A competent switcher with Blackmagic quirks.

That's exactly what you get with the ATEM Mini Pro.We used it as a live stream switcher for an event - two cameras and one laptop - and we were absolutely amazed at how well it worked for what we did. Once we had it hooked up to stream out, we were able to run the stream just by hooking into the house network, no other hardware needed.Except... when we needed to luma key some titles. We realized we couldn't switch them on without using the laptop. Nor could we adjust the audio gains. And the keying would lose its settings when we turned it on and off. And the framerate would jump around. And...It works. It's great for the money. An improvement over the original, but still needs some work

The output selection buttons are a HUGE improvement over the original, allowing you to monitor any input, the program output, or Blackmagic's custom multiview, all by just pressing a simple button on the unit. The multiview is one of the best I've used and is completely customizable via the free software. Additionally, the ability to record straight out of the unit to an external SSD is great... that is, when you're either not streaming, or when you have sufficient signal to stream directly from the box. That's where we get to the not-so-good. Blackmagic provides three options for stream quality, all of which are 1080p/60 or 1080p/30, at anywhere from 3,500-10,000 Kbps. In practice, this means that if your WiFi connection is unstable, or if you are in a location where the internet signal dips occasionally, the unit begins to cache the feed (where a software encoder would begin dropping frames). You don't realize it's happening until the unit begins to flash that it's caching and the memory is roughly 40% full. Blackmagic doesn't give the specs on how much flash memory is built-in, but I can assume it's not much, as it goes from 40% to 100% in just a few minutes. Once the cache is full, the unit ceases to stream and the buttons become unresponsive. In the short time I've owned it, I've had two streams completely drop due to inadequate signal and had to change the cabling, connecting the USB-C cable and launching OBS as I would have with the original ATEM Mini. If you're trying to record the stream, you now have to do that via OBS, as the USB-C port is the only way to feed the video signal into the computer.Several on the BMD forums have discussed editing the XML file to create a custom stream setting, but so far I haven't been able to get anything working to consistently stream directly from the box. Until they get this worked out, assume that you'll still be using OBS (or similar) anytime you're on a less than stellar internet signal. If you already have an original ATEM Mini, I'd wait for BMD to work out the kinks before upgrading to the new box. If you absolutely need multiview or are working in an environment where you have consistently fantastic upstream internet signal, then this would be a great box.

Disappointed

I own the Blackmagic Atem Mini, which is an excellent piece of equipment. When the Pro version came out, I ordered it immediately as the previous version has been a benefit to my professional work. After a long six week wait, it finally arrived. Unfortunately, my unit came with a cheap non-locking power supply plug, whereas the original Atem Mini comes with the higher quality metal locking components. The importance of this part, especially in professional environments, is that your stream cannot be interrupted by someone pulling the power supply out. The locking mechanism is crucial, and I expected the professional PRO version to be the same or better quality. The locking mechanism is crucial, and I expected the professional PRO version to be the same or better quality. It was not.I immediately contacted Blackmagic, and I expected them to be understanding since they claim to support professionals. While they attribute the modification to a shortage of parts, they would not take responsibility for the lower quality components, or the inconsistent product experience. They only admitted that some came with the non-locking power supplies, and some did not. When asked if they would replace the less expensive components for professionals that did require them, they couldn't give me an answer. It seems that neither B&H nor Blackmagic is interested in taking on the responsibility to ensure the product quality is consistent. Nor are they willing to ensure customer satisfaction for their professional customers. My advice is DO NOT buy this device until you can confirm with B&H that the unit you receive will not come with the sub-standard part. Make sure you get this in writing so that they cannot make you keep a cheapened product. Insist on getting the product that we all paid for.I will be returning my unit until Blackmagic and B&H figure this out.

Gamechanger but with significant audio frustration
14 September 2020

This really is a gamechanger especially in the era of streaming due to Covid. Be warned that if you are using an audio console to mix your sound (i.e. for a live event like a seminar or church service), you will need to spend a little more money and time to find a solution that works for you. You can't simply plug in a balanced line output stepped down with an adapter, because for some strange reason they made the 'mic' inputs UNbalanced stereo 1/8 with selectable mic/line that aren't typical mic or line levels as you'd expect. A search through forums reveals there aren't many tried and true solutions out there yet, so be aware it's an issue for those with mixers. A search through forums reveals there aren't many tried and true solutions out there yet, so be aware it's an issue for those with mixers. I've ended up with quite a bit of noise I can't squash with the appropriate direct boxes. They expect you to run your mics through the cameras, but this isn't always practical in a live event environment. Also be warned that HDMI is known for latency, and while there is built-in audio delay, it's not always sufficient to address the issue.A big plus for this is the USB out to computer, which makes interfacing with streaming software very easy. If you already have a pro switcher and just need a way to capture live, this will do the trick and also serve as a decent backup switcher. Just make sure your audio is already embedded in the HDMI.One downside to this connectivity is you can't record to disk AND stream to computer since it uses the same USB port. You'd presumably be using third-party software like OBS anyway, so you'd just need to record through the software. Makes the record feature obsolete though.Bottom line, keep your expectations in check. It's a gamechanger for podcasters and Youtubers, but comes with frustration for event-based environments. This thing is very capable and with the right improvements will absolutely kill.

Great recorder/livestreamer for gameplay too
7 July 2021

Supports livestream to any RTMP services with configurable compression settings via XML file. Up to 1080p60 at 25 MBps.Almost great for recording gameplay. HDMI 1 port has direct mode to keep latency as low as possible. Even when I am not using HDMI 1 port for gaming, latency is probably within 1-2 frames (16-33 ms).P-in-P only works for HDMI 1 input. That means, your camera will connect to HDMI 1, and your console on HDMI 2-4. But as I mentioned, HDMI 1 support direct mode and should be used for your console instead. So you can either do P-in-P, or low latency, but not both.Since ATEM Mini Pro does not decode 5.1 or Atmos audio, you will need to configure your console to use stereo output instead. So far it's great for livestreaming gameplays as 1080p60 and ... MoreSupports livestream to any RTMP services with configurable compression settings via XML file. Review for Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini Pro - We Like It
13 November 2022

This switcher does exactly what it says. There are a few things that make it less than perfect. HDMI #1 works perfectly with my camera, but if I place the camera cable in #2-4, the screen flickers. So I exclusively use #1 for camera. I'm not sure if this needs to be fixed. There were a few times the switcher seemed to be stuck in processing (cannot turn on/off stream). I pulled out plug to turn it off/on.Although I got this last issue resolved by watching some YouTube videos, there was a buzzing sound from the microphone connection. I discovered you have to change the default setting for audio to line in.Great Product!

Serious power in a small package
20 October 2022

The ATEM Mini Pro works as a capture card, cam link, and encoder ALL-IN-ONE. It does far more than this and I'd encourage watching detailed video on it. There are several great ones on YouTube. This is a POWERFUL system in a small format. Go live, tweak audio, do picture in picture, do chroma key, and SO MUCH MORE, with one set-up.Of course, I cannot tell you all the good and why I only gave it a four-star rather than five-star without saying anything bad about it. There are two down sides to this particular device. The FIRST is that it offers no USB connection aside from the device you are connecting to. In my case, that's my computer. The SECOND is that it does not offer XLR connection for the two mic inputs this device has. Plus it's USB output looks like a USB camera to a hot PC, perfect for video conferencing software.I have used OBS Studio the free cooperatively developed software control room video switcher application which is also very feature rich. You can't beat it for price. That said, you will need expensive HDMI to USB dongles to use any serious camera/video feeds. Its shortcomings include having to create scenes for each video source you want to switch, and no quick way to make the switch without mousing around. And for streaming to a social media platform you have to rely upon a host computer. All of those shortcomings are why I decided to invest in the ATEM Mini Pro. Plus it can output an HDMI feed to a local audience monitor, will provide a similar multi-monitor view. And, if you have a more complex production you can set up additional computers with personnel to handle different aspects such as graphics, camera shading, switching, or audio processing. It'll also do audio follow video by itself and give you onboard level control and a full suite of audio processing within the computer app!If you're looking to expand your control room experience, BMD has control surfaces that look like full production vision mixers that will use the ATEM Mini Pro as the main video hardware. What's not to like? The unit does run quite warm, always a concern in a warm environment. It has plenty of vent holes for some cooling but that also makes in more vulnerable to moisture and water damage. Do not permit liquid refreshments to be nearby. The bigger rubber push-buttons are a bit squishy for my taste. Hard plastic buttons similar to what we've always seen on broadcast vision switchers would have a more robust feel.Anyhow, I'm using it to expand presentations via video conference apps and for planned live broadcasts of theatrical and religious events while the pandemic limits real live audiences.By using one or more WiFi wireless links cameras can be placed a good distance apart in a venue for different viewpoints such as a balcony wide-angle shot and effortlessly switched with closeup and other view angles.I haven't tested it yet as a live streaming device. It's links to the outside world are USB where it can share a computer's Internet connection or CAT-5/6 copper cable to the local router, the more secure and stable way to get on-line.Well designed and very versatile, I give it a five star rating for functionality at the price point and excellent design.

They won this customer over for sure. Maybe I could even get a little cheaper at times, though not often, but I will opt for B&H Photo because of their sales and support. Thank you folks.
