I was so excited to buy this item. built quality is beyond my expectations but I have an issue where I can never expose it in synch with the camera exposure. I have used it with Lumix S1H and Blackmagic pocket camera but I have to underexpose in camera to expose it correctly in the monitor. If I expose correctly in the camera the monitor is always overexposed. I have used the ninja v monitors before and never had the issue. I even tried with older Blackmagic cameras, same problem. so for me its was $800 that i could have used elsewhere.

SOLID quality. Nothing lacking in this Blackmagic Recording Monitor. A few reviews have brought up weight as a negative. The solid feel to this product conveys reliability and QUALITY to me. The recording - storage features are easy and natural to live with.The BRAW captures a full color spectrum from my S1H mated with ZEISS GLASS. The Zeiss image is swimming in beautiful colors that give you that Zeiss Look. The 12-bit color output is everything film art deserves.

Bought this to pair with my Nikon Z6 for BRAW recording to serve as a B-Cam to my BMPCC6K. It's a bit of a pricey B-Cam setup, but the initial sting wears off once you can save loads of time on a shoot. A-Cam always lives on sticks, the Z6 and BM Video Assist lives on the gimbal or a slider. Since I have the Crane 3S, the gimbal's motors can handle this rig with ease once balanced. No more constantly building up or breaking down solo-cam setups. Having the bright screen makes operating the gimbal a breeze since I no longer have to reference the small 2.5 screen you will find on all SLRs. The Video Assist is a must have for external BRAW recording. If you only have one camera, maybe consider spending a bit more for the 7 version with audio inputs so you can record a ... Also, with BRAW being such a light codec , I can run all day on a cheap $100 UHS-II V60 256GB Sony SD card, so the solo SD slot didn't bother me one bit.
I have used this monitor/recorder in the past with a Panasonic S1h and it worked fine. Recently, however, I connected the video assist to my Canon C300 MK III, and to my disappointment it does not work. The video assist reports 'no signal'. I've changed HDMI cables and have used Ultra High Speed cables all to no avail. Canon's list of compatible cameras lists the Canon C200 and the R5c, but conspicuously absent is the C300 MK III, and this despite the fact that their promo material claims that it will work with any HDMI camera.
I've only had this for a short amount of time, but so far it has worked extremely well. The picture quality is excellent. It's bright, clear and very sharp. I really like all the options that you have with it - different scopes, waveform, focus assist etc. They all seem to work well. A lot of user adjustments to make it work the way you need it to. All the information you want to see is easily seen or accessible - battery life, recording time left, audio meters, very clear when you are recording and when you aren't etc. The unit has some fan noise, but I didn't find it overly noisy. The XLR audio input has options for Mic and Line level inputs as well as a 15dB pad and phantom power. In doing tests with a tone generator and sending a line level input the unit input levels are correct. However when I put the tone generator on a mic level signal into the unit, the level is extremely low and really not usable. In further tests I concluded that the line level input on the unit is really only about 15db higher than the mic level. In fact, the mic level with the 15 db pad turned on was about the same level as switching the unit to line level input. In addition when you turn the unit to line level input the 15db pad appears on but is not user selectable. It seems they labeled a mic input as basically a line level input with a pad.I did contact BM support about the issue but the only response I received was they didn't have much information on my issue and they copy and pasted the audio portion from the user manual. So the unit does not appear to have an actual mic level input that you can hook an actual microphone straight into it for recording which was a little frustrating as that was a function I was wanting to use.Overall I'm happy with it, but wish it had an actual mic level input.
Moving from limited in-camera recording capability to nearly unlimited Apple ProRes422 capture time. Camera remains cool because its no longer having to compress live video and write it to memory cards. Pure balanced PA system XLR audio has also been so much cleaner than in-camera audio converters that more post-production gain adjustments are possible without introducing any noticeable noise. A couple of features that would have been helpful include (1) Dante or AVB digital audio input (2) network-based remote control app (3) a larger version with more video In/Out, and (4) a second high-speed USB-3.2 or USB-4 port for outboard high-capacity capture storage AND simultaneous connection to a video streaming computer, or secondary external video capture storage.

This Monitor is a really great MONITOR, if it didn't have to live in it's own enclosure. The screen is nice and the device itself works fine...My major complaint is within just a few months (of not ever using the SDI out) the SDI out is absolutely dead. I've tried multiple cables & power and nothing. This is a MASSIVE issue for me, as we're trying to use a SDI loop for our Hollyland Wireless (which doesn't have loop) now making it impossible.Basically, I either need to spend $1,000+ on a new monitor or $3,600+ on a Teradek system that has loop + wireless.I am trying to get it replaced...BUT BM has really had a bad track record in fixing their products (which is a real shame, because I do love so much)
To set context, I am running FW 3.4.1- you WILL have a green or magenta colour cast to the display which cannot be calibrated away. The display's only colour option is for Saturation. A workaround is to create a custom LUT that only reduces green or magenta and have it enabled full time. But because you need to create the LUT on your computer, there will be a lot of back 'n' forthing to get it just right. What a pain!- you cannot navigate to a previously-shot clip. There are no shuttle controls other than Play and Stop. The interface provides a timeline of all your footage so the best you can do is slide back 'n' forth trying to get to the head of a clip. It will remind you of the days of having footage on tape!- the idiotic - there is no kinder word for it - ... It will remind you of the days of having footage on tape!- the idiotic - there is no kinder word for it - placement of the extremely-fragile USB-C port on the bottom of the unit, near the center 1/4-20 mounting hole. Was BM thinking that no one would be mounting their recorder to anything? That 100% of their customers would be holding it in their hands??? Your options are severely limited as BM did not include at least one auxiliary hole to allow for an anti-twist connection. The monitor (even without two heavy batteries attached) is heavy enough to self-loosen if you are doing nothing more than threading the 1/4-20 end of your Magic arm onto it. Yes, there are three 1/4-20 holes in total on the underside so you can use two of them for a NATO rail and one for a cable protector. BUT if you get the Smallrig cage for this (not aware of any other), it uses the connection point of the cable protector! So it is then impossible to protect the USB-C. The cage is a necessity as it is impossible to protect the HDMI cable connection otherwise. The cage also provides auxiliary holes (and enough NATO rail) for an anti-twist connection. ADVICE: get yourself a right-angle USB-C adapter or cable and then attach a cable protector on the right hand side of the cage.- the unit will not remember your storage preference between power cycles. It will always use (and quickly fill) your SD card first so that is something to watch out for every time you power up. This is not trivial as the unit will not allow you to delete clips, only format the whole card.- it takes FOUR taps to activate False Colour (and other exposure guides). Other reviewers here have mentioned it and they weren't kidding. It is a major nuisance, especially when shooting handheld.- False Colour cannot be customised and there is no legend on edge of screen to indicate the range.- Latency. I found it to be a few frames off, but acceptable when connected to a Sony camera via HDMI. The Sigma fp was a good half-second off. So might be a good idea to test with other cameras before fully blaming BM for this issue.-sluggish Record button. It can be annoying to often have to tap more than once to start/stop recording. ADVICE: get a handgrip with LANC control. It works flawlessly this way.- even at 2500nits, full brightness, the screen is so reflective that it can be difficult to nail critical focus (depending on the position of the sun in the sky). The sun hood included with the cage I mentioned above helps, though. The high brightness actually gives you a false sense of security; you think you don't have to worry about the sun anymore because the image itself is so easy to see. To put in perspective, my PIX-E5 is only 500nits, but once I defeat the sun by flagging the screen (or using a hood), I can 100% tell if I am tack sharp. And why am I not using Focus Peaking, you ask? Because, once again, it takes four taps to activate it. Obviously, this point is only relevant for those shooting with lenses wide open. Stopped down, you'll be fine.- as BM continues to state the DC input is 12V only, you might be tempted to get an NP-dummy battery/cable to use with your V-mount battery. In my experience, my Switronix version of that works fine at 50% brightness, but any attempt to go higher than that will shut off your Video Assist. A NP battery alone can go up to 100% with no issue. Running 12V via a regulated cable into the the unit's DC port also works with no issue.- Histogram thumbnail that does nothing. It's a dead spot on the display. And trust me, if no one told you otherwise, you'll be tapping it expecting something to happen. If the thumbnail is not turned on via the third page of Setup, it will just be an empty black box facing you. BM should consider making that screen real estate a toggle for a Quick Look preference. False Colour on/off or Focus Peak on/off, etc. We can only hope.
