An interesting design for a clamp

This is certainly an interesting design. The length of travel of the closing mechanism is pretty short. Not much travel to adjust. But it has it good moments in the shop where others don't function as well. I bought 2 and glad I did but I won't be buying more.

I was looking to add some specialty clamps to my shop arsenal, and I’m glad I went with these GearKlamps. They function just like F-style clamps, but they’re a little more versatile. You can almost always get the clamp positioned the way you like, even when there are already loads of clamps in place on your project. This was a common problem for me in the shop, and I didn’t have a good solution until these clamps arrived. I think the clever engineering and gear driven mechanism sold me. They have a very positive clamping action, and the partially rubberized handle makes engaging and removing the clamps a breeze. The sliding mechanism is controlled by a thumb lever, and seems to work great.Honestly I’m surprised how much I like these clamps, but I think I’ll go buy ... MoreI was looking to add some specialty clamps to my shop arsenal, and I’m glad I went with these GearKlamps. This was more cumbersome to use than I expected it to be and didn't really seem to offer anything my other clamps didn't already have covered. Maybe there's a technique to it that I don't know but it didn't seem worth keeping at the price so I returned it. Hard to believe as it may be, I seem to have enough clamps without adding this to the inventory.

Excellent clamp, but with a design flaw
1 December 2020

I purchased a few dozen various lengths of this clamp and they have been fantastic overall. The best feature is the gear actuation of the design, allowing for tight access and leaving plenty of room for your knuckles. With that said, there is a design flaw. The plastic twist handle is held in place with a plastic retainer clip that breaks quite easily. In fact one came out of the shipping box that way. One drop will break the clip. Currently, 4 clamps have a broken retaining clip. I don’t see an easy way to repair it without simply replacing the handle. The clamp will still work but it will not stay in place. All the engineering that went into this clamp and it fell short with a silly retaining clip design. Hopefully they come up with a fix.

GK30 is an Excellent Clamp

The design of these clamps is, at least initially, great. I frequently have something clamped to a cabinet top, and break knuckles tightening the clamps. Not so with this clamp.Clamping force is fully adequate for most uses. Otherwise, the Bessey parallel clamps come into service. The only issue is the availability of the red plastic clamp faces. I have other Bessey clamps that have had these fail (duh - they are light plastic), and haven't found a source of replacements. Hopefully these will be available from Bessey retailers..

Have you ever had a glueup in process, and you’re trying to close the joint? You want to add a couple more clamps, but there’s no more space. I didn’t have a great answer for this problem until I discovered these Bessey GearKlamps. They engage solidly and claim to have 450 lbs. of holding power. From what I’ve experienced in the shop, I certainly believe it. They will fit literally anywhere – and it’s because of the clever handle that’s in line with the clamping bar. The handle itself is partially rubberized so it’s easy to grip for clamping as well as releasing the clamps. Much more versatile than originally expected, I’ll be adding more GearKlamps to the collection for sure. Great Clamp, Pricey
28 October 2022

I bought 4 of these clamps for use when rebuilding a deck, mostly on my own. They really shined when holding boards in place, slight adjustments when attaching the floor joist to the rim joists, and other tasks like building the framing for the stairs (not your standard stringer situation). I took off one star for two reasons - the price and how easy it is to knock the circular red pad off the lower, handle portion. I almost lost one a few times in the rocks below my deck.

I hesitate to give this clamp five stars, because it has some weaknesses, but as a specialty clamp, it does what it is supposed to do. One of the problems with traditional F style clamps is that the handle is often right up against whatever you are clamping which limits your ability to tighten it as much as you would like. This clamp fixes that problem by moving the handle to the other side of the clamp. This function works well (which is the reason for the 5 star rating). The major disadvantage is the clamping mechanism doesn’t travel very far, so if there is slop in the boards you are clamping, it might not have the reach to get them tight. Also it doesn’t feel like it has the same clamping force as a traditional F-style clamp. Finally it has a lot of plastic on ... MoreI hesitate to give this clamp five stars, because it has some weaknesses, but as a specialty clamp, it does what it is supposed to do. For now, it’s a great little clamp for getting into spots where traditional clamps don’t fit well, and for that reason I recommend it.

If you need best quality clamps then look no further. Bessey brand is the way to go. This GearKlamp is one of a kind the fact that you can clamp in tight spaces is the main reason to get it. It has a very nice feature- quick release/adjust handle. Hold handle and use your thumb to press the red button looking thing and you can quickly adjust handle up and down.Has 450 pounds of pressure which for small glue-ups this clamp can be used as well. The head on the handle side swivels quite a lot, meaning it does not need exact parallel clamping places.Keep in mind this is a SPECIALTY CLAMP FOR SELECT TASKS. It is better to stick with Parallel, F-style, and bar clamps for most tasks. Rockler excellent customer service. Disappointed in plastic part on the clamp.
11 March 2022

On my first use one of the two plastic "studs" that attach the handle to the clamp broke. These two plastic studs are a weak link and it would be a design improvement if these were simply replaced by a couple of short set screws in the handle. I reported the failure promptly to Rockler and asked for just a replacement part. Rockler customer service immediately responded and quickly sent me an entire new clamp. Excellent service.
