Black Diamond 9.4 Climbing Rope 70M - Gold

The 9. 4 Climbing Rope is Black Diamond's skinniest line that's certified solely for for single use. It's a balance between lightness and durability that advanced climbers look for whether they're projecting sport or trad. Its 9. 4mm diameter is at once supple and strong to slide through carabiners without much rope drag and still take a surprising amount of falls. Since it sits on the skinnier side, this rope is a great option for the occasional alpine approach as long as the rocks are dry.

Beautiful hand, thick yet supple sheath

I had the chance to work with a friends new 9.6, and it comes off as a bit of a marvel. So, it feels burly for a 9.6 - and if you check the numbers, the dry 9.6 is 65 g/m to the 9.9's 64 g/m and has 3 more factor falls than the 9.9!! (By the way BD, you guys have so many crazy names for jackets and layers, you nailed it on the rope names. Thanks - so simple, so good!) I only used the rope a couple days, so I'll have to report back on endurance, but the rope didn't blacken my hands. I know some people say the dry treatment will do that, but in my mind it's residue from aluminum belay pieces that gets on the rope. Do you know, BD? Bottom-line, I plan to make this my next rope, it really impressed me.

I recently took it apart and put it in the bag. The product is well made with the caps heat sealed at the ends of the rope itself. The color is very nice even though I already know it won't last long. The rope sock is a little stiff, but being new it fits. During the dismantling phase, I did not detect anomalous twisting and other problems. I will release a full review in a month after using it for about 15 days.

DO NOT BUY THIS ROPE

Just got this rope last month and was very psyched to take it outside for the first time at New Jack City. What's funny is that my climbing partner made a comment about how our other buddy had the same rope and it got core-shot after 3 months, an anecdote I easily laughed off thinking that could never happen to me. Lo and behold, after maybe 15 routes on the first day of the trip, the rope was core-shot. Absolute, mega bummer. Luckily there were other ropes in the crew I was with, so we weren't totally screwed. But, it never feels good to have such an awful first experience with new gear. I repeat, DO NOT BUY THIS ROPE.

Great rope for multi pitching and single pitch crag climbs
7 February 2022

I personally loved the color of this rope, how it stands out from others. I have used once on a 5 pitch route in fair weather. I found hauling the rope was pretty light compared to my previous rope. The rope width also suited my needs.

Initial impressions
25 December 2022

I only have about 20 pitches on this rope and a few falls . It’s very stretchy. Sheath already showing some wear. Hope it holds up to the abuse I intend to inflict on it.

Pros/Cons Honest Review of BD 9.4, 80m Non-Dry
14 April 2018

(Preface - I'm reviewing this right out of the packaging.)FACT: Like other ropes, Black Diamond has contracted a company to make their ropes. You can read the blogs and REI's Mountain Project forums. Also, this product is not made in America (see photo, it's made in CZ). I don't care about that, but others might. I'm not rating this rope on any of that stuff. Here's what I am rating it on.PROS:- Stiff/tight sheath that will keep the diameter skinny.- Price point! No joke. If you've got a coupon, a dividend, it's a good opportunity to try and 80m rope.- The end caps. Some may think this +1 I'm mentioning is stupid, but it matters to me. Out of the bag/bands, I don't need to redo the end caps that so many ropes don't do correctly to make it last. See photo. ... More(Preface - I'm reviewing this right out of the packaging.)FACT: Like other ropes, Black Diamond has contracted a company to make their ropes. Out of the bag/bands, I don't need to redo the end caps that so many ropes don't do correctly to make it last. See photo. I likey likey,- Flies through a famous assisted braking device just like non-assisted braking belay plates. This is especially awesome for me because I know how to use thefamous assisted braking device correctly and can feed just like a non-assisted braking belay plate and only rely on the assisted braking when climber is resting at her/his gear. I like to keep my brake hand away from the devices and this helps with feeding easily and super quickly.- The color! See my photo. It's actually a pretty bright yellow and not a stone ground mustard color. It won't last and probably turn into the Stone Ground Mustard bleh. But it's bright as new and shiney!- The gram weight matches the competition.- REI return policy? =) As with any REI purchase, I would definitely consider that aspect of this purchase.CONS:- Sheath isn't soft and you'll notice when pulling rope to clip. Beware of pulling/clipping burn on your index fingers. Sport climbers, sticky belays, you know what I mean.- Stiff/tight sheath that will keep the diameter skinny is also super tight out of the gate. See the snake coil photo that would just sit there for hours and not relax. It's not as bad as some of the other company's ropes, but it's definitely... um... excited? Maybe running it through gear on weight will chill it out.- Not dry treated. I'm not sure this matters. This is actually my first non-dry treated rope. The feel is similar to other dry-treated cords by BD so I wanted to give it a shot. I'm not doing alpine, I only care about dirt repelling qualities - we'll see.- The middle marker is SERIOUSLY LAUGHABLE. See photo. 1in (or 2.54cm if you're metric). !!! Beware full pitch trad-heads !!! This is a sport climbers rope looking to do 40m routes with lowers or link pitches for enduro-routes.

Solid dynamic rope, great for its price point
24 January 2020

Rope did a fine job as our belay line for a technical climb my project team completed recently. The rock was extrme flaky with numerous chert shelves, which made me a bit nervous, but it did not sustain any abrasion damage (not even fuzzing).Very pleasant diameter, and good weight for its size (70m). Smooth ride when rappelling with an ATC.I'm not sure why other users are complaining about the feel of the sheath. Their hands must be significantly softer than mine...

This is a super comfortable
21 July 2022

This is a super comfortable workhorse shoe. I climb ~100 days a year outside and need something that will put in laps on cruiser easy things, as well as being able to throw down on some harder stuff. Sure, I pull out another pair of shoes for my hardest redpoint attempts, but I have climbed plenty of 5.12- and under routes in these and not wanted to ask for more from them. The rubber is a good combination of sticky and durable, the upper is tough and breathable, and the shoe fits well - size it appropriately.I think that hands down, these are the best entry level/comfy/do everything shoe I have ever used.I think the only take away that I have is that for very long sessions I can get minor chafing from the stitching inside the shoe in a few spots. Used this rope and another
8 August 2022

Used this rope and another of a different brand (they were both out of one of their colors, and I needed two colors) to climb in Tuolumne two weeks ago and they were both great. So light! Great for climbing with 3 people!

Worst rope I've owned
7 January 2023

This is easily the worst rope I've ever owned and had a core shot after ~2mo of light to medium duty sport climbing. And it twists like there's no tomorrow. All around poor quality!
