A competent switcher with Blackmagic quirks.

Once we had it hooked up to stream out, we were able to run the stream just by hooking into the house network, no other hardware needed.Except... when we needed to luma key some titles. We realized we couldn't switch them on without using the laptop. Nor could we adjust the audio gains. And the keying would lose its settings when we turned it on and off. Sometimes one camera would not show up, because for example, it might treat 24p as 24 versus 23.976, and that ATEM production 4K would not know how to handle it. With the ATEM Mini, I've connected 4 totally different brands of cameras at once, and they all show up immediately with no problem - such as a Nikon, Sony, Panasonic along with a PTZ camera.I bought the regular Mini, as the Pro was out of stock earlier, but I may have to get the Pro as well!My only two problems with it: 1) I wish it had ONE extra assignable output. I like to use the HDMI output to output the Program to an external recorder, and it would be nice to have another one for Preview. Even with the Pro, where you can assign the HDMI to Multiview, then you cannot send the Program feed to a recorder, you would have to record directly in the computer via the USB. So overall, there is no way have a multiview, program output, and use as a webcam on computer at the same time. For the regular Mini, even without a multivew, if you had another output, you could at least see the Preview and Program at the same time. Though that would be a lot to ask for under 300 dollars!I also wish it had a power switch, instead of just unplugging the power cable to turn it off.Overall, incredible features for the price, and reliable as ever for a Blackmagic switcher!

Outstanding for Online Classroom Applications
22 September 2022

I am using this as for online classroom applications, and this device excels in this role. The problem I faced was how to switch between a multiple video and audio sources (i.e. a camera on me as I deliver a lecture and a PowerPoint presentation, videos, etc on a computer source) rapidly and seamlessly, eliminating the OK, hang on, let me share my screen segment of the program. This device does it flawlessly. Once you learn it, the controls are extremely intuitive. Being able to rapidly shift from the PowerPoint to a shot of me to secondary AV aids in a fairly rapid-fire manner creates a dramatically more engaging and dynamic online classroom experience for my students, and having the ability to control the picture-in-picture location and quickly adjust or mute ... MoreI am using this as for online classroom applications, and this device excels in this role. The software is effective, but inelegant. The hardware is a little on the plastic-y side and gets quite hot after a few hours of use. A power switch is noticeably absent, as is a printed manual. Audio inputs besides 1/8 TRS would be welcome. A hardware audio output level monitor would remove a lot of guesswork. All that said, this does exactly what I wanted it to do, does it reliably, and is simple enough to allow me to focus on my lecture- all at a very reasonable cost. I would never instruct online again without it.

Reliable hardware switching; software needs a little work
13 September 2021

I'm currently using the basic ATEM Mini to produce multi-camera live streams from my home office. Overall, I've been quite happy with its performance. Switching sources using the hardware controller is rock solid (I'll speak to software control momentarily). My four sources include: Panasonic GH3; Panasonic G9; GoPro Hero 7 Black; 9.7 iPad Pro. Switching is nearly instantaneous and artifact-free.While many other reviewers have bemoaned the ATEM Mini's lack of a multiviewer, I'd realized before purchasing that I'd have to upgrade to the ATEM Mini Pro if I needed this feature. While it would be nice to have, something had to give in order to meet a $300 price point. You're getting solid 4 camera switching and a fairly powerful DVE for this price - hard to fault that.My one issue so far is with the ATEM Mini's software-based controller. Some of the Mini's more powerful features are only accessible using the software controller. However, whenever I run the software controller while broadcasting a livestream, artifacts and hits begin to appear in video output. As soon as I close the software controller, video output is clean. I have yet to determine if this is a firmware issue or a problem specific to my PC's USB hardware. Either way, it hasn't been a huge issue for me and is something which may be corrected with a future firmware update (you can find posts about this issue on Blackmagic's user forums). If you're in need of a straightforward way to switch between multiple video sources for livestreaming or (very) basic multicam production, it's hard not to recommend the ATEM Mini at its current price.

Review for Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini Pro - We Like It
13 November 2022

This switcher does exactly what it says. There are a few things that make it less than perfect. HDMI #1 works perfectly with my camera, but if I place the camera cable in #2-4, the screen flickers. So I exclusively use #1 for camera. I'm not sure if this needs to be fixed. There were a few times the switcher seemed to be stuck in processing (cannot turn on/off stream). I pulled out plug to turn it off/on.Although I got this last issue resolved by watching some YouTube videos, there was a buzzing sound from the microphone connection. I discovered you have to change the default setting for audio to line in.Great Product!

Serious power in a small package
20 October 2022

The ATEM Mini Pro works as a capture card, cam link, and encoder ALL-IN-ONE. It does far more than this and I'd encourage watching detailed video on it. There are several great ones on YouTube. This is a POWERFUL system in a small format. Go live, tweak audio, do picture in picture, do chroma key, and SO MUCH MORE, with one set-up.Of course, I cannot tell you all the good and why I only gave it a four-star rather than five-star without saying anything bad about it. There are two down sides to this particular device. The FIRST is that it offers no USB connection aside from the device you are connecting to. In my case, that's my computer. The SECOND is that it does not offer XLR connection for the two mic inputs this device has. Small Business, New to Video Production, Great Product, Easy Setup
3 August 2020

I've been slowly building a video studio for the last few months to help alleviate cancellations for our business related to in person training, which has accounted for a significant portion of our income prior to Covid-19. I did not know a lot about this process, and ordered the ATEM Mini to run a 4 camera studio capable of production style video recording and live streaming. The ATEM Mini was out of stock for months, so I made due without it and had to devise many "work-arounds" and push the limits of my hardware. Set up has been painful, with nearly everything we've done requiring significant learning curves. FINALLY, this piece of hardware showed up last week and it was the absolute easiest set up. I literally plugged it in, and connected everything up, and it just worked. I'm just learning the software control system and have been equally as pleased. Not to mention, I paid for software to do some basic editing and then learned that had I received this in a more timely manner, there was already a great piecing of editing software for free, that would have done everything the platform I paid for did. Additionally, we could have saved money in the way of Capture Cards for various cameras, audio equipment changes, and various forms of cables, along with probably 2 weeks worth of pain and suffering in troubleshooting work arounds. We did not run all our camera inputs through the Mini due to limitations for this model in having versatile screen in a screen views. The software controls may help this situation a bit. We also had to buy a second small monitor and while it looks like the software control will give me the multi-view access to all my views that I want, I haven't set up that feature yet. These, however, are not features the ATEM mini is lacking, they are available on more expensive models and that was well spelled out before we purchased. For what we were looking for, $295 was a STEAL. And, I only wish I had had access to this from the start. I'm excited to incorporate it's use into our video production and can't emphasize enough that the set up was a breeze (when the set up of nearly everything else, was not). Since we were using a laptop as our computer system, we had some limitations, including internal processing capacity for all the USB sources, which continually crashed our production software. We looked at different production softwares and they all reported the same thing. Only 2 HDMI sources on Capture cards can be run directly through a laptop to get all the streams to show up at the same time. Options included either custom building a desktop computer with other Decklink ports (which is a great idea, but not necessary with the ATEM Mini), or...get a Switcher and run some of our sources there, having them share one of the laptop ports. Since we were only missing 2 Camera views of the 4 we needed, the ATEM mini was the solution. Now, we have our 3 views running through the ATEM and everything is there. I just need to get comfortable switching to the view I want. I'm happy. I also found a tutorial online for hooking up my ATEM control to a Stream Deck, so I can run it remotely and possibly do all of the production myself, onsite, without having to have a second person on staff to help with the workshops we need to stream. I'm looking forward to learning this more in the coming days. I hope it is a straightforward as it looks as well.

Plus it's USB output looks like a USB camera to a hot PC, perfect for video conferencing software.I have used OBS Studio the free cooperatively developed software control room video switcher application which is also very feature rich. You can't beat it for price. That said, you will need expensive HDMI to USB dongles to use any serious camera/video feeds. Its shortcomings include having to create scenes for each video source you want to switch, and no quick way to make the switch without mousing around. And for streaming to a social media platform you have to rely upon a host computer. All of those shortcomings are why I decided to invest in the ATEM Mini Pro. Plus it can output an HDMI feed to a local audience monitor, will provide a similar multi-monitor view. And, if you have a more complex production you can set up additional computers with personnel to handle different aspects such as graphics, camera shading, switching, or audio processing. It'll also do audio follow video by itself and give you onboard level control and a full suite of audio processing within the computer app!If you're looking to expand your control room experience, BMD has control surfaces that look like full production vision mixers that will use the ATEM Mini Pro as the main video hardware. What's not to like? The unit does run quite warm, always a concern in a warm environment. It has plenty of vent holes for some cooling but that also makes in more vulnerable to moisture and water damage. Do not permit liquid refreshments to be nearby. The bigger rubber push-buttons are a bit squishy for my taste. Hard plastic buttons similar to what we've always seen on broadcast vision switchers would have a more robust feel.Anyhow, I'm using it to expand presentations via video conference apps and for planned live broadcasts of theatrical and religious events while the pandemic limits real live audiences.By using one or more WiFi wireless links cameras can be placed a good distance apart in a venue for different viewpoints such as a balcony wide-angle shot and effortlessly switched with closeup and other view angles.I haven't tested it yet as a live streaming device. It's links to the outside world are USB where it can share a computer's Internet connection or CAT-5/6 copper cable to the local router, the more secure and stable way to get on-line.Well designed and very versatile, I give it a five star rating for functionality at the price point and excellent design.

We originally purchased a unit just after the price reduction. It was defective right out of the box. Even though it took us a while to determine that there was nothing that we could do, B&H graciously allowed us to return the item an sent us a new ATEM MINI PRO.The new unit has performed as advertised from the moment I unboxed it.Our live stream had suffered from all kinds of defects because the rendering computer was not up to the task. The renderer in the ATEM Mini Pro, whether online live stream or streaming to the SSD connected to the USB C port is flawless.I could not be happier with the product and the sales and product support from B&H Photo.I absolutely recommend B&H PHOTO for anyone looking for the product line they sell. They won this customer over for sure. Maybe I could even get a little cheaper at times, though not often, but I will opt for B&H Photo because of their sales and support. Thank you folks.
