If you’re just getting into the sport or if you’ve been at it for years, the Momentum is a great piece of gear to have in your pack. This was my first harness, and I’m ashamed to admit I didn’t know how to take care of it properly. But despite all my abuse, it held up beautifully for quite a while and lived a long, full life. It’s supported me through so many graceless lead falls. It was comfortable for wearing for a few hours on end and belaying camper after camper after camper. As a thicker thighed woman, sometime the leg straps can shift around and dig into the inner thigh after awkward falls, but that’s my only complaint. I’m also often lighter than my belay partners, so the rear load-bearing loop was essential for anchoring myself while belaying. For my first ... MoreIf you’re just getting into the sport or if you’ve been at it for years, the Momentum is a great piece of gear to have in your pack. But after falling in love with the sport, it was great to see that I was still thrilled with the performance of this harness. It’s a great option for newbies and intermediate climbers. It looses one star for all the large-legged ladies out there, but otherwise I was really in love.

During hikes and backpacking trips we always end up climbing something, bouldering and rappelling something. I typically take my mountaineering harness (Petzl Altitude). It is so compact and light. It fits everywhere. But I wanted something still on the light side but more on the comfortable side. Don't get me wrong, the petzl altitude is awesome for mountaineering. But when you are climbing or anything in the middle of summer and have to hang with it for a while, it gets uncomfortable. So I ended up getting this one. It is a little more bulky than I wanted it to be but works. It is comfortable. It is a good beginner, entry level or climbing on a budget. I will recommend it more as an indoor, GYM sport climbing type of harness. The gear loops are asymmetric and sometimes it feels awkward on lead trad climbs. Due to that asymmetry it does not get a 5 stars from me. But I will definitely recommend it as an entry level.

It's pretty commonly accepted that the BD Momentum ought to be your first harness; either it or the Petzl Corax. I used both and found this one a little more comfortable in the legs when hanging, FWIW. The ONLY reason I dinged it one star is because of the single waist buckle; which, if you are at the cusp of a size range, can cause the belay loop to be off-center. If you ARE at a cusp, I strongly recommend you consider the Momentum 4S, with two waist buckles, assuring your ability to center the belay loop. Either one represents excellent value and will provide you with comfort and performance, indoors and out.

Good little beginner harness. Lightweight. Compact. Good padding. Spent a whole day climbing/rapelling in it with comfort. I chose the wrong size, it works, but I should have gone up a size for a better fit. I still loved it.Currently wear mens pant size 32, purchased harness size M and probably should have purchased Lg...by the time you figure extra space for clothes.Wearing skin tight leggings/climbing pants, the Md was fine. Wearing search and rescue cargo pants was a little rough. So consider your clothing and if you are on the border of the fit, maybe go up a size since there is often overlap in the size ranges with the adjustability of the harness.
I’m a beginner climber and was ready for my own gear. This bundle was perfect! I think it’s a super good deal and worth the money. I got a size small, which fits, and my body type is tall and skinny. The only thing (seriously not a big deal) is that I thought I would get the cute blue chalk bag but I got a red one. I didn’t know other colors were a possibility, but for the price I seriously can’t complain at all. Great product and would for sure recommend!
I bought my first Momentum harness 20 years ago, as a teenager just starting out. While even though it’s a “beginner” harness, there’s nothing about it that says low quality. The thing served me well even after I was no longer a beginner. I used it heavily for sport climbing, canyoneering, ice, you name it. I sent it through the wringer and only retired it because you’re supposed to retire these things after 7 years just to be safe. I then upgraded to a more expensive model but now that I have kids, guess what the first harness I went to for them? The Momentum! Even though it’s a beginner harness, it works amazing and will serve the wearer well even after “moving up” in skill level.
This is a good harness for beginner and intermediate climbers, with good features and a relatively comfortable fit, at a great price. If you spend a lot of time hanging in the harness projecting sport routes, there are more comfortable harnesses out there. Also, the gear loops could be bigger, and there aren't slots for ice clippers. Overall a good entry level harness for climbers interested in upping their game.
Based on the sizing specs, I tried this in a Medium, but I could not fully tighten up the waist and legs (kinda loose; not 'safe' snug). So I returned and picked up a Small. Strangely, on the Small I must open the waist strap as wide as it goes and even then I can just barely barely barely get it on over my (not particularly large) hips/butt with some aggressive wiggling and writhing, after which the remaining tag end of the waist strap is so snugged up to the buckle it's difficult to get enough finger purchase to back-strap for a proper fit. Can I make it work? Yeah, with some effort. But I'd like to burn my calories while climbing not while harnessing up. I plan to now return the small, go into a store and try other brands for a more reasonable fit and hopefully ... MoreBased on the sizing specs, I tried this in a Medium, but I could not fully tighten up the waist and legs (kinda loose; not 'safe' snug). I plan to now return the small, go into a store and try other brands for a more reasonable fit and hopefully somewhat easier on-off mechanics. Other than this issue, which I admit might be unique to me at 165 pounds, 5'10", 32 inch pants size, generally trim and fit but--being in my 60s--not sporting rock hard abs, this would be a fine harness for the gym climbing I want it for. My recommendation would be to buy in person if possible or be prepared for some return-and-exchange shenanigans (which, thankfully, REI does make incredibly easy).
Just wanted to let folks know that the sizing for this harness seems to run small. I wear size 34 pants and purchased this harness in size Large sized for waist sizes 33-36in. Unfortunately the harness is too small for me as there is a substantial gap in the padding of the waistbelt, causing the back of the harness to rest unevenly. I will have to return and size up. If you can, try this harness on before buying to make sure you have the right fit!
For a first harness or general harness this one is great. Comfortable for long hangs, durable, intuitive. For sizing, I am a 32 waist and ordered a large, probably should be in a medium as I have to tighten all the way to make it fit.My concerns with it are size of gear loops. Fitting a whole trad rack on these loops would be ambitious. I would not recommend it for mutlipitch either. However, if you are looking for a gym harness, capable to transitioning to outdoor TR/sport, and with good comfort and durability, this is an amazing option.
