There are many aspects of this headlamp that I love... small details like the headband material/quality and cut do a great job while shaving ounces. The light itself is bright, and I like multiple buttons to control it. My only nitpick actually affects me a lot. The red lamp isn't very bright. At night, hiking down a trail, if you use the white light the bugs can become hellacious swarming your head. A red lamp mitigates this, but this one isn't quite powerful enough to really read the trail well. Coming down the trail after sunset in Zion, I mis-judged rocks multiple times and stumbled. My partner had a brighter red lamp and did just fine. So... keeping it, but every time there are bugs and I have to navigate a trail with the red lamp I'm going to be cursing.

The light intensity I was able to sample side by side with other competitors and the intensity was equal. The biggest difference is the focus of the beam. The competitors was a bit more focused, where the 400-R is a wider more peripheral beam. Regardless of your interest there is ample light when in max. The dimming function was what I was impressed most with. With the leading competitors brand it has a step down staging affect each time you press the button, whereas the 400-R can give you whatever light intensity you prefer by simply pressing and holding the button. The button itself is designed so its raised feature has an ease of locating aspect to it. This makes it much easier to find your button if you are wearing gloves. The mode button was recessed a little so it was a bit more challenging with gloves, but given the raised button for the on off light intensity adjustment, which is right next to it, I easily got used to its location. A unique feature for this device is the touch sensing min max option. With this feature you simply graze your finger (doesn't work with gloves very well) on the bottom right side and it takes the beam in whatever mode (red, single beams and combined beam) and adjust to max or min with each touch. This actually helped to save on my battery life once I got used to it. The tilting of the 400-R is on par with other leading brands but has a tension type vs a ratcheting action which gives you whatever angle you want with ease. The memory function took a little figuring out. I thought there was a button pressing code but it really just came down to whatever mode or intensity you leave off on the light will return to that intensity when you turn it on again. This feature is nice because you always can have your fine tuned preferred adjustment. The SOS function was a bit of a disappointment. You have to use the touch feature for the SOS yourself and it is very difficult to get the right sequence right, plus if I was trying to get a rescuers attention wouldn't I want to have a brighter light? The waterproof function was by far the biggest standout for me. Other competitors headlamps don't give very many choices for waterproof features at this level, and especially at this price point. This is by far the best feature in my opinion. I used this light in the poring rain and it stood up just fine. The battery life goes fast in the max mode...I would say about 3 hours by my estimates. In summary this small, lightweight, full of options headlamp is a win!!!...and at this price point makes it by far a leader in this category of headlamps! I look forward to making this my primary headlamp for future adventures and hope the more than a thousand charges holds true. Being factory sealed, there would be no way to replace the battery unless you RMA'd it...which would help prevent it from being yet another filler for the landfills. Thanks' Black Diamond for this one!(PS I tried to video the comparison on my GoPro but it was too dark for the results to give you much perspective)

Great Headlamp Upgrade

I was given the opportunity to review the Black Diamond 400 Lumen Spot R and I jumped at it. I’ve been wanting a rechargeable headlamp for quite some time. My wife and I have older versions of the Black Diamond headlamps and for the most part they are great. The only issues we’ve had is that we never used the full features because they were just too complicated. We were also getting tired of having to change out and charge the batteries along with packing enough extra batteries for both lights. The Spot R flashlight fixes all of my issues with the previous lights. It is finally intuitive. The rechargeable internal battery is great as well and bonus it has a power indicator. The only thing I don’t like is that I’m really trying to convert all of my electronic connections to USB-C so I can carry less cables. Sadly they didn’t go that way. Instead the connection is micro usb.All in all, this is a great headlamp. Very bright and easy to use when you need it and very compact. I think this is going to be a great around camp light but also great for backpacking and running.

Great for Night Photography

This feature is welcomed when using the infrared setting in either night photography or night sky viewing, as it preserves you night vision. For navigation a darkened route to the camp latrine you can switch between the 400 or 200 lumens and it's waterproof if you get caught in a rainstorm. I use it to read at night in a camper van - keep your bed partner happy! - and used it to fix the garbage disposal in the dark recesses under the sink. At 2.7 ounces you'll hardly know it's on your head with the comfortable, elastic headband. As for burn time, Full power will get you 4 hrs, mid-power 8 hrs and low power will give you 225 hrs. My test unit is rechargeable and that seals the deal for outdoor activities with recharging through a USB port. Available in red (for those of us digging into a dark backpack) and black, the Spot 400-R is $48.69 at REI through 5/30/22. Grab one!

Probably the Only Headlamp You’ll Ever Need

At first glance I was concerned about the comfort of this headlamp. The base that rests against your forehead is hard plastic. But the strap passing through seems to act as padding, becausethis turned out to not be uncomfortable at all. This headlamp features three lighting modes you can switch between with a dedicated button. A distance mode, which is like a spotlight. Proximity mode, for area lighting. And a red mode for maintaining your night vision and not blinding others with a glaring light in their eyes. The proximity mode is great for lighting up your immediate surroundings, like doing chores around camp, or lighting up the area around you on the trail. Where the distance mode shines bright up ahead of you. All in all, the different modes make this a very versatile headlamp. At 400 lumens this light is bright, and the brightness is adjustable by holding down the power button. It gradually cycles through the brightness allowing you to dial in the amount of light that’s right for you. And it remembers where you have your brightness level set so you don’t have to cycle through each time you power up or switch modes.Probably my favorite feature, is sometimes the most frustrating. On the side is what Black Diamond calls Power Tap. It lets you instantly switch between two different brightness levels. Kind of like switching between low and high beams in your car. I have mine set up where I start out with proximity, for a nice ambient lighting and with just a tap, it goes to a bright spotlight. The frustrating part is the switch for the power tap is really small and sometimes you have to tap it a couple of times to hit it just right to activate. But that is a minor inconvenience and I imagine I will get used to it over time.Other than the power tap button being a little finicky, this thing is very easy to operate. Easy to switch between modes, easy to adjust brightness levels, and easy to activate the strobe feature by double tapping the power button. If you hold down the power and mode buttons at the same time for a couple of seconds you can lock the lamp to prevent accidentally turning it on while stuffed in your pack. Repeat the process to unlock.Rechargeable, lightweight, comfortable, bright, adjustable, and easy to use. I can’t imagine myself ever needing another headlamp again.

Some Important Flaws
25 February 2023

This headlamp is good, but that's frustrating because it could be great. 1st issue: Clearly inefficient charging circuitry. The headlamp gets very warm when charging. If you're in the backcountry charging from a battery bank this is not great. 2nd issue: Relatively slow charging. This probably comes back to cheaper charging circuitry. 3rd issue: USB-B micro port. Almost everything in the world is becoming standardized around USB-C and carrying a single cable would be nice. It's not a bad headlamp, but would be a solid 6 stars had they just gone the extra mile with the circuit board.

Let me start with what really sets this apart from other headlamps for me. It’s the way the red light functionality is set up. First is it dimmable. Other headlamps I own this is not the case. Second when powering on, the headlamp will return to the same red light configuration as was set when the light was turned off – without any white light at all. The Fenix HL60R I own, flashes the white light (to indicate the battery’s state of charge) and then returns to the red light setting. Not having the white light when powering off at night or before dawn allows me to have my light on while minimizing disturbing others. The headband is easily adjustable. Not having the white light when powering off at night or before dawn allows me to have my light on while minimizing disturbing others. The headband is easily adjustable. I have worn this more than 2.5 hours without any discomfort. The state of charge of the battery is indicated when powering down by three small LEDs on the side of the lamp.I have gone more than 7 hours at the 200 lumens-level without at recharge. This is plenty of light for me to move around in the dark. However, a tap on the side of the lamp immediately moves it to max brightness (400 lumens) regardless of the white light setting. Tapping on the side in the red light mode move it to max red light setting.I have not used this in the rain – or kayaking!!, but the headlamp is rated IP67 meaning that the lamp is submersible for at least 30 minutes. The buttons are complete underneath a plastic cover, so there is no opportunity for water ingress there. The USB charge port is found underneath a small door. When the door is closed, a small plastic protrusion fills the USB port which is how water is preventing from entering there. The lamp can be rotated downwards about 30 degrees to better see the trail immediately in front of you. It’s also a good angle for reading. The lamp can easily be set to flashing – SOS even – in either the white or red light. The one thing I wasn’t happy with it the length of the supplied USB cord. It is only about 6 inches long. A longer cord would allow the lamp to be placed in more secure or convenient when charging. Also since the lamp can be illuminated while charging a longer cord would allow me to use this attached to me backpack strap and being charged from a small battery in my backpack or pocket. I will have to get a longer cable to use it in this configuration.Overall quite happy with the headlamp and it’s feature.

The perfect balance
5 April 2023

I did quite a bit of research when looking for a new headlamp to replace my old weak one.I wanted something compact for traveling, light for running, durable for camping and bright for winter skiing. This light ticks all these boxes. I was skeptical about the rechargeability since I always thought that batteries was better since you could swap them for infinite runtime. However, the battery life of this lamp appears to be the longest of other comparable lamps (pietzl artik core and biolite 425) and should be more than enough. On longer trips, I would bring an external battery anyways. If you want a light specific for running, the biolite 425 probably feels more balanced on the head because of its battery pack on the back. The petzl would be good if you really want ... MoreI did quite a bit of research when looking for a new headlamp to replace my old weak one.I wanted something compact for traveling, light for running, durable for camping and bright for winter skiing. This light ticks all these boxes. Well made headlamp that's almost perfect

This headlamp has a great balance of weight to performance, lasts long enough without feeling like you've got a giant rock strapped to your forehead. Strap is strong, soft, stretchy, and comfortable. The headlamp itself has every feature I think you could possibly want, and then some. The obvious caveat about rechargeable vs battery-operated notwithstanding, if you are looking for a USB headlamp this is a great option. It tilts, has red night light and two white light modes, and the controls are fairly intuitive after a while. The only feature I can't get the hang of is the touch control for the "SpotR" super bright blast, but I don't really see myself using that anyway so I'm willing to write it off as a gimmick I can ignore. Overall, excellent product.
