Getting into espresso, I needed a capable grinder. The Encore ESP fit the bill, it's at a good price midpoint price and it does a damn good espresso grind. It's also fantastic for filter or aeropress brews. A great all-rounder.Unfortunately, Baratza no longer provide repairs or servicing so long term maintenance of the grinder is potentially a little rocky, but spare parts are available. The only other problem this grinder has is a bit of a retention problem. It could benefit from a bellows-top. After you finish grinding, you will usually find that you have to gently tap the sides to get it to spit the rest of the grounds out. This means that you are very often left with coffee grounds on the counter top surrounding the grinder.Overall though, this is the ... MoreGetting into espresso, I needed a capable grinder. I’ve had a Niche Zero in the past so I have experienced what it’s like to have a top end grinder. The ESP is not an absolute top end grinder with regards to grind consistency, work flow and overall performance. HOWEVER, for the price, this is actually a very good grinder that punches above its weight. There are 20 grind settings dedicated to espresso. You may not have the micro adjustments required by a coffee expert but there’s enough here to pair this grinder up with something like a Sage Bambino. I’ve been surprised and impressed by the ESP. It’s quick to grind, has a handy dosing cup and the grind quality is not bad at all. Taking the grinder apart to clean is a little fiddly, there can be some static and grind retention but these are acceptable annoyances for a ... MoreI’ve had a Niche Zero in the past so I have experienced what it’s like to have a top end grinder. I preordered this after seeing many glowing reviews from YouTubers. I've had it a month now and I don't think it's a bad grinder exactly, but you should temper your expectations. From the factory I had to add a shim to be able to go fine enough for the first set of beans I tried to use with it, a little bit surprising but not a deal breaker. Two sets of beans later and the finest setting wasn't fine enough for an 18g dose in a 58mm portafilter while using a puck screen, so a second shim needed. The hopper has a wobble to it that makes me nervous it's going to change settings on its own and I have seen others online say this has happened to them.I wanted to use it as a single dose grinder, but has slight issue with retention that I solved using a mini plunger ... MoreI preordered this after seeing many glowing reviews from YouTubers. This just doesn't feel great as a workflow.I noticed issues with static so started RDT'ing but this just excerbated the retention issue to the point of 0.5g remaining in the grinder regardless of whether I bellowed or not. So I ended up taking it apart to clean it out and found a coffee grind paste had formed between the burrs. So expect to regularly clean this.I have had some delicious shots with this grinder, but you really really have to work with it to get there. It's a budget friendly grinder so don't expect it to pair well with a high end machine, I was a bit naive in hoping that it would work well for my needs. After 28 days of battling with it I spoke to coffeehit and they offered to take it in under warranty and test for faults which if found they would send a replacement unit. But I don't believe it to be faulty, I think this is just what you get at £200. I'll be using it for filter coffee going forwards and replacing it with a Niche Duo for espresso.

First, the grinder IS better than cutting blades and does a fair job on finer grinds though all have mor dust than a burr grinder should. The coarser grinds supposedly for French Press are uneven, 1/8 bean to dust particles. There's enough dust that it takes forever (or much scraping of the sides) to get a brew through a paper filter and then the coffee has to be reheated.Construction downgrades: the side on/off switch seems to be just that -- not the spring-loaded switch of former versions, which gradually turned itself off and was essentially automatic once I found where to set it for my usual amount of beans. Thus the choice is, hold the 'manual' button down until your hand gives out, or hang over the machine until all the coffee is ground. It may be just my ... MoreFirst, the grinder IS better than cutting blades and does a fair job on finer grinds though all have mor dust than a burr grinder should. Thus the choice is, hold the 'manual' button down until your hand gives out, or hang over the machine until all the coffee is ground. It may be just my particular Encore, but the rhythmic cracking or crackling suggest that one grinding surface is damaged or defective. Reason for uneven grind & dust?I had a terrible time trying to get the top bowl to settle and lock in -- very easy in the one that died.********** On the good side, I've had no trouble with flying grounds, though there's clearly static in the pull-out container: the last bits and particles of fine grind stick obstinately to the container. Both containers seem very sturdy though I don't know how long the top bowl's cranky catch will last.Note: I keep beans in the freezer, though the small amount I grind at a time means they're well thawed by the time the grinder starts. Sweat on frozen beans might account for the relative lack of static.
I bought this unit in January 2023. It arrived in good order and I assembled the grinder as per instructions. I filled the bean hopper half way and selected the grinding level at 20. I turned the grinder on and it began to grind the coffee beans and I observed the collection bin as it filled with fresh coffee grounds to about a quarter full.. I observed that the fresh coffee beans in the hopper above the bin and noticed that the beans were not moving downwards any longer as the grinder center burr rotated. I switched the unit off and rotated the bean hopper to the 40 setting and lifted the hopper up. At that time, I did not realize that any whole beans in the hopper were going to drop out and randomly distribute themselves throughout my kitchen countertop and floor. ... MoreI bought this unit in January 2023. I switched the unit off and rotated the bean hopper to the 40 setting and lifted the hopper up. At that time, I did not realize that any whole beans in the hopper were going to drop out and randomly distribute themselves throughout my kitchen countertop and floor. Upon looking down at the ring burr and conical burr, I noticed that the the grounded coffee was caked all around the circumference of ring burr and the conical grinding burr. It was obvious that any fresh beans in the hopper above could not reach the grinding components. I searched for the Baratza u-tube video and followed their troubleshooting technique and cleaned the unit. While cleaning, I noticed that the brush they furnish is not well suited for entering the small plastic rectangle discharge chamber that leads to collection bin. This chamber was completely clogged and it was awkwardly hard to unclog the caked coffee within this chamber. I won't mention that cleaning the unit can be a messy experience. I reassemble the unit and began another small bean quantity session with success. I put the unit away. Three weeks later, I attempted another grinding session with the same beans. The unit grinded for awhile and again clogged up in the same fashion. I attempted to reach the manufacture by phone but their recorded announcement indicated they were not accepting calls because they were busy and instructed me to write an e-mail describing by problem. I did and they sent me instructions that can be found on their web site. I decided to return the unit at this time. The following are my 1. The unit is noisy. 2. The hopper gasket is flimsy and tricky to mount on the removable ring burr, 3. If your coffee beans are oily, they will cake and adhere to the plastic components after the grind process ad clog up the entire grinding path. 4. Don't lift the bean hopper out of the unit with beans in the hopper without taking care to block the exit chambers. 5. Cleaning the unit in the grinding and discharge area is not easy, I returned the unit,
I have been using the regular Baratza Encore (2020 model) for a couple years which I have also purchased from iDrinkCoffee. I found that I was grinding for espresso 90% of the time and only doing pour overs and french press once in a while, so when this unit - the ESP version came out, I just knew it was time for an upgrade!I just love the Baratza brand so much because of how reliable it is and how simple it is to use and clean. There's also plenty of resources online made by Baratza and other YouTubers which gives me a peace of mind knowing that there is a lot of support for this grinder.Perhaps I could have spent a bit more money on a grinder that could dial in the perfect grind settings even more than this grinder, but with my workflow and choice of beans ... MoreI have been using the regular Baratza Encore (2020 model) for a couple years which I have also purchased from iDrinkCoffee. I had the Encore ESP for about a month before returning. It produces an excellent grind for both espresso and cold brew, but after I started cleaning it regularly, I noticed that the exit chute becomes completely clogged even after one espresso dose. It doesn’t get clogged on coarser settings. I bought an aftermarket bellows to help keep it clean but the bellows wouldn’t move indicating it is completely clogged, whereas the bellows move freely after a coarser grind.Something I noticed is that the sweepers in the grind chamber don’t touch the grind chamber floor and I think this is because of the shims. Mine came with 5 shims installed but these go under the sweeper and lift the sweeper off the floor. Great smaller grinder. Purchased this to takeaway in my van and was specifically able to grind for expresso shots. You can grind coffee for a few doses and capture in the container without grinds going everywhere or measure a single dose at a time. There is also a single dosing hopper available to purchase from Baratza that makes the height of grinder easier for storing in smaller spaces and keeping those good beans from going stale.Coffee grinds well, not too clumpy at all and is reasonably quiet for a grinder. The unit is plastic, making it lighter, (again good for the van), with a good quality conical burr. The purge button at the front is great for getting all the beans ground.Definitely suits my needs as a daily coffee drinker of expresso and milk based ... MoreGreat smaller grinder. I normally don't give too many five stars. But this unit hits the sweet spot. After years of using a Cuisinart burr grinder, it was time to get a new grinder because I couldn't find the parts I needed to keep the old unit going. This was actually a good thing because I was unaware just how bad that old thing was grinding coffee. It turns out that you really do need to spend at least $150 to get a decent burr grinder. There are many that are way more expensive.I Googled "Best burr grinder that you can get parts for" and the Baratza came up. I went to several sites and actually found just about everything down to the motor available for this device. Then I went to reviews. The reviews were good. It came up as the go-to grinder at its price point on many sites including the NY Times Wirecutter. Now, why I give it five stars. We set the unit to the 20 setting for pour-over, and both my wife and I noticed right away how much better the coffee tasted. When we examined the grinds we noticed that they were extremely consistant. No big ones, and no dust! It turns out that much of our previous grinds had had a lot of dust which led to over extraction and bitterness. Also, this unit is much quieter. I bought it on Crate and Barrel because I am tired of getting everything from Amazon. No, it didn't arrive the next day. It took a few. Get over it.
Short answer - if you like consistency repeatability and predictability with your espresso shots, maybe look at something else.Got the unit when it released and was initially very happy with it's performance. Paired it with the single dose set up so I was weighing out each dose and grinding it individually. Recently though (after around 4-5 months of daily usage - 3-4 shots a day), it really struggles to maintain consistency. My first shot will be 30 seconds to pull (good), the second may drop to 22 seconds with no changes, and then I'll get one at 19 seconds! All with no adjustments made to the grinder, dose size, tamping or espresso machine. It's made it very hard to dial things in as I never know what grind size I'll get.If I do get a short that's pulling too ... MoreShort answer - if you like consistency repeatability and predictability with your espresso shots, maybe look at something else.Got the unit when it released and was initially very happy with it's performance. It's made it very hard to dial things in as I never know what grind size I'll get.If I do get a short that's pulling too fast (lets say 25 seconds), I'll set it one click finer and run another. It will come out at 24 seconds, so even though I set the grinder finer, it's made the coffee more coarse. This is paired with a new Rancilio Silvia Espresso machine - double shot basket, running 16g doses, pulling out 32g of espresso. Same beans for each shot, done the same day. I also recently added in one of the included shims, and did a deep clean of the unit but saw no change in the large consistency between doses. It seems that due to the hopper rotation setting the grind size, the adjustment method may shift a bit? I was originally running a sunbeam minibarista and the consistency issue would cause some shots to plug up the unit and nothing would come out (using a non-pressurised filter basket). Photo is of the current combination set up.
