This is our first rope and so far it has not disappointed. Being new to climbing all I can tell you is it has helped up to the outdoor atmospheres great! It is rugged and has taken some abuse in the field and yet shows no wear. As with all Black Diamond equipment I have purchased it appears to be high quality and exactly what the product descriptions states. I’m would recommend these products for new climbers all around!

Seems plenty durable.I bought the 70 meter rope because I wanted to use it for anything, but honestly that was overkill. It's heavier and takes up more space in my gear bag than I realized. I recommend only buying what you plan to use. This is my mistake and I hope you don't make the same one.

For a non-dry, all-around rope, this is excellent.-9.9mm is perfect for all-around use.-Non-Dry is just fine for gym or outdoor when you know you’re not going to get it wet or subject it to really hard use - no need to waste money on a dry rope if you know you don’t need it!-nice and supple rope- has middle mark-this rope comes in multiple lengths. I got the 40m (which is a length more suited for the gym) because I use this rope when I’m taking kids and beginners and I know we aren’t sending anything higher than 50-60 feet…no need to schlep around 50% more rope when I know I won’t need it!

Drop shipped one of these to where I was staying for my last trip to Red Rock to simplify packing on the way there. I've been a loyal Blue Water rope user for my entire climbing career, so this was the first time I've owned and used a Black Diamond rope - needless to say, I was very impressed. The rope was fairly soft and easy to tie. The sheath held up great and flowed through several different belay devices with no issue over the course a couple weeks usage. Dynamic stretch was great but also not too stretchy like some ropes can be. I can't speak to the longevity and long-term durability of the rope yet, but so-far, so-good.
Bought a 35m 9.9 to use as a gym rope and a 70m 9.9 to use outside - I lead in the gym about once every two weeks, on average, and sport climb outside about once a week on average.When I received the 35m rope, it had a 1-2 inch long sheath defect (thread spool changeover...?). Not a huge deal since it was near an end and I could afford to cut it off. OK, but after only about 10 sessions the sheath began separating from the core, first in just a few places but now (after only 20 gym sessions?) the whole middle 10m of the rope has turned spongy and flat. Not great. I bought the 80m as my all-around rope. I use it in the gym and at the crag for sport climbing. I love the 9.9mm thickness because it makes it easy to belay with but I never worry about it. Mine's held up quite well, though I do make sure to handle it with care, clean it whenever it gets dirty, and check it frequently.My only complaints about this rope are that the end tabs fell off immediately and it tried to fray slightly at one end (but I was able to re-seal it and it's been fine since then). Also, it does have an issue with coiling. I've used mine regularly for months and it still coils (some days worse than others) when trying to lower a lead climber. But, I'm sure that will go away and I'm still happy with the rope.
This is a great rope to get for those just getting into rock climbing and aren’t quite sure what the different verbiage means. It’s a durable rope that has lasted me about 1 year of moderate use on rock climbing trips lasting 2-3 days. 60 m is long enough to where you won’t have to worry about not having enough rope for areas you will probably be visiting as a beginner and can probably carry over to a few more advanced areas as you progress. It’s pretty light weight as well and has been used in mud, rained on, and walked on, but as long as you take care of it where you can, it should last a good while from top rope climbing use and rappelling.
The rope feels good in hand and handles like a wet noodle. However, after only having this rope for 4 months, with only a couple dozen trad/sport days under its belt, the sheath has developed a couple soft spots of which one quickly unraveled into a core shot. The rope has only seen general use wear and not been run over rough edges. The rope is probably fine for someone who will only be using it for occasional light use (gyms or occasional cragging/TR days), but for weekly use from long multi pitch to sport cragging, the quality just isn’t there for me. I love Black Diamond products, but their ropes need a bump in quality to compete with the others on the market.
Great rope for its category. Which is an affordable rope for someone who only plans on doing a ton of cragging, some solo TRing, trips to the gym and maybe a few trips up ElCap in favorable conditions. Not for the mountaineers and big wall in winter crowds. Wouldn’t be my go to for projecting the latest and greatest, cutting edge sic sport proj either. But it will serve you well on your way to achieving such future glory. Supple handle, doesn’t twist much, great abrasion resistance, the girls love it and makes the guys jealous!
I’m a little surprised about how smooth and nice this rope is to handle. I’ve been using this to lead on a weekly basis for the past four months, both in the gym and outdoors, and it’s a much more pleasant rope handling experience than other ropes I’ve handled. I’d almost describe it as buttery. It’s been a great experience overall with it, and I’m definitely considering getting this again once my current rope needs replacing.One thing to note is that this rope is a very vibrant blue, which stands out a lot, compared to most other ropes which are multicolored. Make of that what you will, since it could be a pro or a con depending on your preferences.
