great comparison. I've watched a lot of videos of other grinders, and definitely think there are units that are better in these areas, but also cost significantly more. The unit is not quiet. It's quieter a flat burr Mr. Coffee grinder, but it isn't quiet. I don't really mind the noise, as I think you can still carry a conversation over it without yelling. The grandkids disagree and call it "bery bery woud". :-). The static produced in grinding is annoying. The use of a plastic catch basin likely doesn't help this problem, but grinding anything is a static producing event in general, and it's not as bad as I was anticipating. It would be an improvement if Baratza provided a nice brush similar to what comes with the Timemore Chestnut manual grinder -- it is soft bristled and is perfect for sweeping out the cup and small bit of grounds that end up behind and under it. The other design element that would help this problem is putting a thumper on the unit similar to other grinders (like the Fellow Ode) to knock the small amount of grinds that remain in the chute into the hopper. I find that a little super fine spritz of water on the beans before I put them in the hopper keeps the static down nicely and helps get all the coffee through the system. My experience has been really good so far with the grind. While this won't go fine enough to do proper espresso, the results for V60 pour over are great. I've done a lot of experiments adjusting the grind with my ratio to water and get good extraction results. There are certainly "fines" even in the coarser settings, but not so many that it creates a problem. I love the fact that there are a multitude of grind settings on this grinder. Each click of the bin provides a clear difference in the grind, and since I'm still trying to fine tune my recipe and technique, flexibility is a great plus. The bin holds a fairly significant amount of coffee, though I'm normally grinding 25g or less, it can easily hold much more. The most I've done is ~150g for a cold brew batch and the bin held the beans fine, though I did empty the bin about 3/4 of the way through. While I haven't had to do anything with parts replacement, the fact that Baratza sells parts for this machine is a huge plus in my book and was part of what made me give them first shot at my enhanced coffee making endeavors. Being able to repair and upgrade the tools I buy is a great plus, and more vendors should embrace that way of thinking. I'm super happy with this pickup so far. There might be better functional options but for the price and functionality I don't think I could do better. Highly recommend this unit.

Not sure why the highly rated reviews
31 December 2023

Purchased this as a second grinder for grinding other styles of coffee other than espresso. This was to pair with a new Ratio 6 machine. Decided on this after reading a number glowing reviews... I was a bit dubious given price, but was convinced based on reviews and ratio's own reconciliations on pairing these two.Main issues1) this thing is very loud. Reviews claimed it's quite. Those reviews are totally wrong, misleading.2) I choose to "single dose" by weighing and grinding the beans for each individual coffee brewing (also recommended process). Doing this causes a very prominent "popcorning" issue which increases the time required to complete the grind (refer to issue #1)I would recommend looking at other options if considering a new coffee grinder.

Over 20 years service from prior Solis Maestro
23 October 2022

Recently, the Solis Maestro burr coffee grinder I purchased and used almost daily for over 20 years started sounding quite pained, with slow and tortured motor sounds. The Solis Maestro was a standard Baratza offering for years – providing reliable operation and burr grinding while being in a middle market price range (for coffee making equipment). 20 years of service with only an occasional cleaning? I know, Baratza would recommend more frequent cleaning. After visiting the Baratza website and watching a number of helpful YouTube videos from same, I opened up my grinder to find a number of issues, notably a sheared off plastic piece, surrounding the burr assembly --preventing proper setting of the grind. After visiting the Baratza website and watching a number of helpful YouTube videos from same, I opened up my grinder to find a number of issues, notably a sheared off plastic piece, surrounding the burr assembly --preventing proper setting of the grind. I cleaned it out, but the motor was still unhappy and the grind still way too fine at the coarsest setting. I decided to try to “calibrate” the unit, but that broken piece was a problem, and my “repair” resulted in total failure. Being so outdated, Baratza does not provide repair services for the Maestro. A new grinder was in my future. Was it any surprise that a search for “best coffee grinders” revealed the Baratza Encore is top rated? I also read a bunch of Baratza history involving the founders, Kyle Anderson (Bellevue-Seattle area) and Kyra Kennedy (SF-Bay Area), over at Daily Coffee News. I did not hesitate, especially since Amazon had them in stock and below MSRP. (And Amazon would deliver the same day? Really, tomorrow is perfectly OK!). Baratza indicates that the Encore has improved and updated burrs and gearbox. According to Baratza, these burrs are similar to the Virtuoso Preciso burrs and were designed to provide espresso-grinding capabilities to the Encore. Additionally, Baratza says the gearbox has increased strength and durability over the prior Maestro. I believe them. My new Baratza Encore grinder works perfectly. I have regained total control over the grind with observable consistent particle size and for use in my drip coffee maker. I guess I will have to consider the recommendation for more frequent cleaning, but if this grinder lasts 20 years? What a deal. Highly recommended for durability and prior history.

The Best Do-it-all Grinder

Coming from the original Encore, I made the jump to espresso world with the Gaggia Classic Pro. Admittedly, I had ordered the Encore ESP from Amazon a week before I decided on the Gaggia from Whole Latte Love. The delivery of my Encore ESP got botched and I had to cancel it which then I ordered it from WLL who had it shipped a few hours after placing my order. Fool me once, shame on me, now I’m only ordering my coffee gear from WLL!Enough about my woes and on to the grinder! It has the same footprint as the original grinder, but with all the necessary upgrades to allow for espresso. I have been dialing in a standard dark roasts through medium roasts in settings 6-8 naturally the espresso range is 1-20. Plus I can still use my other coffee gadgets like Moka, Chemex, and V60 without needing a separate grinder. All in all, is it the best espresso grinder on the market? No, but I believe it to be best do-it-all grinder at a very reasonable price. If you’re limited on space, cash, or simply beginning your journey into espresso, I think this is one of the best options out there. With Baratza’s fantastic customer service and “fix it, don’t dump it” philosophy, this grinder is such a great investment. For me, it will always be on my countertop even if I upgrade in the future (which will most likely still be a Barazta grinder!). Just like the Gaggia Classic Pro, the Encore ESP has the capability to grow with you along your espresso journey.Bravo Baratza!

Works great for one year, then plastic parts fail
28 November 2022

I've been using this product for about years. It worked great for about 6 months, and required regular cleanings (once a month). The grind slowly became coarser and coarser as plastic parts began to fail (ratcheting grind control, etc). Finally, the adjustability failed completely, and I now have a coffee grinder with exactly one setting - extra coarse. I bought this unit because it was in theory repairable, but in practice, it's not that easy. To adjust the grind calibration, you have to pry off the outer plastic housing with a philips head screwdriver to access the "calibration slots" which actually do nothing. Anyway, I don't know how to review this item, to be honest. I guess we're not supposed to expect items to last forever anymore - we're supposed to expect ... MoreI've been using this product for about years. I guess we're not supposed to expect items to last forever anymore - we're supposed to expect that we get a few great months of use before they slowly begin to fail. In this - this grinder is a success. I guess it's back to the $40 conical burr mill with one setting that I have to grind by hand until I decide what to do with this broken grinder. Clearly, something is mesed up - do I spend the time to debug the cheap plastic parts, months of back-and-forth with some distant customer service entity and hope that giving them more money equals a machine that continues to work, do I donate it to a thrift store, knowing someone with more time and less money will repair it, or do I write a five paragraph essay on Amazon about my existential problem? I think people write stuff like this because they want to buy quality things at an affordable price, and then they want to not think about it - they want their money to buy them high quality daily use appliances. Well, after a year, I can say my experience with this grinder is lukewarm. I'm not sure I can recommend something else, are we really supposed to think that more money equals higher quality? Or, like an apple laptop, does it just delay the "end of life" date? This product does not live up to its claims of repairability and long life.

Value. These last a long time, so the price is sort of relative. for the amount of time spent researching and buying new grinders and getting used to them, this one is probably the cheapest in the long run. Grind quality. These days, the grind quality of this grinder is overstated. It does a good job reliably, and that is about all you can ask for a home grinder. Burrs last about 8years of daily use. but those last two years are probably less than ideal, as the new burrs refresh the grinder noticeably. The conical burrs are not as uniform as flat burrs, but i tend to enjoy conical burrs anyways. There is a reliable character to the grind settings, so you get a much more casual reliability to this machine. It is likely one of the best grind qualities under $200 (2022). That said, there is a lot more competition out there, and the Capresso Infinity probably has the same grind quality, and is a hint more quiet, at just under $99. Also, I’ve had cheaper burr grinders like Krups and Cuisine art, and they don’t match the consistency of grinds day in and day out. That said, they still make good coffee. but replacing a $60 coffee grinder every 5years (even if they don’t break, their burrs go bad) vs getting a Baratza Encore… and the grind quality of the Encore is better than most cheaper grinders, so it is ironic that the better grind ends up costing the same price after several years. Additional It feels like a real appliance, like your fridge or microwave may be around for a decade, and so will this. It is nice to be able to buy something once, and keep it a long time because it does a good job and is reliable. Then just replace parts, which feels good not wasting so much. The look of this thing is neutral, and it eventually disappears into the background. - the hype. They say a lot of things, but this is far from perfect, other than being perfect in compromises. It strikes the right balance of all the needs of grinding coffee at home. - doesn’t do espresso well - was overpriced during the pandemic, but seems they have come back down. Final A ton of good coffee grinders have entered the market, and that means this Encore is no longer as premium feeling as it was a decade ago. But it is nice to know there is still this no brainer option out there. So many things in today’s life we have to constantly learn and research before we can decide, and well, with the Encore, it is still a simply good recommendation that most people can’t go wrong with. Because it is good, it isn’t wasteful, and over time it is actually budget friendly. Not to mention you’ll drink more coffee at home because of it, instead of coffee shops.
