I bought this headlamp as a replacement to a previous Black Diamond headlamp, which I had for years. This new design on the Storm is GREAT. I recently did a Sunrise hike with my pup, and it was the first time I used this headlamp on the trail. Here are a few of the key points I loved.- Very Bright: The headlamp was able to light up the entire trail, and I actually lowered the setting a bit. The buttons were also very easy to operate, and adjust the brightness.- Easy to adjust Headband: had to readjust a few times, when I put on and took off my knit hat. The band was super easy to adjust and make comfortable through the hike.- Battery Life: I was in the dark for over 4 hours on the same batteries. The LED battery level indicators, also made it very easy to see ... MoreI bought this headlamp as a replacement to a previous Black Diamond headlamp, which I had for years. Sometimes that was tough with cold or wet hand. Near impossible with gloves. The new design allows for much easier battery change out.

Like many other reviewers stated (not on Black Diamonds website weirdly enough), the battery door latch broke off. I hadn't even used it yet. I don't even know how it happened. I didn't use excessive force. The plastic where the latch attaches to the main body of the headlamp is so thin. Even if yours isn't broken, it will be eventually. DO NOT BUY. I contacted Black Diamond customer service and they were useless. It took a week to get back to me and they wanted a ton of information including original receipt and I needed to pay shipping to send it to them so that they may look at it. I told them this is a KNOWN and COMMON problem. They said nothing about that. I sell these at a store I work at. I will not recommend Black Diamond to any customer. Shame.

The Black Diamond Storm 450 is an Extremely Bright Full Function Headlamp. It has a setting for 'Close Proximity' Lighting use which is especially useful for things you are doing with your hands like cooking etc. and has a setting for 'FurtherDistance' Lighting where you may be looking ahead when scouting out a campsite in the dark or when looking ahead down the trail etc. Both settings have a Dimmer option to Decrease or Increase the Brightness. The Storm 450 will remember the last setting you were using and doesn't make you cycle thru all the settings to get you back to where you were. The Storm 450 also has 3 Night Vision Options with Red, Green and Blue Colours. The 3 Night Vision settings also have a Dimmer Option to Decrease or Increase the Night Vision ... Pros: Great head lamp. I use it for both work and activities. There are three different led diodes, a spot, a proximity, and tri colour night-vision led which all can strobe. The headlamp is comfortable and light weight, it doesn't bounce or move while being worn. Having a tilt feature is pretty nice which I cannot live without. I currently own 3.Cons: The latch is weak and prone to breaking. The latch on my first Storm 450 snapped during the first-time that I attempted to close it. Apparently, it's a manufacture defect were the pin which holds the hinge is too tight that prevents the latch from moving causing the centre of the latch to snap. If the latch on yours doesn't move easy than return it. One good thing is the manufacture sent me a replacement.
This is my second one I had to return . The first one changed the battery in the middle of a 48 hour race the clip hook broke after the first time I changed the battery. Returned it got another and on day two of a 72 hour race I went to change the rechargeable batter and it broke so sad since I bought 4 recharge batteries for it.I love my storm R recharge so got a second one.You need to redesign the closure .FYI I know of 3 other runners who’s same headlamp broke during a ultra when changing the battery .I have another headlamp with a snap closure and no issues so maybe go back to that type of closure.
I bought my first one in December. Put the batteries in and tried to shut it and the latch broke immediately. I never even got to turn it on. I have just opened my new one. I needed a screwdriver to open it. I put the batteries in and now can't get it closed. I have to press down very hard and the lip of the latch is angled so you have to press on the latch to get it to grab. I have yet to achieve a close, it is practically impossible. This is also putting a lot of pressure on the joint of the latch, which will cause it to break. I am about to return this one while I can still get my money back or store credit. It is a shame, I thought the features of the headlamp were great, it is unfortunate that this latch is so poorly made. For the money I would go for the ... MoreI bought my first one in December. I've had more BD headlamps than I can remember. This new Storm 450R (purchased Sept 2022) has one major issue with it. I imagine this applies to their entire new R line of rechargeable headlamps. The tiny blue dots that indicate charge level have been placed directly above the eyes. They surely did this so the user can quickly glance up and view the charge level. But, every time the headlamp is turned on and off, the blue lights light up to indicate the remaining charge level by default. This is very bothersome and interferes with vision, as they're relatively very bright being that close to the eyes. They're almost direct right at the eyes. Hopefully BD moves these lights to a different location on their next redesign. As for every other aspect of the headlamp, I ... MoreI've had more BD headlamps than I can remember. Hopefully BD moves these lights to a different location on their next redesign. As for every other aspect of the headlamp, I can't comment much as I've only been using it for about 2 weeks now. I was also surprised to find this headlamp line has sealed batteries, as all the rechargeable BD headlamps that I've used before were duel fuel, meaning you can swap out the rechargeable for standard AA batteries. But, I'm sure there's benefits to this new design. Also, they still offer duel fuel headlamps, but look closely. I did not.
The lamp functionality is awesome but unfortunately the latch mechanism breaks very very easily. The latch broke in the parking lot of Cabelas when I put batteries in it. I returned it for a new lamp hoping the original was damaged in the box. I carefully inspected the latch on the second lamp to confirm it was intact out of the box which it was. I carefully opened it, installed batteries and closed the latch. It cracked immediately and then completely broke. I returned it and bought the cosmos which has a much better latch. Stay away from the Storm until the latch design is fixed. Functionality of the lamp is great otherwise.
positives, Brightnessas noted in title. smaller and brighter.waterproof, but note their recommendation to open and dry if submerged.green and blue colors available at low settings in addition to red.lock 'off' function. don't know how many batteries I have wasted with my economy competitors.Negative:1st unit did not close right but Kudos to the moose for effortless replacement.shorter battery life than prior model due to battery count.High durability rating is from use of prior model, and general perception of the quality.
