I have used this xl for almost half a century and to this day I am constantly shocked at the performance. Consistent strength, lasts forever (out of the sun), casts like silk. Getting hung-up with anything over 8 lb test and you have a job on your hands (quick yanks don't work like other lines).I recently had to figure the capacity of a spinning reel so I digital calipered 6 and 8 lb. and they were on-the-nose to what is stated. Shocked again.

Bought this a little while ago as I wanted to get practising with my new Abu Garcia Black Max Baitcaster. I haven't fished for about 11 years and was curious to see what fluorocarbon was all about. Never used a Baitcaster either! So perhaps worst case scenario user here?Reading several baitcasting tips that said NOT to go with fluoro but with mono I did read one or two forum posts saying the new XL is as good to practice with.First thing I did was spool the reel the correct way, ie. feeding the reel spool from the top of the feed spool, making sure the coil in the line coming off matched the direction of the reel spool, ie. one big loop. Also stopped about 2.5mm from the top of the reel spool so the baitcaster was properly spooled. On the actual day my first ... MoreBought this a little while ago as I wanted to get practising with my new Abu Garcia Black Max Baitcaster. It really does disappear!Furthermore, casting was incredibly easy after making sure I set the baitcaster up properly and made sure that I was casting correctly. It behaves like the lines I used to use but then even better. Nice to see the lures run a bit deeper too.So hello 2016!!!! Here I am! Very pleased I went with Berkeley and will 100% buy more......maybe I can even get my spinning friends into using this?? Would love to give them a free spool of it for them to try out? Maybe something can be arranged for them? As I'm sure they'll become regular customers too.

Been using Berkely Trilene XL since the 80's. It is a great line used correctly. I use it only for "finesse" techniques (Ned rigs, drop shot, Neko rigs, Wacky rigs). It has the least amount of "memory" and therefore is far less susceptible to line twist, which is wonderful when using spinning reels for these techniques, with 6, 8, or 10lb. line. Other mono lines, and flourocarbon lines are stronger and more abrasion resistant, perhaps less visible, but none of that matters if you're fighting coils and line twist. Braided line doesn't coil, but then you will need to attach a mono or flouro leader, which can severely weaken line. Use Trilene XL and learn to use your drag properly, and tie good knots. Improved Clinch Knot never fails if tied correctly.

I have been buying trilene mono sine the 80s . I tested all the mono and this one always came out the best . So , after about 39 years of using , I am still happy with it and still buying it . Great castability and holds a knot well . I will continue buying it ..
This is the perfect fishing line. I’ve tried everything. I run 6 pounds or 8 pounds with this trilene. Make sure you buy smooth casting. I pick green. Running light lines is much more rewarding when catching big fish. And the stretch adds more strength than you would expect. You can catch a 10 plus pound on the 6 pound. Light = longer casting and more finesse baits. Pair with Shimano bfs reels.
My friends use this line don’t know why they do I use SeAgaur and why that’s not a fair fight SeAgaur came out with 100% fluro line for 10$ so makes this line useless it tangles up so it’s impossible to tie knots. You get about 4 days of use before it’s all stretched out the casting distance is awful. Spend the extra money buy SeAgaur or pline fluro coat. Even p line I’ve turned my back on compared to SeAgaur. I had an open mind to this line and it was not good
I've used (mostly) Trilene XL since the mid 80's. I have tried other Trilene variants and other Berkley lines as well. Some were OK, others not so much. Sure, it isn't as strong as braid with the same diameter and it isn't as sensitive as braid or flourocarbon. What XL gives is "enough". It's strong enough and sensitive enough to fish a wide variety of baits and techniques. Couple that with superior castability and low memory and it keeps me coming back spool after spool. It is the standard by which I judge all other lines.
I was going to use this as a light leader attached to braid, but the blood knot snapped on the first 3 fish I set the hook on. I pulled it off of all my rods and threw it in the garbage and went back to P-Line CXX. I did some simple knot tests with other knots and the line constantly snapped at the knots whenever any shock was applied to it.
I have always used this line. 8lb XL Smooth Casting in fact. On my journey to find something a tad less stretchier. I just found my self coming back to using the same line, just as 12lb XL Smooth Casting. You cannot beat this mono. It does whatever you need it to - Just don’t wait too long like me to size up or down based on the game you’re going for. I mainly bass fish and use the Low Vis Green.
Way too much line memory. Line gets permanently shaped and becomes unmanageable. Decent casting on a large spinning reel but anything other than that is not ideal. Other than that this line is practically unbreakable. After getting a hook on the fish it is almost a guaranteed catch.
