I have run over 100 guided canyoneering trips and a few personal trips with it and it has held up pretty well.I usually have a 130’x8.5mm static rope, a 150’x9mm static rope, small first aid kit, small pouch with rescue gear, 10 carabiners, a couple rappel devices, a few slings, Petzl canyon guide harness (big bulky thing), BD Vapor helmet, liter of water and lunch in the bag. It is VERY full (all but spilling out the top. The top strap is at max length to buckle it) and with all this gear and there really isn’t space for anything else. About 70 trips in the bottom side seams started to almost wear through from scraping on the rocks so I hand sewed a strip of 1.5” ribbed webbing over the seams and recoated it with Through the Roof. I think this bag will last me through this guide season.It fits what I need in the bag, the price is great, and its a pretty good torso length for me. I think I’m going to buy another one and start adding the modifications now so it’s ready for next season.I’d love it if the top strap/triangle thing was a full size, floating brain, also if it was made out of the material that the creek packs are made from, and the pack skirt was a bit more robust. But for the price it’s hard to complain about that stuff.

I already loved the old version of this pack. It is super simple, lightweight but sturdy enough to get thrown around over sandstone every day. It's comfy enough for a long approach, but nothing extra here. This newer version/colorway seems to have a bit sturdier fabrics without sacrificing weight. Great pack.

Maybe one of my all-time favourites for gear! This is my go to, especially for alpine climbing. What? Yeah, it's burly enough for an occasional haul. It's simple. It carries all the gear on the approach. And sure, I don't need 40L for the climb, but I really like not overstuffing my pack on an alpine climb. The side zipper makes it super easy to access any of my gear, without worrying I'm gonna drop something trying to access what's underneath. PLEASE BD...keep this puppy going!
This is a great crag pack! I can stow my rack, 80m rope and a small lunch. The pack fits me just right so that I can still easily dream of big walls while on the ascent trail. It's light enough to still wear while climbing multi pitch trad routes. Built by climbers for climbers. This pack is light, keeps my gear tight and feel right when I climb!
I bought this pack with the intention of hiking in for climbing. Using a few times, I am dedicating it for gear with a moderate hike in and setup a base where I will climb for the day.The pack looks awesome and durable like bd’s larger haul bags and I see it could be used as a junior haul bag.Beware there is no outside water pocket, an inconvenience if you have a considerable hike and need to a swig to rehydrate.The bag will hold gear for the day and I like the access from the side zipper. Gear may get jumbled and become a rats nest
I love the streamlined features of this pack. The cinch top is great and easy to use, the rope strap on top is a functional necessity, and the large tearaway zipper makes accessing the pack a breeze. I like the pocket on the front of the pack and found it handy for stashing a guidebook, snacks, and phone/wallet/keys etc. I even took it as my one bag on a recent trip to NYC. The material of the pack body seems exceptionally solid but time and repeated use and abuse at the crag will tell as to whether it holds up. The one thing I will say is an exterior water bottle pocket seems like a no-brainer to add. Those are the positives. The negatives, for me, lie in how the pack fits me. No matter how tightly I cinch down the hip-belt, it ends up sitting about a full inch (maybe an inch and a half) above my hips, even when loaded down with gear. A bit of a bummer, honestly, because I love everything else about the pack. Especially the price. The componentry (buckles, straps, etc.) is rather basic because of this affordability, but by and large seems fine. Have definitely used it too many times to return it at this point, but overall I am satisfied with the purchase, I just wish that it felt like I was wearing a pack rather than carrying one.
I had the BD Duffel 42 which was great as my gym bag and also a larger 60L pack from another brand. I wanted a lighter weight crag pack that wasn’t huge but had all the features of a good climbing back pack. The BD Crag 40 was just the right thing. Ample size, easy to load and unload with the drawstring top load design and full body zipper. The external “book” pocket is large and holds lots of extras. The internal storage pocket is a bit too small to be useful for much but other than that it’s a great pack. The hip belt and shoulder straps are comfortable for up to 25 lbs or so.
I like this pack very much. It loads easily, carry's well, and it's well built. It has one major but relatively easily fixable flaw. The zipper that opens the pack from the side for access doesn't have a closure at the top which means the zipper has nothing keeping it from unzipping every time the top is opened. I found it unzipped not only when I opened the top flap but sometimes when scrambling through tight areas etc. I simply sewed a buckle at the top to keep the zipper from unzipping. The Stone 45 has a similar button closure at the top and it works great so I don't understand why the crag 40 doesn't have the same design. With the modification it is 5 stars. Without it, I found it frustrating re zipping my pack repeatedly.
I bought this bag a few days ago, absolutely love it. Great bag for a day at the crag, holds all your gear, and more. Chest and waist straps offer great comfort and support when hiking/making your approach to the climbing site. I'd highly recommend this bad for any climber looking for an outdoor day at the crag kinda bag.
