I hadn't recorded music in a long time; like, since before USB interfaces were a thing, and I'm not a very tech-savy person. I abandoned my old, mostly analog, PC setup, high-jacked my wife's MacBook, and ordered the Behringer UM2. I had also opened Garage Band for the first time ever, and it recognized the interface right away. I just changed the input settings on the laptop, and played around with it for hours on the first day.I really don't have anything bad to say about it. It sits at my home station, and I don't intend of taking anywhere or doing anything where it might get damaged. It's very straight forward and compact. If all you want to do is plug your instrument in via 1/4" or xlr and play without having to figure out anything else about the unit, then ... At one time this UM2 USB audio interface was the best bang for buck value. Then, several years ago, Behringer released the UMC line featuring Midas designed preamps comparable to those found in the X32 mixing console. These Midas designed preamps are far superior to the XENYX Mic Preamps found in the UM2 line, which are noisy and lack the dynamic range in comparison. If you are looking for the cheapest usb interface, the UM2 may be a good choice. If you are looking for the best value, please do yourself a favor and check out the Behringer U-PHORIA UMC202HD USB audio interface or the UMC204 which adds midi in/out. I chose the UMC404HD with 4 discreet analog combo XLR/1/4 inputs, 24-bit/192KHz interface, MIDI in /out, A/B monitor selection and the ability to run on ... I am a worship leader, singer/songwriter. I write a ton of songs, and I need a way to record them to send them to my band. I bought the Behringer U-Phoria UM2 for the price point, no other reason. I needed something quick and easy that I could record directly into Logic Pro X. I use to use an I-Rig, and found that it wasn't the easiest thing to use for what I wanted to do.I am pretty impressed with the Behringer. I have read reviews on it, and saw the good and the bad. In my opinion, this works great. It is plastic, so I'm sure the durability could be better, and if you're traveling with it you may want to look at something else. For me, this sits in my home studio. I get no noise, no feedback, and it can handle my acoustic guitar, vocals, bass guitar, and my electric pedal board. I get a great response with no lag. My recordings are crisp and clear. I am extremely satisfied. Now, I know there are probably better units, but this has done the job for me. I am completely happy with it! If you're looking for something quick and cheap, you can't go wrong with this unit!
The UM 2 works very well with the Garageband DAW straight out of the box, no downloading required. Simply load the DAW, go to preferences, audio / midi and select USB audio codec for input and output (output will be through the UM2 headphone socket) or use built in if you are using monitor speakers and exit preferences. In your project select either 1 usb audio codec if you are using mic input or 2 usb audio codec if you are using inst 2 input jack plug, and your good to go. Top tip: When setting volumes, turn the gain up until you hear any pre amp hiss then back it down until the hiss is inaudible. This will give you great results.
I bought two of these for musicians in our local music club. Coronavirus has forced us to go online to play. Geriatric technophobes had no trouble connecting these audio interfaces and the sound is certainly good enough for the limits of Zoom's audio. One niggle that cost Behringer a star in most categories: One box worked fine with a mic but gave nothing from the instrument (line 2). This turned out to be a problem with the recommended ASIO4ALL driver. There is a dedicated ASIO driver for the UM2 and I don't know why Behringer don't tell us that in the instructions. I found it online and it solved the problem. Apparently it's an issue with the chipsets on certain PC sound cards.
The UM2 is the least expensive analog audio-to-USB converter that accommodates balanced or unbalanced audio sources. The UM2 comes with a USB cable and converts analog mic level (XLR, input 1), line level (1/4" TRS phone, input 1) and instrument level (1/4" TS phone, input 2) to USB. The USB handshake is fast and recognized by any PC I've used. The UM2 is powered from USB, so batteries or AC adapter are not required, has phantom power for powering a condenser mic, a headphone jack, input / output gain knobs, analog RCA audio jacks for local stereo recording / monitoring, and Signal, Clip, Power and Phantom Power indication LEDs. The XENYX preamplifier is transparent. Also, it has a security lock slot. That's a lot of functionality. I've used it mainly for video ... I've used it mainly for video streaming operations, but it would make a respectable recording interface. My only complaint is that you have to use the 1/4" TRS jack for +4dB line level input, and the XLR only accommodates mic level audio sources, a minor pain.
For the price cannot find this product was and works as advertised. My Granddaughter has used it with her electric guitar using a Mac book, with GarageBand. She now has a Blackstar Amp also from yourselves, it’s the small Debut 10 so that works well for her.
to start off it arrived 2 days faster then expected! nice packaging no shipping damage. It's a fairly small device, just a little bit bigger then a guitar effects pedal, the volume knobs are easy to rotate, and buttons are easy to press / slide. The mic port works great, not too hard to connect and unplug. everything works good with this mic ( TONOR Pro Condenser Microphone XLR to 3.5mm Podcasting Studio Recording Condenser Microphone Kit Computer Mics with 48V Phantom Power Supply Black ) the outputs got to either usb or red / white auxiliary ports. For me just getting into this style of mic recording I like to hear how I sound so this box is great for that! currently trying to figure out how I can connect the audio out in a way that I can hear it without needing ...
