Where to begin... First off, this unit was plug & play and worked fine on an Apple computer. Kudos Blackmagic. You continue to focus on Apple and not Windows. I saw some of the reviews before purchasing this and knew that USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 Ports are very different. However, I know I have a Thunderbolt 3 Port on my laptop. Before I purchased, I went on Lenovo's website to confirm. (I have a Legion Y740 series which does have Thunderbolt 3 for its specs). I also called Lenovo and confirmed this. I also bought the correct Thunderbolt 3 Cable (two different kinds to be safe).Unfortunately, even though I followed all the rules, I still could not get connectivity with this unit to work with my computer. I tried one of my Alienware laptops. No dice.Blackmagic ... MoreWhere to begin... First off, this unit was plug & play and worked fine on an Apple computer. Kudos Blackmagic. The throughout is there on your ATEM mini / pro / iso units, but you don't just use USB-C as the standard? Why Thunderbolt? Other products can do this over USB-C. Come on Blackmagic.@BH: Thank you for making the return process easy.

It should be Blackmagic's tagline - their products are well designed... on paper, they have everything you'd want for a reasonable price, but in reality, I've found that I'm forced to live with unexpected compromise. This flawed unit is no different. Video monitoring and loop through from my mac/M1/Adobe sys works great. But I also spent the 1k to get analog audio input from a mixer/microphone - that's where this unit fails. I spent time on the phone with Blackmagic support, there was some vague note that you also needed to loop video into the unit in order to get analog audio - but that didn't work for me (nor should it be an official workaround for analog audio in) - I exchanged the unit, wasting a trip into NYC/B&H to realize that no levels display on unit's ... The XLR input is for show. The analog 1/4" ins are for show. And this doesn't feel like a firmware fix - the unit is flawed.

Build quality is pretty good. Output is smooth even at 4K60 when using Blackmagic's own player. Output can be choppy when using other third party apps; not sure if that's an issue with the SDK or those other apps themselves.I wish there was a way to decrease or disable the buffer during playback. It seems to default to about 4 frames, which is actually a lot when used in a live performance event. The biggest disappointment is that the device can only be used for capture OR playback, but not both simultaneously. It's not a bandwidth issue; bidirectional streams at 1080p would be child's play for a Thunderbolt device of this generation. I was hoping to be able to capture 3G SDI into my media server and then output to screens with this device but discovered that it ... MoreBuild quality is pretty good. Pros:Build quality for this device feels good. I like the small screen to verify signal.Playback is smooth when using BM's own software, but can be choppy when using third party apps. Not sure if the problem is with BM's SDK or those other apps.Cons:I was disappointed to learn that it cannot do capture and output at the same time, not even at just 3G rates. I was hoping to use this device to capture camera program into my media server, blend it with content, and then output again. Or another scenario would be to use one of the audio inputs to capture timecode into the server and then playback content as usual through the device. But the device only supports input or output, not both at the same time. And it's not a bandwidth issue because Thunderbolt 3 can ... MorePros:Build quality for this device feels good. Blackmagic could easily fix this with a firmware update.
The Blackmagic Design UltraStudio 4K Mini (a mouthful, for sure) is by far the best small interface I've ever used to get video in and out of a computer. I also have an Avid DNxIO, which turns out to be overkill for my needs. This unit is 1/5 the size of the DNxIO (same hardware as the 3 rack unit Ultrastudio Extreme), and does, basically, the same job, and more. For instance, the Mini will record locally any signal coming into the unit on an SD card, which slides into the front of the device. Great for backing up a live stream-- and yes, it is a high quality interface for live streaming-- because it ingests footage at up to 4K. It also accepts and maintains a 4:4:4 color space. If you are green-screening, it's a must-have.Negatives? Not the last word in quiet ... If you are green-screening, it's a must-have.Negatives? Not the last word in quiet operation, there is some fan noise. I'm considering hacking the box and installing quiet fans. The menus could be a little easier to use and would benefit from rotary knobs that pressed as well as turned. No power cable included. If you have more obscure needs-- like timecode in and out, quad SDI cabling, a PCIe interface, you will want the larger and more expensive 4K Extreme 2. But for 99% of your needs this is the perfect box, and it's super small.
If you think you can record 4K on the Sd card you're mistaken. The Ultra studio is only an encoder (or pass through). The SD card feature only acts as a card reader and has issues with UHD 4K resolution. Even though I purchased the correct specs for the SD card it does not playback the 4K footage. Another downer is that the unit has to be connected to a computer in order for it to work. There is minimal control on the interface of the unit. It's all for looks unfortunately.
Overall, I'm a bit disappointed in the Blackmagic Design UltraStudio 4K Mini. While it captures audio and video fairly well, much of the design of the device is a bit strange. Until connected to the computer, the device won't even turn on, and will instead show a black screen making you think it's broken. The interface for the device is also very poor. Some menus are navigated by nobs, some buttons. I still haven't figured out what the 1 & 2 buttons even do. Finally, this device lacks certain other features, like the ability to cut between the two inputs from the display, that other, cheaper, Black Magic devices in this line up do have. Overall, the device works fine for video capture, but won't wow when it comes to design and features.
I was SO excited when i purchased this. I work heavily in production video, content creation, media preflight, pop-up multicam livestreaming, etc etc. I was so happy to have dropped a thousand dollars on a VIDEO INTERFACE. I mistakenly thought this had any kind of routing or I/O capability like a traditional AUDIO interface. It does not. You can't really even do simultaneous video in and out. You can't loop multiple cameras in to production software. You can't keep a webcam setup while you record footage.it's useless. It's a REALLY expensive all-in-one single-lane capture device. It still needs 2-3 other devices to create the most bare minimum of I/O environments for digital production. I guess it is useful if you do lots of media archiving, but again (Blackmagic) ... After reading many of the reviews, I find most problems are user errors. This is great for bringing in 12g cameras to vmix etc to stream. All of these type BM products that are 4k ONLY have the usbc fir updates NOT for connection. USB c is NOT near fast enough to transfer that data. That has to be done over thunderbolt. Yes the new thunderbolt is a usbc connection , but that is the only part that is the same. Thunderbolt and transfer date at 40gb and it works great with a laptop that has thunderbolt. Razer makes many with the 2080 card that does fine.Do your research on BM products before you buy so you get the right unit for the job. ALSO this is not sold as nor intended to be a switcher so it clearly is only ONE input so one camera.
You would think that with buttons on the front that say One and Two, you would be able to assign them to do something. Maybe, select between one input and another since it has several inputs on the back. The buttons have no function. There isn't even mention of them in the instructions. We've been using 50 dollar audio capture cards, and 200 dollar video capture cards, both integrated in Wirecast. Thought this would allow me to streamline my inputs into a neat option, and allow me to eliminate a small video input mixer. It looked like the solution we needed to have two inputs ready on hand with a simple push button. No. Only way to switch inputs is within the software or menus. Why does this have buttons on it that say one and two? Wasted my money on it.
