This jacket is fantastic, but the company itself is beyond amazing. I had first purchased this jacket in 2007. Recently the seam tape on the inside started coming loose. I sent the jacket into Arcteryx for repair. They notified me of their inability to repair back to original condition. They gave me a credit of 100% of the original cost of the jacket and said I could use that credit toward the purchase of a brand new jacket. I am unaware of another company that would do something like that. Incredible! I am an Arcteryx customer for life. Their products are terrific. Original cost is pricey, but the company stands behind their products as evidenced by their credit of 100% of the original purchase price after 17 years of use. I love this jacket. Initially I intended to get the Alpha SV but decided to get the Beta AR instead as the 80/40 denier mix is more comfortable, less stiff and less noisy (significant noise when moving and specially when wearing the hood) that the 100 denier fabric on the Alpha; less hardwearing I guess but I'll compromise.I found the hand pockets on the Beta AR more comfortable than the chest pockets on the Alpha. The hood is big enough to wear over a helmet but adjustable enough to be super comfortable without one.The 40d fabric in the lower part chest/back doesn't bead water as well as the upper fabric (80d) but haven't experienced any water coming in.Roomy enough to wear with a thick mid-layer under, fits true to size on the loose side.Love the jacket! glad ... MoreI love this jacket. Ok but not great

I have owned this jacket for a few months and am already regretting my purchase.A few days after getting the jacket, my partner noticed a weird stain around the collar. This stain does not go away, you can wash it was some detergent (have to be careful with the Gore-Tex) but it remains. I have to follow review guidelines so I can't speak more about this.Other than my particular issue, which to be fair, could likely be avoided by picking a darker color, there are some other issues. Like one reviewer mentioned, the sleeves are really long and the overall fit is weird. It's tight in the shoulders and chest but loose everywhere else. But, if you are a lanky skinny fat guy then this jacket might be the perfect fit for you.The DWR is the worst I have ever ... MoreI have owned this jacket for a few months and am already regretting my purchase.A few days after getting the jacket, my partner noticed a weird stain around the collar. Like one reviewer mentioned, the sleeves are really long and the overall fit is weird. It's tight in the shoulders and chest but loose everywhere else. But, if you are a lanky skinny fat guy then this jacket might be the perfect fit for you.The DWR is the worst I have ever experienced. After a day or two of moderate (not heavy) rain, it already wore off. I was unable to refresh it in the washer/dryer so I had to apply a new DWR coating but that didn't work very long either.Because of the way the jacket fits, the "storm hood" isn't really that functional. If you are wearing anything on top of your head, or have long hair, you will still have to unzip your jacket in order to put the hood up, which kind of defeats the purpose. Then, because of the way the hood is shaped, it is impossible to get it tightened correctly so it doesn't keep flying down when you're in...a storm (or even moderately windy weather). Having a more traditional integrated hood would be lighter and better.I have also noticed patchy areas on my arms and chest where even though it is a 3 layer shell, the water can come through at parts where there are seams. I have not had this issue with other shells, except when the membrane started failing, not in a new jacket. The overall construction appears much lower quality than other shells I have had from Arcteryx or any other brand. There are other things I think you should know but I have to follow review guidelines so I won't. This jacket should be and easily could be much better for how much it costs.

Overall, great. But cuffs wet out in heavy rain.
6 December 2023

Bought over the summer for the wet. This is a pretty solid jacket. I fit an XS but bought an S for room to layer in the colder months. That was a good choice. Just about everything is solid on the jacket, including all pockets and zips. Hood fits over a variety of head accessories. There's just one issue though. Every time I wear the jacket in serious rain, the cuffs wet out. I don't know what the underlying cause is; I've cinched them down pretty tightly. It's really disappointing since it's uncomfortable, and I was hoping a reconditioning (wash + DWR) would take care of it; sadly not. Maybe you (Arc'teryx) can look into it? I've tried to see if others have had this experience as well, but haven't found much online.

Overpriced rain jacket
16 November 2024

This is a crappy over priced rain jacket. DON'T buy from this company. Horrible customer service and they don't stand behind their products. Bought a Theta AR back in the day as a heavy duty shell for Ice climbing, Moutainering, and Search and Rescue work. It rocked! It had a simple zipper issue so sent it in for repair. Was told the Gore-Tex wore out and they did not make that jacket model any more so they sent me this hunk of junk Beta AR. This is a sick outdoor shell.... if ....your walking from your luxury car into the luxury grocery store. Gonna be standing under a wet and icy belay? Don't get this! Depending on it to get you through actual mountaineering applications? NOPE, not this jacket. Using it to go help the lost or injured in the wilderness? NO.NO.NO.

Poor Quality Right Off the Shelf
28 December 2023

I recently bought the Beta AR in September and has sat in my closet until recently. I pulled it out of my closet to give it a good test run outside in the heavy rain in PNW. To my disappointment the jacket had some quality issues. There is a spot on the right sleeve that was completely wetter out. It was the size of a slow pitch ball or roughly 6" in diameter. Not only that, I noticed a fabric flaw in the middle of the wetted fabric spot. This dark spot is not only seen on the face fabric but extends through all of the layers to the inside of the jacket. It is also seen as a dark spot. Upon further inspection of the jacket, the DWR coating was not applied evenly over the entire coat. There were spots all over the sleeves, the waste band, front and back, the hood, shoulders, cuffs (inside and out), etc. that were wet after first time use. It is heart breaking to see a premium product turn out to be constructed poorly. The jacket fits a bit on the larger side and the hood is MASSIVE. Understandingly you can use with helmets. One needs to pull all cordage adjustments almost to their max to make the hood fit without dropping over your eyes. Perhaps a similar model with two options would be beneficial here. One for those who want to use with helmets and ones who do not. Alternatively, perhaps better control over the sizing or draw cord system. The sleeves are also quite long. 0.5"-1" shorter sleeves would have been good in my opinion. The good:The jacket held up really well in the heavy rain except for the defective spots mentioned above. The water beaded off the parts that had proper application of the DWR coating. Jacket is quite comfy and I like the colour.

Super Nerdy Review - Updated Beta AR (L)
16 December 2023

I sent in my 2013 Made in Canada Beta AR (sigh) for repair after the hem gave out. I whomped on that thing for 10 ski seasons and it really was a fantastic jacket. When they emailed me that I could replace it with the new model for $70 I had to think long and hard about it but I am glad I did. Customer service process was very clunky (took about a month to get an answer) - so instead of emailing call them. The new model is definitely a much different jacket in fit and construction. My use case is as a ski jacket so keep that in mind that some changes may be awesome for me but not for your use case. My use case is as a ski jacket so keep that in mind that some changes may be awesome for me but not for your use case. In short if you aren't going to layer under this jacket - then size down BUT if you plan to add multiple layers (even down layers) then order your normal size. Some of the changes I noted from my 2013 model are; much longer in the front and back. The jacket now fully covers my longest mid layers which is a nice change. The collar is MUCH higher and provides way better protection that the 2013 model. Just a note about this - since the collar is much higher you can not wear hooded mid layers under this coat (go with the storm hood model instead). The sizing in the mid part of the jacket is larger than the 2013 model which accommodates any mid layer you could reasonably want to wear (prior 2013 model I was straining it with a mid weight down jacket under it). The sleeve design is way, way, way improved. They have basically 3D cut the sleeve to match your arm articulation now whereas before it was just a straight down cut. Articulation is really good. My only minor gripe with the fit is the sleeves are MUCH longer. My jacket is going down over ski gloves so not a huge deal and I get it why they did this - you had to increase sleeve length when you make everything else longer or else it looks wonky.Materials. The updated Gore-Tex Pro fabric has an amazing feel to it and is much less crinkly than the 2013 version I had before. I got the blue tetra color and oh man the website does not do this justice. Its amazing. The jacket color does have a bit of sheen to it but it really has a nice look. Both the 80D reinforced areas and the 40D areas have a very nice feel to them. The zippers for the pockets and pit zips are light years ahead of my 2013 model - meaning they are much easier to operate. This jacket is Made in Vietnam. Overall construction seems top notch and the stitching is the best I have seen on any jacket. Time will tell if it remains as durable as my 2013 did.Overall I think this is the best hardshell Arcteryx makes (for my use) as they have the fit dialed in just right (big but not huge, room for layers, but not sloppy). As a comparison I tried the Sabre jacket in large and that thing fits like a shower curtain. I'm 5'9" tall and 190 lbs with a 42 inch chest and 34 inch waist. I got the large.

Too many stains
28 February 2024

I am quite disappointed at the quality of this newly bought red Beta AR. You can see stains everywhere. A lot of white stains on the collars make me feel sick. There are also many unknown white stains on the front of the jacket. There are black stains on both cuffs. It seems like it has been worn by someone else before and got it returned. It simply can't be a new jacket. I have been a dedicated fan of Arcteryx. But I hope Arcteryx can really improve the quality of their product. Every time I return a jacket, I have to wait for nobody knows how long until it's been restocked. I don't want to waste so much time and energy getting sick of the product quality and return the item again and again.

User review of Arc'teryx Men's Beta AR Jacket
7 March 2024

This Arc'teryx Men's Beta AR Jacket is fantastic! Its waterproofing is so effective that I stayed dry even under waterfalls, and its comfort is undoubtedly professional. It has been a delightful companion during my outdoor adventures and looks great in photographs. The fit is very stylish, and I particularly love its inner pocket, which keeps my camera batteries from getting cold. The Gore-Tex Pro material is lightweight yet incredibly functional. I am extremely satisfied; it has greatly enhanced my outdoor experience. The customer service was also exceptional, with attentive resolution of any issues I raised.
