This is an excellent grinder overall. The W + comes with steel burrs instead of ceramic. These are the same as in the flagship Forte BG (Brew Grinder). It is a very quiet machine with the bean hopper lid on and it is also a "clean" machine with very little mess after grinding. The ability to dial in your perfect grind setting is great but somewhat daunting initially. As well, understanding the grind range and where they apply is not a quick process. My two gripes are:1) when starting to grind to target weight, it will periodically "hiccup" by grinding .5 - 1.5g and then tare back to zero and restart.2) in my particular unit the scale platform is significantly skewed (right side much higher than left) and I wonder if/when it will impact performanceOverall ... a ... MoreThis is an excellent grinder overall. The W + comes with steel burrs instead of ceramic. After having watched all the geeks on YouTube taking their Varios apart all the way to the motor, complaining about the ceramic burrs and making endless mods, I will say that the stock machine grinds beautifully. But, I bought it so I could easily switch from espresso to drip and back every day. It does that, but it has to be running for proper adjustment, so it takes some extra steps and one must get used to the procedure. I think the adjustment knobs are too small and the scale is hard to see. When you get past that, it is a great machine, nice and quiet with repeatable results. I do not regret buying it.

This is my third grinder, so I have quite a few years of experience with espresso, drip, and press grinds. The adjustability of this grinder is excellent. The grinder comes "calibrated", but the recommended setting for espresso is much too fine for my Silvia; it just can't force the water through the puck. This is a desirable thing because I replaced my last grinder because it had trouble grinding fine enough for good espresso extraction. It took a few tries to ballpark the espresso setting but the fine adjustments were fairly quick. The drip setting was pretty much what is suggested in the Quick Start Guide. One of the reasons I chose this model is that it has a ground coffee container, in addition to the portafilter holder. The portafilter holder is more than a wire support; it is an entire assembly that slides in place of the ground coffee container and it is very heavy (sturdy). The bean hopper and lid are also tinted clear plastic. The bean hopper has a shutoff control so that it can be removed and emptied with minimal mess.

I received my grinder on July 15th and 13 days later I am already experiencing problems. It would grind for a few seconds then the machine would jam up and stop. I am using the grinder on the coarsest settings to use on my Moccamaster Technivorm.I had taken apart my grinder four times, cleaned it, and put it back together only to experience the same problem. After further research and observation, I began poking around the exit hole with an Allen wrench only to find the hole blocked with coffee grounds! Keep in mind that I have the machine set on the coarsest settings and this hole is blocked up after just 13 days of use. Based on this poor performance, had I been grinding for espresso, which calls for much finer grounds, this exit hole would have blocked up much sooner!I had been grinding the same coffee beans for years with no problems on my Baratza Solis (an inferior machine in comparison), which I finally retired after 20+ years of faithful service to make room for this new grinder. For a near $500.00 grinder, I do not believe my expectations for such a machine are unreasonable. If there is an adjustment or some technique that would be helpful, I would love to know about it, rather than tearing apart the grinder every 10 - 15 days.Thank you.
So far satisfied with when grinding espresso. 4 stars because the micro-adjust is loose from a - d, stiff from r - v and overall difficult to feel the micro-adjustment steps. That aside, grind retention is not bad; measured .25g - 1g (18g of beans/single dosing). Can get it to pretty much zero retention on single dosing but it requires rocking the grinder around to help get the last bean or two into the burrs and out the chute. Have not tried grinding for other brew methods yet but for espresso Vario+ is doing well. Found 1 microstep makes a big difference in shot time (5 - 8 sec) with 18g in / 36g out / same flow/temp/pressure for the beans I am using. Yes, I am weighing the ground beans in the portafilter to +/- 0.02g. for consistency.Would I buy this again over ... MoreSo far satisfied with when grinding espresso. 4 stars because the micro-adjust is loose from a - d, stiff from r - v and overall difficult to feel the micro-adjustment steps. That aside, grind retention is not bad; measured .25g - 1g (18g of beans/single dosing). Because I am pulling consistent and most importantly delicious shots.
So if you want some good pourover this is a good grinder to get. However if you want espresso I'd look elsewhere. I figured I'd enjoy this grinder as a step up from my Sette 30. Got some good reviews. But slithering underneath was a word "inconsistency". That's what I'd read when people turned this down in favor of others. I didn't get it at the time but now that I have one I get it.It's inconsistent. And I mean DAY TO DAY.And sadly customer support at Baratza was pretty useless. Nice people. I'm SURE if you need parts they will help. But they cannot fix the inherent problem with this lever based adjustment system. So as a user I'll use the same coffee for a few months. But they cannot fix the inherent problem with this lever based adjustment system. So as a user I'll use the same coffee for a few months. So no changes there. But to get the same extraction over 30 seconds with the grams in and out I like I will have to adjust it every other day.I do believe that the lever adjustment system is the issue. It cannot retain pressure on the burrs like a rotating screw type system can. Those are found on your Niche Zero, Turin, etc. The beans as they are ground up will push against the burrs and try to separate them. This gets more pronounced as you get into espresso as you retain finer grinds in the burrs and the close proximity of the burrs required for that fine of grind.A large screw type you'd find on other espresso grinders CAN give you the retention needed to keep the burrs from pushing apart. The "levers" in the Vario CANNOT.You will end up doing the same thing I am doing. Chasing down a grind setting that you feel should be consistent day to day but varies quite a bit. It's happy one day then too coarse the next. So you adjust finer. Then finer. Then its good. Then its back to going coarser and coarser.Save your money and look elsewhere. Plus you will want the single dose hopper and steel burrs and BOTH are extra if they are even in stock. You want pourover? This will make you happy. So I'll give it that.
I have an older Vario without the weighing function and was a first skeptical that this would be handy, as I'm used to using a scale to weight my beans for every shot, or if I get lazy, I just use the timer. However, the great thing about this grinder is indeed the ability to fine tune every shot by weight and grind. No more scale on the counter, or just dosing by time alone. This machine really makes life easy, and gives totally consistent doses. If you're fussy about your shots (and who isn't) this grinder with the weight function means one less step and less clutter on the counter if you're using a scale to weigh your beens for every shot. It also makes it easy to keep the right dose when changing beans, i.e. say a medium roast to a full city roast, as darker ... MoreI have an older Vario without the weighing function and was a first skeptical that this would be handy, as I'm used to using a scale to weight my beans for every shot, or if I get lazy, I just use the timer. However, the great thing about this grinder is indeed the ability to fine tune every shot by weight and grind. It also makes it easy to keep the right dose when changing beans, i.e. say a medium roast to a full city roast, as darker beans weight more than lighter beans and grind differently. It's easy to dial it in, and then just put it in one of the memory functions. I found this grinder easy to set up and use for espresso grinds as well as coarser, Mr. Coffee type brewing.
Just had this for a week. Previous grinders all conical burrs. This arrived with grind dust in the burrs. Emailed support after investigation determined it was calibrated by Clive and left dirty put back in packing for me to clean. I followed video how to clean it out. Then used it to grind pour-over for last 4-5 days seemed to be ok. Today switched over to new beans for espresso set on E3 as suggested in Clive setup video and after final adjustment for grind size settled on L3. Pulled shot 18g in, 50ml out 33s. Not bad for first shot. Then all heck broke loose. Tried to adjust grind for slower extraction but adjusting to I3 I got nothing from grinder. After several grind attempts getting nothing out I did unclog procedure per Baratza video. After reassembled got clumps and clumps of grinds out without putting anything in. Assume these were previous grind attempts but don't know where it was hiding since I just cleaned burr chamber thoroughly, I thought! These grinds were all warm and clumpy.Longer story short tried several grind settings between L3 to L4 each choked the espresso machine. Finally using K5 got a 20g, 45g, 22s, much too fast. After wasting 1/2-16oz bag of not cheap beans I got tired will try again tomorrow.I gotta say so far I'm not happy with this grinder. As for Clive I tried reaching them twice today by phone and finally got call back at 7:23 PM est, 4:23 Portland time. Person I spoke with implied he didn't think I was running machine while changing the grind settings. I admit, I may have done that a couple times because I'm not used to using flat burr grinders. As I said all past grinders have been conical burrs. Maybe I should go back to conical burrs?
Received 1st Vario from Clive Coffee early March 2021. It arrived dirty so had to clean it. Called Clive and was told they did dial in service but it should have been cleaned prior to shipping. Ultimately returned it to Baratza as defective. Grinds were getting into interior of grinder and after a few grinding attempts it stopped grinding altogether. Received new grinder promptly from Baratza of March 26, 2021. Have had better luck with this grinder but it is very, very difficult getting dialed in for espresso. Believe what Clive Coffee says about being ready to use a full 16oz bag of coffee to get dialed in. I used 2× more than that! Grinds good for pour-over which as you know is not a critical grind. Believe what Clive Coffee says about being ready to use a full 16oz bag of coffee to get dialed in. I used 2× more than that! Grinds good for pour-over which as you know is not a critical grind. As summer arrived, I live in Indiana, switched to cold-brew buying it pre-ground from roaster. This last batch of cold-brew decided to try using Vario to grind it for course for cold-brew instead of buying pre-ground. Vario is not very good at grinding course! Talked to a Baratza representative and was told the Vario-886 with ceramic burrs is NOT good for cold-brew grind, that burrs just don't far enough apart. Wish I had known this before purchasing. On another note, the two little prongs that hold the macro ajustment lever (handle) broke off on 9/22. Called Baratza to their credit they shipped replacement right away. Today is just 9/25 so haven't yet received the estimated delivery date is 9/27. I gotta say as an AP grinder I am not impressed. I probably should have stuck with my conical burr grinder. Unfortunately I gave away my conical grinder when I got Vario because I don't have space for 2 grinders. In future when going to cold-brew will buy pre-ground from roaster. Will only use Vario for espresso, pour-over and maybe French press. Although, since it (Vario) doesn't do course welll it may not be cause enough for FP either.Another issue I have with Vario ceramic is that according to the manual on page 12 it says to calibrate with macro lever on 1 and to listen for change in sound of burrs at M on micro lever. The Clive video suggest 2Q as adjustment is factory adjustment. Which is it?
I used the original Baratza Vario for many years and had issues with the drive mechanism sticking and it was very loud. The motor croaked so I decided to replace rather than repair. We just set up and used our Vario+ and so far we love it. The appearance is cleaner and more solid. This mach8be is so much quieter during the grind cycle. I am not sure what they did but the actual grind chamber appears to be more solid.I only put in the hopper what I need to grind for the morning and use a regular and decaf (wife) bean daily. I like the idea of the new hopper shutoff feature but I don’t think I’ll need it. I tried it and it does work. From what I can tell we have zero ground coffee retention. The porta filter holder is solid metal and built like a tank. Don’t drop it on your toe!The suggested grind setting was very close. We went just two minor clicks more coarse for my Bezerra coffee maker. The light is a nice feature too. Not critical, but nice. It is fun to watch the grinds piling up.So…first impressions are very favorable. I’ll update as needed.
