BattleTech - Game of Armored Combat

In this introduction to the BattleTech game and universe, players each take control of one or more giant walking war machines (BattleMechs, aka 'Mechs) and battle until their opponent is destroyed or until the scenario objectives being played are completed. In 2019 the old BattleTech Introductory Box Set was replaced by two all-new box sets. The second of these (after the Beginner Box) is A Game of Armored Combat. AGoAC comes with eight 'Mech miniatures--seven new, one a repeat from the Beginner Box (all made to a higher quality level than the previous generation of box set miniatures). The AGoAC rules cover introductory weapons and the standard BattleTech ruleset for mechs. In terms of rules, the intended follow-on from this box is either the BattleMech Manual (for more advanced but still mech-only play) or Total Warfare (for combined arms play featuring mechs, combat vehicles, infantry, air support, etc).

Amazing sculpts, high quality product, but not perfect...

I LOVE the new Battletech sculpts! I don't game anymore, but I still enjoy collecting, painting, and modeling minis. I got exposed to the Battletech universe through PC and console games, and the old sculpts always seemed outdated. These new sculpts are impeccable. As a person who enjoys modeling and painting these are great. My ONLY complaint is that I wish that they had used a slightly softer plastic to make it a bit easier to remove what little flash is on these. It's not much, but I am overly picky when it comes to flash removal. The plastic is just a TAD too hard to be easily trimmed, but it's ok. I still rate these minis A++. The trimming, if you choose to do it, should be done by an adult; but it will be fine if you don't. I'm just picky. If you are looking ... MoreI LOVE the new Battletech sculpts! If you are looking to get into Battletech or mini war gaming in general and haven't made up your mind yet, these new sculpts are HARD to beat. These will be an absolute joy to paint, and they will look beautiful on the tabletop. The other part of my review covers the extras. There are lore packets of short stories in these and they are interesting to get someone immersed in the universe's lore. They didn't have to produce these, so the extra touch is appreciated and welcomed. The rulebooks are easy to read, understand, and the rules are mostly intuitive. I feel that Battletech can easily be played with your kids if you want to introduce them to mini wargaming when compared to other game systems. Granted, some things have to be referenced, but every game has that. Battletech's rules are on the simpler side compared to other wargames. So, I give high marks there too.The new line of Battletech products are A++ to me. Get these even if you're just interested in collecting and painting them like me. They're gorgeous and look more realistic from an engineering and military perspective than the older sculpts. In my opinion the detail level has gone up an order of magnitude.Another good point is the price. I have 5 rather large armies from Warhammer, and 8 also rather large armies from Warmachine, so I know what I'm talking about. lol Getting into Battletech is VERY cheap in comparison, but the quality is superb. I know, I know, I keep gushing over the minis, but they're just so beautiful. I can't help it. lolI hope this helps someone make a decision. :)Cheers.

You can't go wrong picking either one up.

Great quality minis with excellent detail. I've purchased the Battletech beginner box, a game of armoured combat, the clan invasion expansion and an inner sphere command lance. In all 4 purchases I've only had 2 models that were slightly bent out of shape (which was easily fixed by putting them in hot water) but the overall quality is fantastic. As far as table-top wargames go this one is far more affordable than most and the core set comes with everything you need to get you into the hobby. I would recommend the beginner box as an introduction for new players who may not know somebody that can teach them the rules, but A Game of Armoured Combat is the perfect follow-up to get you playing full games of battletech with some mates.

Excellent Edition of a Classic Game
11 May 2021

This boxed set is an extremely well done "core" set for the latest iteration of Battletech by Catalyst Game Labs. Both complete newcomers, as well as hardened Battletech veterans, will find a lot of value in this box. The 8 plastic minis that are included are fantastic, and have enough variety to allow for a number of different scenarios. The maps are attractive and practical for game play. The rule book contains everything you would need to get the full BT experience. The set also includes some nice "fluff" to give new players a feel for the BT universe. The artwork is excellent and evocative.Despite being nearly 40 years old, the core rule mechanics hold up quite well. Although they do have a distinctly vintage feel to them. Still, the game plays fast and offers a lot of interesting tactical decisions. The different types of battlemechs have different capabilities, which mean you must tailor your strategy for the specific forces you are fielding. There is no one size fits all solution to battles in a game of BT.I highly recommend this boxed set, as it makes an excellent entry point for new players while also having high value for experienced players.

Flexible entry into a timeless family of games.
9 February 2023

Battletech does a great job of offering a challenging and tactical game, while providing nearly endless narrative gaming opportunities. This box is a great into into the family of games that is Battletech. Furthermore, the miniatures and basics of the rules are interoperable with almost all of their other games!

Loving the Minis!
5 July 2022

I remember Battletech from the 90s when I played fairly frequently. I have enjoyed the streamlined rules and the models... the models are awesome! I have much prefered the plastic ones over the old metal ones I remember. And getting 8 in this boxed set was great! A much less-expensive option than some miniature games out there.

The best starter set in Miniature Gaming today
22 February 2023

What is there to say about Battletech that hasn't been said already? It's a deep, characterful, and most of all fun minis game and has been for decades. This latest iteration of the starter set comes with everything 2 players need to throw down - and that's no small feat. The maps, terrain, and mechs are all good quality and ready to go out of the box (albeit with some minor papercraft necessary for the buildings). I can't think of another minis game that provides this deep of an experience so quickly after purchase. On top of that, it's got all the materials you'd need to use the mechs for a game of Alpha Strike which is just a lovely touch for CGL to have added.

There are a lot of people who believe that BattleTech is a new game, but it actually has a lot of history. This new iteration, unlike a lot of other games, does not completely change the rules. It tweaks them. The materials have improved greatly over the years, and the new miniatures are very nice. This set is a great value, as well - consider any one of the miniatures included in it would sell for $8-$15 and you understand what I mean. It's not quite a game you just pick up and play like many on the market. It does, however, offer a lot of replay value and the ability to expand far beyond the limits of this set. This is the latest version of the introductory game, and Catalyst's third try at it, and it's excellent. The minis have never been of a higher quality, there's a fun story included, and the rules are presented in a clear and easy to grasp way. The only knock I could give it is the quality of the included maps, which unfortunately are just paper. It might be a good idea to laminate them if you have access. It's a shame, since they're new designs, and double sided. It's a good value for the money, and I look forward to many new players finding their way into this old school gaming universe with this fantastic new product.

Unlike other games it is not about throwing dice and move. It is a game for those who like details and realism. It is not the simpler of games. But it is famous for a reason. It has lots of rules and it does not need a dungeon master, you you can even play alone, pretending to be the enemy if you wish. The only weak spot is that board is made of paper, unlike a Monopoly board. And it has 8 plastic mechs and 8 cardboard mechs and that does not feel so magic. Will it annoy me? Nope. This is great entertainment for these boring days of quarintine. As for the product itself, this is the standard game with a full set of rules to play combat between robots (they call them mechs). It includes 2 light mechs, 2 heavy mechs and 4 medium mechs. It has record sheets for many mechs, including the Griffin that is not included as plastic ministure. If you want a set with simplified rules, good for newbies, or you want a Griffin miniature, or another map to play, you may want to buy the Beginner Box. This is what I did. I bought the Beginner Box that has 2 plastic miniature mechs. The rules of this standard game are many more than I expected, for a casual board gamer like me, whose most complex game has been Monopoly or chess (I always lose in chess). The issue is that these rules bring overwhelming realism to the game. This standard box takes place in a time right before the clan invasion, during succession wars. This game does not include any rules to play with vehicles, infantry, dropships (descent vehicles), jumpships, etc. So some mech variants that include flamer or machine gun are diminished in usability because of lack of infantry and vehicles. As I said, the rules are overwhelmingly complex for a casual board gamer. What you can do is to search youtube for "retrovision battletech tutorial" that explains rules in a very visual way, but in Spanish. There are other tutorials, but are not so visual and a bit boring. Playing a single turn takes a lot of time. So those players who are not willing to so much realism and attention to detail, may feel bored. This game was designed for people who love attention to detail. For players who want simplicity, the beginner box will do. For the rest, this standard box will do. The game includes pilot cards with special abilities, but the manual does not explain how to use cards. What I did was to take the two numbers on the top corners of the card, and use the left one as piloting skill, and the right one as gunnery skill. The difference between the beginner box and this standard game is that beginner box does not have internal armor, you cannot damage equipment inside and have machine malfunctions due to damaged hardware, and heat is not a problem. Heat can slow your mech, hurt the pilot, cause ammunition explosion. Also, in the beginner box you cannot conduct physical attacks, like kicking, punching, and many others. The standard game does not allow to jettison ammunition, so when it explodes, it could blow your mech straight to the stars. As casual gamer, be prepared for the steep curve of learning many rules.
