I would rate this lantern 10 stars if possible! It is not only my fav piece of camping gear, it is one of my fav things, PERIOD! I love lights, and lanterns, and stuff that glows so not a shocker that I’d love this this thing, but seriously, I use it every day! Rechargeable, multiple light options and compact enough for easy storage and can be used as a power bank.Would have really like to have seen a more rubberized coating on the dome for grip and overall feel. Really disappointed that it uses Micro-USB for charging as this form factor is being phased out and hate it doesn't support USB-C without an adapter. Just requires an extra cord that I really didn't want to pack, but from the looks of it - most of these lanterns still use Mirco-USB ports. Was fine in fair weather, until I hung it from my ridge line under a tarp that had a slow drip, and noticed it started acting like it had a mind of its own. In the middle of the night it turned on full brightness, I had to jump up to see if someone was snooping around my camping spot. :) Nope, it was misbehaving! It eventually gave up its ghost and was returned to from whence it came to rest in peace, REI. I think the design flaw is that there’s a recess under the light that makes it’s less than IPX4 since it captures water and causes it to enter into the body of the light. They need to add drain holes or something so it’s actually IPX4. It's a nice light, gets very bright, but has a number of cons. It's a bit heavy if you're not car camping and the size is large and not collapsible. Also shaking to change modes is a gimmick for them to avoid having two buttons. Imagine having to take down your hanging lantern just to change modes. Candle flicker very hard to notice at highest brightness. Trying to get single color especially red is very difficult because the colors change so quickly and stay at true red only a fraction of a second. Red is a pretty important color for camping in the dark. Some lights have dedicated red filters or red LED modes but here, good luck trying to get red. I feel like I'm playing a carnival game trying to time it exactly right.

I enjoy the flickering campfire/candle mode and use it often at home. The randomization of the flicker could be improved for a more natural look but hopefully that can be done with a firmware update.Overall this is currently the best LED camping lantern on the market when considering the best combo of size, brightness, durability, and battery life. I'm happy I bought it as it will get heavy use in my outdoor photography business.

It works fine for about a month and then it sticks to one setting regardless of where you last leave it. I returned it after I figured this out because it was stuck on full blast white light. I love my Biolite lantern. It’s bright enough to help setup camp in the dark, lights up an entire tent, and is even nice to use indoors (like if your power goes out). The hook at the base allows you to hang the lantern from basically anywhere. Perfect for your ridge line hammock camping. The color-changing setting is very stimulating and an added luxury. My mates and I have even used it as a beacon for our camp site. I’m not sure what happened to my lantern but the lights on one side just stopped working one day. I will say, this has been after countless hours of use that I wouldn’t imagine putting other lanterns through. Wish I could just pop new bulbs in or something. I’ll likely buy another sometime down the road.

Soft light seems to be the go to function for me although I may use other settings later in the summer. The ability to dim the light by holding the top button is a nice feature. They will blink to indicate they are at the limit of the setting. I would be using the red light for night time photography and it would be beneficial to have the ability to go directly to that instead of having to toggle through two other levels before getting to it.
